You really have to respect these guys, l have commented a few things here and there, that might seem a bit critical of them, but then l think, hmm, maybe l try to be a little too "precise". When you see them getting the job done under those conditions. Driving those valve seats in, facing them and the valves, lapping them in, etc. Hey, I'll bet that those engines run fine, and a long time, if maintained,, and driven respectfully. Thanks for the video guys, think I'm a bit more humble from watching. 🌈

Be sure that the timing chain is good. Many head gaskets were changed due to the chain being loose and wearing a hole in the front cover. Don’t ask how I know

22re is easy to work on. Me and a buddy changed pistons and rings in just over an hour with the engine still in the car lol!

I remember learning about torque sequences and progressing up to full torque and all that then going to a place with real certified mechanics and watching them put heads on with air impact wrench going across from one side to the other. Makes you wonder if anyone other than yourself tries to do it right.

Sure proper tourqe is ideal, but all the ugga duggas has worked just fine for countless mechanics. Given the slave labor rate and zero warranty , these engines return like bees to a nest due to premature failures from lack of proper torque , poor machining practices , improperly serviced and overloading..But hey when it cost you less then a gallon of goats milk to rebuild them its cost effective to have to keep rebuilding them every 6 months or 2000hrs.

Don't even mention me those Walmart"technicians" They can't even do a simple tire replacement. I made the mistake of getting a tire from them and it took them 2hrs and managed to break my interior door handle which they (and their manager) had enough audacity and claim it was like that when I dropped off the car. I even explain that If it was like that how tha hell did I open the door from the inside when I parked ( there is video evidence from their security cameras. But they basically told me that no matter what they weren't going to pay.

We have parts changers, very few mechanics. 9/10 couldn't diagnose needing a oil change.

@@bingosunnoon9341 1. Rod and main bearing caps should be marked so that they go back in the same position facing the same way. Pistons if being reused and Rods also. This is CRITICAL. 2. Never use a hard face hammer on engine internals (or ANY hardened steel surface). Use a brass or other soft face hammer. 3. When using new rings and new cylinder sleeves you must still measure ring gaps before reassembly. Fail. New cylinder sleeves need a light hone to seat rings. Ring gap must be measured after the hone. 4. The piston skirts should be oiled for assembly into the engine also. Place a short piece of rubber hose over connecting rod studs before inserting piston/rod assemblies into cylinders to avoid gouging cylinder walls and crankshaft machined surfaces. 5. Head should be installed on block and torqued BEFORE bolting exhaust or intake manifolds to the head! This is basic. They may make great hand holds but you risk warping the head when you torque it down, (I guarantee you the old exhaust manifold is NOT flat and strait). Don't do that. 6. use ONLY silicon grease or motor oil on engine rubber O-ring type gaskets, NO SILICONE SEALANT.

it really is. Back in 2007 we had a mobility kill on a Abrams tank. We took everything sensitive out but had to abandon it for roughly 9 hours if I remember correctly until we could get recovery vehicles out there. The Iraqis stripped that puppy clean in the dark with very basic tools. I still have no idea how they did it. Must have been like ants swarming over food just yanking parts. I'm not even sure why they wanted them. I was waiting to see a cab go past running on bogie wheels🤣

NO. "Experience", in this case being decades of history, dictates you use a torque wrench. "Experience", specifically "bad experiences" was the driver for the invention of the torque wrench. These guys are cavemen. It is possible to do what they are attempting, but they are only one step above Fred Flintstone. They demonstrate almost no esoteric knowledge. Critical mistakes makes the whole effort a waste. The sleeves you think will make the engine immortal were not honed. Rings don't seat. Fail.

I know I can apply pretty equal amount of torque with just my hand and wrench with educated guessing of proper amount for specific bolt, but , If I'm putting an engine together I'm sure to dig out a real torque wrench. Duh !

They're a ways away from the kind of sophisticated casting it takes to make major engine components. Plus that you have to actually engineer.

Agreed!!! Too many bad players where I'm from who critique and cut down others to boost their own positions in companies in order to enhance their job security. Too many bosses who are like that and also are too uneducated and stupid to see personnel problems as they are developing. Thus we see the workplace violence and the shootings taking place. Personally, the moment I see or sense a problem with ANY individual at a place of work, I put in my two weeks notice IMMEDIATELY!!!

I'm from Pakistan and usually have encounters with these mechanics from time to time. They're quite good at what they do. Secondly the workshops are quite disciplined. The elder person is called "ustad g" meaning master. They have very high level of respect for the masters. The young ones are there to learn observe and help the master in the tasks. As you can see these guys have no formal education or diplomas etc of the work they do. Every thing they learn and do is hands-on experience. This trade is basically ran by the principles of apprenticeship. The young guys come, they learn. Then, they set shops for themselves and train other guys and so the trade goes on.

Actually these are old diesels, not too complicated. They are built to last in Asian conditions.

that was neat. I found the valve spring keeper tool rather clever.

@@okgroomer1966 I was surprised that worked. I guess there's not too much tension on those valve springs? When I put double over springs in my car I had to weld a gusset brace into my C clamp valve spring compressor. Because the frame of the compressor was bending. I have a fairly decent valve spring compressor tool too. It's KD.

Mike most will say this unless they are the ones driving them and dealing with the constant failures/breakdowns and endless 6month overhauls...There is a reason they have gotten so quick in so called rebuilding these same engines ! They have been rebuilding the very same ones every 6-10 months...

@@tryduck6993 I’ve seen worse repairs in first world countries, these guys aren’t all that bad. Considering what they’re working with, it’s not too bad of a job and given the relatively small population in the country, there’s not nearly as many mechanics who know how to work on engines. These guys are more than likely at maximum efficiency fixing these engines with the process they use because all of the contractors go to the same few guys over and over and over again. Plus, even if they are doing 6 month overhauls, again, these guys are so efficient with their process that it probably takes them half the time to repair and replace everything that’s broken or worn. It’s not perfect but, these guys are keeping those trucks on the road, flawless repairs or not.

@@tryduck6993 the cost is way more cheaper compared to any first world country tho for this overhaul it would cost around 1lac 50k Pakistani rupees which is around 1000bucks American u decide if it’s good enough

I think the valves were stamps with a cylinder number, but what I know is how did a 2 valve per cylinder become a 4 valve OHC?

@@Altair885 If you don't know anything about building engines you shouldn't comment about it. You can't just throw in new parts, they have to be fitted, specifically the rings MUST be measured AFTER the REQUIRED crosshatch from honing is done. The ring gaps MUST be set for each individual cylinder. The rings will not seat properly, the engine will have low compression, low power, and burn oil if you don't. This step is critical on ALL gas and diesel engine rebuilds. No exceptions.
