Part that is missing in this video: If you DO have an amp with a dedicated PHONO input, you do not need a separate preamp and you connect your turntable directly to the amp on the PHONO input. If your turntable has this PHONO/LINE switch and your amp does not have a PHONO input, set the switch to LINE and connect the turntable to a LINE/AUX input.

I have the "Problem" that my volume is to high. If i have it at about 1/4 of the possible Volume it already is way to loud (And i usually listen music loud, so it is way to loud for me and for the Speakers) ive got an amp with a built-in Preamp and a Rega Planar 3 turntable. Im not sure if the Turntable has also got a built-in preamp becouse i couldnt find that phono/line switch but i was thinking that (Because it is so loud) it could be Pre-amplified twice.

@@juri2894 if you conect it to the phono line of your amplifier and the sound came out loud no need for pre-amplifier ,sometimes the pre-amplifier takes the quality of your stylus that you paid in return of a louder sound wich is not a good exchange,normally all amplifiers with phono line and good turntables that are good in construction no need for pre-amplifier they are ready to be working and normally no turntable with pre-amplifier have a switch just those brands for kids ,yours is good i have a friend that bought one it´s old was having to much problems but to give you an idea i own a pioneer from 74 later i bought a technics SL-3310 later with a quartz engine they renamed it to SL-5000 this are turntables with more than 40 years of use and for decades they were working everyday we are in 2020 and no diference from the day i bought them i have the original cartridge and stylus and their stylus are from their brands not new ones from stylus manufacturers and they would be very expensive if i wanted the same quality in a new one let´s say as an example Ortofon (the right sound in Italian, and a very old brand that i used through out the 90´s as a dj because they had at the time an excelent professional series of stylus) i would have to spend almost 500€ to have the same quality from my high-end stylus from technics in second alf of the 70´s, i have also problems with my new neigboors but i let them scream and call the police and the policeman that was at my door he phoned me, we studied together in highschool and he was far crazier than me i was using a system from 76 that was from my dead and burried father two mono amplifiers a pre-amplifier two huge speakers like you could by a second hand bmw at the time with the money and i use the volume a litle up from 1/4 with loudness on ,treble at 3/4´s and bass at 2/4 also a 12 frequencies dual equalizer with the spectrum as the shape of two boobs on a beach layin´down seen from above and i remenber to listen to a paradise lost lp" icon "and the first of rage against the machine i went to the door and shake hands with the cop ,an old friend and ask him it´s not suposed to be silent time after 11p.m. he replyed yes ,the new neighboor a girl in hers 30´s start to scream like a chiken and in front of the police i screamed to her "if you wanted silence you shouldn´t had while i was in vacations stole 3/4 of my house wall when repairing yours ! "enough with the police listening she went to her house and closed the door , later at 12 p.m. a friend of mine pass through my house and we went to a friends concert hall and he lives down the street 50 meters and he asked me" what happened with your new neighboor?" ,i replyed that she thought the sound was too loud ,than he said to me i went for a smoke on the balcony and didn´t had to conect my stereo the music coming from your house was loud and clear"i said to him if we can hear music till 11 p.m. by law it was still alf past nine, it´s a war ,some like music other prefer those t.v shows that a series as episodes for 2 years and the story is about a guy who married and from nowhere his long dead girlfriend appears after 10 years and says ,my sister died not me than the guy becomes lover of his long lost girlfriend but his wife talks to drug dealers and paid to kill the new husband lover,than the dealer reconises her and can´t killer because she gave his mother a kidney so she could live than he says to his wife that he can´t make it because of the kidney and the wife kills herself the old girlfriend of his husband then she goes to jail but while crying an older girlfriend shows up and they live happy and with 4 kids to the eternity, and normally they spent money on a game together and they get the prize of hundreds of thousands of dollars all happy with kids and 2 dogs that had puppies and everybody cries of hapiness but not while i listen to rage against the machine first lp,and normally i start with "know your enemy" ,regards

Dude, I am addicted to your channel. I'm a 20year old kid from Romania and this January I visited L.A. and ran across this shop that I've never heard of called Amoeba 😂 I think you know where this is going. I ended up spending about $200 on records there, despite me not even owning a record player. Just being in Amoeba made me want to listen to vinyl and I totally love it. Of course, after returning to my Country, I got the Audio Technica LP60X and started falling in love with this whole thing of listening to music on vinyl. Since then I am watching your videos basically everyday, and I think you're awesome. Thank you for uploading such great and enjoyable content. Now I want to get my mom a record player also, so she could listen to her old vinyl collection gathering dust on a shelf. Anyway, you're awesome! Keep up the good work.

Hello, I just wanted to add a little thing. For the better conductivity of the GND (if your amp don't have a dedicated connector [3:32]) the srew method should be good, but I highly recommend to remove the paint with a piece of sendpaper and change the screws to unpainted ones. This is actually improves a lot to decrease the noise. Thanks for reading it.

