Compassion Pt. 3: Strategically pray for yourself.
The greatest barriers to successful ministry typically come from within. The unrefined, immature areas of our character have a wonderful way of derailing what God wants to do through us.
There is no trick to overcoming those barriers. We cannot wish them away or confess them away. However, the Holy Spirit can grow them away. He builds our character as we persevere through trials. He refines and reshapes us into hopeful, loving people (see Romans 5:3-5).
We must dare to move away from the constant pull to pray for our everyday needs and begin to go to deeper places of intercession for specific areas of our own character. God has a way of answering our cry for wholeness and bringing with Him all of the other things He already knows we need (see St. Matthew 6:31-33).
As we develop in character, we also develop in our ability to love, identify with, communicate and connect with other people. Compassion will be an outgrowth of that type of personal development.
Your call to music ministry is so much more than your talent. Just imagine how powerfully you will write and sound when your gifts are delivered to your audience from a truly compassionate heart.
