I recently picked up a competition set of Ivankos (after numerous issues with Rogue again). I like them a lot so far, but it's definitely going to take some adjusting on the math end of it.

It's actually easier math with KG. Bars weight 20kg (all of this is mostly standard) and you can add on 25kg plates instead of 45 pound plates. For 25kg it goes like this (this is one side): 1 plate = 70kg. 2 plates = 120kg. 3 plates = 170kg. 4 plates = 220 kg. 5 plates = 270 kg. See the pattern?

Now you now how we from other countries feel. We always have the trouble converting lbs to kg when we watch fitness channels whitch mostly are from the USA :)... Those who use kg plates usually will say the actual weight, and not the number of plates. And usually, whole numbers are check points like 50kg, 100kg, 150kg etc. For me it was at the beggining unusual why its 315 and not 300 or why its 405 and not 400 etc, like you have and count only 45lbs plates.

Hello I was thinking about getting some calibrated plates I was wondering if you would recommend the bumper plates or the powerlifting plates as of know I can only deadlift 440 pounds but my steel plates are very inaccurate.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 7 жыл бұрын
They're a pricey investment, so I would really think it over if it's worth it. It also depends on how you train. If you do olympic training than bumpers would be better, but for powerlifting, steel plates are more ideal IMO. If you go the steel route, I'd highly suggest the Rogue set as it's much more affordable than Ivanko, Titex, or Elieko.
@danielmondor5609
@danielmondor5609 7 жыл бұрын
+Brandon Campbell thanks for the reply. I mainly do powerlifting and for the little bit of Olympic lifts I do I have a set of York black bumper plates. The reason I'm thinking about making the investment is the steel plates I have are very inaccurate and yes it is a lot of money but weights hold there value well so I could always sell them down the road if I regret it. What would you say are the pros of the steel ones over the rubber ones?

What people might not realize is that with less "real estate" taking up the bar, you will also get less whip of the bar. This makes it more difficult off the floor with deadlifts. Yes, even a stiff bar like the westside, or the Ohio bar still has a little bit of whip.

In this video, it looks like when you rise from the squatted position to the fully extended position, half way through that movement your upper torso tilts forward. Is this good form? Is this cheating you of the optimal workout of all targeted muscles intended for this exercise, or worse, are you setting yourself up for injury? I'm not an expert on proper form, it's just interesting and I'd like to know. I would be interested in seeing you do a video where you demonstrate the proper movement with just a bar with no weights, and then demonstrate the movement again with progressively more weight, just to see if there's a difference in form.

Hi Brandon. I have been following your KZfaq channel some time. I really like your content. I would like to hear your opiniion on something, if you dont mind. I am in the process of building my home gym. My priorities are: 1. not to bother my family or neighbours too much. 2. Space is limited. 3. Cost - Not critical, but I also like to spens money on other things. So I settled on classic powerlifting, as OLY would clash with my first two priorities. So here is my question: How much noise/shakes does Rogue competition plates produce compared to bumper plates? I know bumpers will be quieter overall, but am wondering if bumpers are really necessary? I have a plywood and rubber matt deadlift platform. Again. my concern is that the home gym is located in the room next to our living room. Thanks

TBH I don't think you'll find they make that much noise difference in the long run as long as they're secured (same with regular cast iron plates). It really comes down to how you're dropping them and how much weight you're using. If you look at some of my older deadlift videos with the bumpers, the heavier sets are still loud.

What are the Ivankos and Rogue made from? Guessing cast iron for the ivanko and rubber for the Rogues? Couldn't afford Eleiko plates right? Triple the price. They're super expensive in Australia.

it's easier if you only count the plates on one side of the bar first, let's say you have 6 red plates that's 150kg multiplied by 2 that's 300kg first then you add the bar 20kg a total of 320kg. Keep on working Brandon

Brandon, are Ivanko weights worth the price? If so, can you help me understand why? I like quality products but also like to understand why something is worth the asking price. Unless other weights have some glaring disadvantage or shortfall compared to Ivanko, I'd like to understand why Ivanko costs so much. Thanks. Good video!

I think now, the best calibrated plates would be from Rogue (they were unreleased at the time of my purchase). That being said, most home gyms are better off with regular steel plates IMO. They serve the same purpose and will save you a ton of money. Competition plates are just a lot more accurate and better represent a competition environment, which is why I went with them.
@RedondoBeach2
@RedondoBeach2 7 жыл бұрын
I'll research the Rogue plates. The reason I got interested in Ivanko equipment is based on what I've read about its high quality. The Ivanko site even talks about the quality of their bars compared to cheaper ones. They gave an example where an inferior bar from a competing manufacturer resulted in a powerlifter's death when the bar snapped and cut his throat. As a follow-up question to you; is there a particular brand name, in your opinion, that makes the best dumbbells? Also, what's your opinion on rubber coated dumbbells vs urethane coated dumbbells and hexagon vs circular weights on the dumbbells? I appreciate your comments.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 7 жыл бұрын
RedondoBeach2 quality matters to me, but not all. Many other providers equipment will suffice, but differences in quality can be seen. I haven't looked too into dumbbells so I don't have much input here.

Bumper plates--DL, OLY WL. Steel plates--squats, bench pressing...not to be dropped. If some one is buying quality plates for the first time...coming from owning Amazon.com brands...cast iron...I'd go with Rogue bumper plates. the black ones. So that you CAN drop them when you start lifting"heavy enough". Eventually most of us do. (non-competitors).

Just wanted to point out that it's easier to think in terms of bar and collars as one whole unit, in other words, 20+2.5+2.5 = 25kg, which is the same as one red plate (assuming 20-kg-bar of course).