For those with vintage equipment, don't be confused. Current turntables require putting a "phono amp" in them, or as a peripheral, as the ancient art of a phono step up on your old school receiver, or "pre-amp" (that input the phono AND tuner, tape/aux, aux2, & later CD etc.) & connected to the power amp, seems to be gone. When CDs came out & vinyl disappeared (sort of) in the 1990s - receivers & the old school preamps went "Phono"-less - as far as inputs. Preamps and receivers became all "LINE" level. Cartridge is low level (stylus exciting tiny tiny spirals) so requires a step up. Turntables never used to come with their own step up device (called a "preamp" in this video) in the analog era, as the old school preamp or receiver had the phono step up input for that built in already. Note one exception to above: Even back then, if you had a high end moving coil cartridge, which was even lower input level than the moving magnet type we normally used, you would need a "PRE-preamp", as they were called - ie additional step up device BEFORE the phono input of the receiver/preamp.

Excellent video! You explained, very clearly what and what NOT to do, regarding Turntable (phonograph) to receiver connection, phono/line switch, grounding, "pre-amp", no "pre-amp", speaker wire gage, incompatible gear, etc.... scenario. Bravo! What exactly happened to me, with the purchase of first turntable, receiver, since the 70s! Great job. I didn't understand some basics. You cleared up confusion. For an "audiophile", you might be redundant. For a total novice, you video was awesome.

Hi Jarrett, yesterday I finally hooked up my Jam Sound All In One turntable using the RCA plugs to my Logic 2.1 Speakers. I didn't need a preamp because the speakers are Active and have a built in amplifier. Let me tell you that the sound was phenomenal compared to the built in speakers on the record player. I usually use these speakers for my Xbox One X and I'm never going back to using the built in speakers ever again! My music sounds much better now and certain frequencies used to sound distorted on the built in speakers. Luckily it's not a Crosley lol. My record player was a Christmas Present from my Sister in 2017 along with a reissued Michael Jackson's Thriller Vinyl album. This was purchased from hmv uk and I love it. Thankyou for your excellent advice and awesome informative videos.

Btw, actually the ‘preamp’ you mention is actually known as a ‘phono stage’, and the amplifier has 3 different parts, the preamplifier, the power amplifier and the power supply. It is important to know this for higher end setups as then you may have a turntable, separate phono stage, preamp, preamp power supply and 2 mono block power amplifiers. Also, active speakers may have a full integrated amplifier (pre and power) or it may have just a power amp inside, so not all have volume controls.

When connecting the speakers, the cable lengths should be identical, regardless of the distance from the amplifier. i.e. if one speaker is 2 metres from the amp and the other speaker is 4 metres away, both cable lengths should be 4 metres.

@@KZfaqAIbot They get out of phase. Meaning there is a tiny amount of delay between the speaker. You really shouldnt worry about that except if you have a good ass setup. You probably wont even hear the difference
@cjmillsnun
@cjmillsnun 2 жыл бұрын
@@antoinepilote5900 To be fair the difference is going to be fractions of a microsecond. Electricity (and the signals from the amp to the speakers are electrical) travels at the speed of light anyway.
@iix23
@iix23 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, if you have a mile long speakers wires. Speed in copper should be in the vicinity of 0.8-0.9x the speed of light. A 15 foot cable would add less than 20ns delay. For most audio cables the signal propagation speed is around 200 million m/s. That gives a delay of roughly 5 ns per metre of cable. For typical cable lengths, we're still talking about tens of nanoseconds of delay. Stop with the cable sales speech.

@hbarnz

That’s what I thought too at first and the only record player that only requires buying the turntable is a Crosley but don’t buy those because they will ruin your records!!! If you are just starting out with records like I am, I would recommend the Audio Technica Lp60 and then you just have to buy some active speakers and you should be set! I hope this helps!

if you get a turntable with a pre-amp built in, you can line-out to anything with speakers, maybe even directly to headphones, but that sounding very good might be more expensive and less flexible.

hey man... to be honest, I'm feeling a bit stupid, but I might just be overwhelemd by the amount of information, but I wanted to ask. I have Audio Technica turn table. the LP120 with build in preamp, but I kave the passive Klipsch R51M speakers. What I don't uderstand is what I need to play on them. The cables kinda confuse me. Do I need only the reciever in order for everything to work? Thanks and sorry for bothering. I just saw that you have a very similar setup, so you might be able to give me some advice.

@@_Kolcki It looks like your turntable can do phono, auxiliary, and USB. These look to be incompatible with your Klipsch speakers which require speaker wires. Yes, you'll need a receiver if you want to use the current setup. You can use different speakers that are either USB or line-in auxiliary. Let me know if you need more help. I'm not an expert, just did a quick search.
