1. The ALTs are changed too often 0:57 2.The ALT speaks too fast and uses too much slang 2:08 3. The ALT doesn't make time for meetings and goes home early 4:20 4. The ALT always makes jokes and doesn't take the lesson seriously 6:09 5. The ALT complains too much 8:36 6. The ALT doesn't have enough experience and content background to become a teacher 10:12 7. The presence of the ALT ideals depowers Japanese English within the teacher's perspective 12:01 8. Experienced teachers have a hard time adapting to Japanese schools 13:35

Super agree ako doon sa Filipinos speak more clearly. One of my JTEs keep on saying that to me! 😂 Kaya it’s important na we maintain a neutral accent when we speak. Pero minsan lumalabas at lumalabas talaga Pinoy accent ko. Hahaha but I think it’s still easy for them to understand what we say even with our accent. Nice vlog, senpai! Hoping I won’t receive those complaints. 😂

Almost all these conplaints have an opposite. My JTE complained to me that i make his life difficult because i teach in one of his classes while he teaches with a direct hire in the other, and i have too many activities and the like (which i give him the materials for to use as he pleases) which makes it hard for him becaude then he has to plan the other class to keep up, and he lamented that thr JETs in his school before, where he was the JET tantou sensei, would just stay in the teachers room and play on their computers and instead interact with the kids after scool and he thought that was better :-) My sin? I taught the students hoe to read and pronounce sounds in english using IPA, and hoe to read with rhythm and intonation to enhance their learning experience. But according to him, i interfere too much. I make them shadow and teach aloud together insteadof making them repeat after me. I make them write and present their own ideas in groups instead of memorizing the definitions of individual vocabulary. Etc etc. Meanwhile, in the same grade year, my other JTEs fully expect me to have a skill building activity planned for at least 50% of the classes. What ive found is that male teachers specifically seem to have a problem with me, as though they feel emasculated.

True enough! I've also heard of JTEs as yours. And I've heard from a friend even worse, like sleeping (as in snoring) at the back while the poor ALT is handling the class. Good riddance, I haven't had any of those (yet).

I think alot of the issues here is that jet makes it more of a cultural exchange vs a job, which I think is also why jet is ok with the low pay compared to the countries they get the most applications from (us, uk, ect). Yeah, they may want english first applicants but the whole year with out good enough pay leads to this. And honestly, japan is not advance enough in english to have issues in hiring from places like your country, ect. Infact, because you had to learn english formally as a 2nd langauge, you might end up with better english (hence the no slang part)

As JET Program stands for Japan Exchange and Teaching Program, cultural exchange is as big part as English teaching. That's why JET ALTs are sometimes asked to do lessons about cultures of other countries. As for the ALT pay, I have no idea how much assistant language teachers get in other countries. But in Japan, JET pays the most compared to private dispatch companies. I also have to agree with you that Japan isn't one of those countries on the top of the English performing countries list maybe because of some program or curriculum implementation issues or maybe English language teaching styles. Idk tbh.

I think Filipino teachers of english have unique weaknesses and strengths compared to their native counterparts. Whilst pronunciation and advanced vocab knowledge may not match a native speaker I feel that having learnt the language makes them better teachers of grammar, native speakers tend to understand grammar more intuitively rather than in a structural way which isn't as good for teaching. I find it weird that some schools discriminate (maybe in the case of a school focusing on pronunciation I'd understand) but generally I feel like filipinos make great english teachers.
@Joey-Sensei
@Joey-Sensei 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your nice words, @Patrick! Sad but true that there still really are a number of schools here that discriminate teacher from the "non-standard" countries. Though there are still a few that give equal opportunities to NNES teachers, paychecks speak differently.
@subbuteo-trailblazers
@subbuteo-trailblazers Жыл бұрын
I have to disagree,maybe ok at elementary schools however a native speaker has a mastery and knowledge of their own language that filipinos simply don’t have unless they have a masters in English. This has been proven time and time again. ..Filipinos speak in broken English and this simply isn’t meeting the standard. You’ll be saying that Filipinos speak Nihongo more clearly than native Japanese next too no doubt?
@patrickarrow591
@patrickarrow591 Жыл бұрын
@@subbuteo-trailblazers A better way to explain what I mean is that people who learnt english as a second language tend to have a more mechanical understanding of grammar etc compared to alot of native speakers (myself included) who know it intuitively. I can point out how to say something correctly or if something sounds wrong or off grammatically but I don't have the same level of mechanical understanding to explain why as well.
@subbuteo-trailblazers
@subbuteo-trailblazers Жыл бұрын
@@patrickarrow591 maybe however the problem in Japan is that they are in fact only focussing on the mechanics of grammar, the BOE recognized thar learning too much grammar mechanically inhibits fluency, Japanese schools and Japanese lag in fluency because of this approach. The balance point now is to help them learn intuitively, this is why eikaiwa are gaining do many JHS learners…
@patrickarrow591
@patrickarrow591 Жыл бұрын
@@subbuteo-trailblazers I dont disagree, but I just think its good to recognise that people from countries in europe or places like the phillipines were they have some insight and understanding of the language that doesnt come easy to native speakers

Judging by the english levels in japan the entire country needs to switch to a program/curriculum that is taught by NATIVE SPEAKERS primarily. Not ALTs along with a japanese teacher. The way they teach english in japan is not conducive to learning a language

NATIVE SPEAKERS who are qualified to teach English as a second or foreign language primarily. That makes a huge difference.

I love the video Joey Sensei! Out of curiosity, as a fellow licensed educator, is there a way to get a Japanese teaching license and become a JTE?
@Joey-Sensei
@Joey-Sensei Жыл бұрын
I'm not very familiar with that. Pero based on my readings when I was looking for another job, there is a possibility for foreigners to get a teaching license. There are certain qualifications or requirements, which include teaching degree or certificates from duly recognized unis by Japan, teaching experience in a Japanese school for a certain period, high Japanese language proficiency as there is a qualification exam in Japanese, among others.

How many years can an alt teach or have their job Is this a permanent job or on e the contract is over the alt is jobless
@Joey-Sensei
@Joey-Sensei Жыл бұрын
How long can an alt have their job? It depends on the dispatch company. Usually, ALTs are given one year initial contract as in JET. Max is 5years. For private dispatch companies such as Interac, I think the contract is also annual, but there is no max number of years an ALT is allowed to work with them.

Hello po kuya Joey. JET Programme applicant ako and I recently sent my application via LBC courier. According to the tracker, it was received by someone. I looked for information regarding the person on his/her connection to the JET Programme. Can you somehow enlighten me regarding this because I'm really concerned about my application since the deadline is tomorrow. Thank you!

Making too much jokes is such a dumb complaint, class is boring for us most of all because the JTEs refuse to use any English in the classroom or respect our opinions to make the lessons more fun. Why pay attention if we don't know what you're saying?

Thank you so much in advance. These are: 1. Hnd po ba required mag submit ng COE from your past work? I Hope so po dahil isang COE lng po ang meron ako at mahirap itong hingiin sa previous employer ko. If I'll submit it, I'm afraid na hnd na po ito maibalik pa. 2. Hnd po ba required na sealed mong ipapasa ang Letters of Reference? 3. Sino po ang mag aarrange kung saang apartment ka tutuloy kapag na-deploy na po kau sa knya knyang prefecture?

1. No cert of employment required. 2. Letters of reference may be sealed if your referees gave you three copies of the letters. 3. Your contracting organization sets up (or helps you do so) your apartment.
