Not a particularly informative video as I had camera issues, but a little something for the P38 guys Mike PS the pump is ruining fine!

For my 98 I installed an Airtex E3270 purchased on Amazon. You don't need to replace the whole frame unless the level sender is bad. For my 2000 I bought a pump and necessary fittings from Quantum Fuel Systems.

The beauty of the D2 - access port for the fuel pump. I spent a day under my Defender in Namibia in a borrowed shop dropping my tank - 70L of diesel to deal with, too. These pumps don't always die a sudden death. They can just slowly lose power

While watching this video I had a flash back from the past ( 50years ). It was when we had a slow puncture, or back when all tyres had inner-tubes and if they had perished and gone poruss. We let all the air out of the tyre by taking the valve core out, then with the help of a tube we would take a mouthful of milk and blow it into the tyre a few times. It worked great as long as you run the wheel for a while to make the milk circulate round the tyre, after a while the milk would go cheesy, and when it leaked out into the fresh air went a bit hard and sealed the leaks, we never had a failure with doing this. You can imagine what an easy option that was compared with stripping down a 10.00 X 20 ins wheel and tyre that had a split rim, and all by hand. I thought that might make you and some of your apprentices laugh Mike. As we say in Yorkshire. --- no bugger's learned up. Best wishes from Yorkshire Rob.

Plenty to fix on a P38! Nice looking though and no rust.

With owners permission, we sometimes make an access panel in the load area floor.

I still think that the P38 is the best looking Range Rover they made

I agree entirely! Retained most of the classic looks and has excellent lines - just a pity about the electrics Mike

I wonder where the name P38 came from ??? I worked on the develpoment of this car at Lode Lane from the very first prototypes right up to the time they stopped buiding them and the car was known as a 38A. The origin of that name was from the name of the building that the development team worked in.... Block 38A. In all that time I never heard them called P38. I think the miss-naming came about through the Land Rover magazines and spread from there. Some earlier Rover cars were called P4, P5, and P6..... P meant prototye.
@gordonwedman31793 жыл бұрын
@@thomasmccauley3753 No one calls them P38A because there never was a B.

@@gordonwedman3179 In all my 40 years working for Land Rover I only ever heard these cars called 38A. Nobody there called them P38......or P38A or P38B ,C, D, E, F or anything else. I worked closely on Security with them at prototype stage, and at Project Management stage when they went into production. Would anyone reading this who worked at Land Rover care to either back me up on this or tell me I am mistaken ???

On These jobs mike I use a 500 volt insulation tester on the wiring....or Megger...for a trade name. The higher voltage will find ifffy cable insulation

I thought the OEM pumps were VDO, like on the D2 diesels. Speaking of that, I reckon if I had a P38 I'd cut a hole in the floor and get a cover plate from a D2 and screw it on there. Having to drop the tank to change something as fickle as a Land Rover fuel pump is nuts. Especially if someone before has fitted a cheap one.
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
The tank on the P38 is on the right hand side almost under the mid row seat - I did see a YT video of someone do it and it looked a mess as the floor is not flat but stamped with ribs etc - my customer saw it and didn't want me to do that If the fuel was out then getting the tank out is not too bad

I did a similat thing with on a Ford Focus. Worked our where the petrol pump was located and cut a circulay hole above it with an angle grinder. Luckily I did not let the blade go too deep as it turned out there was only about 1/4" clearance at one point. I was able to fit a new pump and then made a cover for the hole from a piece of sheet steel. Fastened it dow with self tapper screws and silicon sealer. Easy future access... no need to drop the tank.

I’m in the same situation at the moment Mike, the old mans discovery 4 has had a problem with the sender unit in the tank, it’s been on and off for months but about 3 months ago it stopped working...anyway he kept on using it and the other day it cut out on the motorway! Apparently it’s been left for so long it’s telling the car it’s out of fuel and makes the engine misfire and cut out, bloody dangerous as as soon as it cuts out the steering is super heavy.. I managed to drive it home and it’s the pump/sender and because he’s not had a working gauge it’s been kept full... No drain plug so after braking and cornering hard the gauge appeared so I’ve been driving it and now have it down on the red..bloody stupid not having a drain plug but that’s the modern Land Rover for you..

What a carry on I had getting the tank out - fuel was swishing all over the place and trying to get the breather pipes off at the same time as you are trying to hold it steady I guess they do not put drains on the plastic tanks as they are difficult to seal or easy to strip Bad thinking on Defenders for example when you are filling from Jerry cans and run the risk of getting water in the tank I suppose that is why on the Td5 they put water sensors on the fuel filter Still, at least the plastic tanks don't rust! Mike

Britannica Restorations Ltd yes I’m not looking forward to doing it Mike, I’ve not got the luxury of a ramp or lift! I managed to get 16 years and a 150000 miles out of our td5 disco pump but had one on stand by knowing it’s going to fail at anytime... when it did I open the boot and cut the carpet and remove cover, pump changed in 30 mins! So simple.... Yes the water sensor on the td5, can’t be many still running around with it plugged in! My dad bought a brand new 2000 TD5 from MJ Fews Land Rovers and we had only been driving it home for 4 or 5 miles and the light came on the dash, frighten my Dad and he blamed it on me as he let me drive it home! After it happened the second time I disconnected it and that’s how it stayed until we sold it...

Some good information. I'll play around with the fuses of my P38 and see if that fixes my heated seats! Question. what is your opinion on the lack of available accesories for P38 vehicles? I've being looking for an off-road bar for mine, but I haven't being able to find a specific one for the P38. Can I fit an off road bar designed to fit a Discovery II onto my 96 P38????
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
The P38 was not a popular vehicle for accessories - just like the Discovery 2 I do not think D2 parts will fit a P38
