Very good video, brother. Thanks for explaining it in an understandable way. So many struggle with basic compass use and you did a great job breaking it down.

I really appreciate that James. It is a topic I put off for awhile because while it isn't super complicated, it can sure seem that way and become easily frustrating to a beginner. I have a few more parts in this series coming very soon. Thank you for taking the time to tune in and for your kind words sir.

Good job explaining this. This is not a difficult subject but one that can be confusing. You did a great job keeping it simple. For working with your students. You can get a topo map of the area and plot these points as grid coordinates. Then you can create different routes instead of simply having one single course forward and backward. In addition you will have to convert your pace counts back into meters so your students can use their own pace counts.

Thank you very much for your kind words Shawn. I agree that would be a great exercise to work on as well. We did some training this weekend with grid coordinates and topo maps. We were using 6 point grid coordinates to get students within 100 meters of their target resources. Navigation is definitely a topic I enjoy learning on. Take care sir.

Thank you so much brother! I am glad you are enjoying this. I know navigation tends to be an overlooked skill because many times we are operating on familiar terrain and just use visual references to get from point a to b. However, when we do journey into a new area, these basic skills can give you confidence that you know how to get back and also allow you to become familiar with the new area. I have a few more parts coming that will explain this further as well. Thanks again and take care brother!

Good stuff here Matt! I remember it as LAMS. “L”ess than 180, “Add” 180, “M”ore than 180, “S”ubtract 180…

Great info that will be very useful when out bow hunting. But i have a scenario you didnt cover. So I get out of my truck and record my azimuth & pace counts to where I end up setting up my Summit Goliath climber tree stand. Now i move to 3 or 4 different locations which i also record as before. So I have the azimuth & pace for lets say 5 locations; A-E. 'A', being my truck and "E" being my last stand location. How do i navigate from "E", directly back to "A", my truck? Thanks in advance!!!

Excellent question Micheal! I have a video to explain that exact scenario which is compass basics part 7 in this series. It will discuss dead reckoning and how to find a direct azimuth in the field from your last point back to your first point. Let me know what you think. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Black Hat Bushcraft that is awesome! Great video. I love the no fluff, no BS approach to your videos. In the dead reckoning video you show putting stakes in the ground to simulate your path. What if this was not an option and you needed to do this on paper? Would the methodology change in any way? Would it effect the accuracy? As in this example you said you were off by 3°. If you did it on paper would it be more precise or less?

Another excellent question Michael! You can absolutely do this on paper and I am actually working on the video for that which will become part 8, "Making the Map". The only different is instead of stakes on the ground, you use your compass, pencil and a straightedge to draw it out on your paper (preferably graph paper). It may end up being a bit more accurate just due to precision makings. The main difference between the ground method and paper is you have to make sure the paper is oriented north as you make the map. I hope to get a video completed on this method very soon. Thank you again for your kind words and interest!

Black Hat Bushcraft : I am looking forward to your next video in this series. I have to say this has been the best beginners land nav series I have watched on KZfaq. Will you also be covering intersection & resection? Do you have an ETA for the next land nav video? Thanks & keep up the good work.

Why wouldn’t you just write down the reverse azimuth when you take your bearing?
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
I do actually. At the school we teach students to make a range card with the azimuth, the reverse azimuth and the pace count for each point. It is good for people to understand how to figure their reverse azimuth in in multiple ways to really understand how it works. It seems simple but it does go over the beginner's heads sometimes. Thank you for tuning in and commenting!
