They caught lightning in a bottle: the "celebrities" you never heard of, the jokes, antics, all at 3:30 p.m. after school or during the summer when everyone just had to tune in. A show like this would be impossible today. Probably the best daytime show of all time.

I had a friend in college who's dad was a cameraman on the show and he said that they would shoots all these show back to back in a day and there was a lot of drinking onset so they would be hammered by the end of day, hence all the flubs.

My understanding was that a weeks worth of five shows were shot in one day. However, I believe they said that three were filmed before the "dinner break" and two after. Therefore those that were shot later in the day were after more alcohol was consumed and people were more intoxicated.

A bug thanks to Gene, Brett ,Charles ,Richard, Betty , Fannie., Elaine, Bobby and all the other great stars who graced the show. RIP to all those who are no longer living and a BIG THANKS

Best game show - even today! I watch the reruns everyday. They had their nitche like no other! They had far more freedom to be themselves back then.

I used to watch this after school. It put a huge smile on my face. I think Betty White is the only person from that show, both cast, and contestants, that's still alive. She will outlive everyone.

Elaine Joyce is still alive, so is Jo Ann Pflug, Fannie Flagg and Joyce Bulifant as of New Year's 2021. A few other guests from the 1973-82 version are still around.

@@dirtyoldman7356 True. It just seems like we've lost so many, lately. It's odd how we forget that celebrities age, just like everyone else. I believe Alan Hale was on the show, as was Bob, was Dawn ever on? IMDbing it now.

@@dirtyoldman7356 Nope, Alan wasn't, but he was on Family Feud and The New Hollywood Squares. Bob was on Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour. Jim Backus was. Dawn wasn't, nor was Natalie, Tina, or Russell.

We knew this in the uk and ireland as blankety blank. It was based on this show and ran from 1979 to 1985 then came back in the 90's. It started again now.

Gene Rayburn was an absolute pirate, and Brett, Charles, Richard, Betty, and the rest were his dread pirate crew. Even 50ish years later, this show is an absolute riot and I can only imagine how much fun it must have been to be a contestant, cast member, or crew member.
