I know the open “mud room” concept is very on trend right now, but unless you only have coats that blend with your decor palette, I think I would definitely keep doors on the closet since it is the first thing you see from the front door. You do such great work! I love watching you make your house a home. ❤️

But how many coats could two ppl have that it would be that crowded? It's only for the stuff you grab on your way out the door or for friends to put thier coats and shoes. I think it's better for doors off....

I would do half a rod for items that you use less frequently and use hooks on the other side for every day coats and items! You can use a bracket for the end that doesn’t have a wall for support and can then even add a shelf on top of that. OR you can do rods going front to back of the closet on either end. I’d keep the doors on for whenever you need a break for looking inside the closet :) good luck and love the bench!

Yay that it passed the sit test😁I agree with hooks because they seem more practical and look more aesthetic even if it means less space. The storage is beautiful and the colours and textures complement each other perfectly. Love it, Tina! 😌

You could stagger an odd number of hooks. Like 3 or 4 across up high and then 2 or 3 staggered beneath those. Something like that maybe, so you can have more hooks.

The bench looks great. For the hang bar I would recommend placing one all the way to the left running front to back. This will make the hang bar short and out of the way. You can use the short hang bar for out of season jackets. Then put a few large coat hooks over the bench for the coats you are currently using. :) You will have the ease of a coat hook but can also store out of season coats without looking cluttered. :)

@Tina Le Earlier today I saw on 2 different videos where they used shellac instead of sanding and priming over smooth and even shiny surfaces - perfect for IKEA furniture. I believe it comes in both a can & a spray. So crazy… I never knew this tip before and then see it twice in one day from different creators. Now I’m here and you asked! So, yes, no prepping (other than cleaning for used surfaces), just apply the shellac and allow to fully dry. Then paint away to your heart’s content. PS: the shellac will usually fill in shallow scratches & dings so they’ll be less noticeable or even disappear once painted. PPS: OMG I’ve never heard of pole wrap before today and now yours is the 2nd video today! 😁 I think you’d enjoy seeing how Drew of Lone Fox used it to transform a Billy bookcase. It got my creative juices flowing. It’s on Architectural Design YT channel.

Definitely wise to use that primer! I've tried high end chalk paint on an ikea desk without primer & it flaked off. I now use a high adhesion primer when painting glossier surfaces. You'll see a big difference in your piece for sure, especially since it's a pretty high traffic item. I'm loving all your vids lately!

Dear Tina, I can't wait to see what you do I love closet makeovers! So far the cabinet turned out great! I don't mean to just mention my video😊 but, since you asked for inspiration I did a closet makeover recently and it was very challenging to fit a family of 4 and utilities. So I built cubbies from scrapwood and reconfigured the whole thing. If you still need inspiration take a look and let me know if it was helpful in any way. Have a wonderful week!

I vote for taking the doors off and doing an open storage soloution, maybe you could even add a long horizontal shelf above the bench where you can store baskets for things like gloves, hats etc. I also would opt for hooks because I never put my coat on a hanger either.

I would one of those rods that have a shelf on top for some baskets or something like that, and I'd do S hooks on the rod instead of hangers. I think it works like the hooks on the wall but you could maybe hang more stuff? Also I'd change the doors to something else but not leave it open since closets can be pretty messy sometimes. Great job on the bench!!! it looks amazing! I know the no door, wall hook can be really cute but I would think more about the everyday use a closet gets.

I used that bead board on my kitchen island a few months ago and love how it turned out. I honestly only used it because the store’s saw wasn’t working that day so I couldnt have them cut down a 4x8 bead board to size (both to fit in my car to travel and to use on the counter). So I opted for the pack you piece together and it was so easy to use - much easier than wrestling with a large piece. 🙂 Loving the DIYs as always!

If you stager the hooks in two horizontal rows, you'll be able to hang more items. There are also pre-made coat racks like this, I think they're called acordian coat racks 🤔. You could also do a vertical row of hooks on either side of your space for things like bags, hats, scarves, or light jackets to maximize your usable space.

The bench turned out awesome! Wouldn't have guessed it's from the kids section. I agree on the hooks instead of a rod. I would go with hooks that have multiple hooks in one (for example, a similar style like the KARTOTEK form Ikea) this maximizes the space if you hang multiple of them. I can't wait for the closet makeover! hope you share it with us :)

In regards to primer or no primer with chalk paint. I have a cabinet that I attempted to paint with chalk paint that was that slick, shiny finish and it basically beaded up and it left tiny holes in the paint. So, yes a primer or scuff sanding is needed when you're painting over that type of finish.

You could do a rod with S hooks - then you don't have to use coat hangers to hang your jackets, but you can also fit more in the closet. It also gives you the option of using coat hangers for any coats you use less often so you can tuck them to the far side of the pole tightly together while having easy access to the jackets you more frequently use on the S hooks.

Hey Tina! Thanks for showing your awesome cabinet transformation! I vote for saying "buh-bye" to the bifold doors (they suck!) and "yes" to hooks. Can't tell how much wall space you have surrounding the closet opening - someone else's comment of a modern frosted glass barn door instead sounds beautiful. However, I vote for no doors. Also, not really sure how this cabinet makeover will truly fit your vision...not sure the dynamics of a drawer fit the space re: accessibility. How about a bench that expands the entire width with cubbies underneath like your inspo pic? And since you have that "bump-out" in the back corner to contend with - make a cubby tower on top of the bench (to camouflage the bump-out) & hold all of your smaller on-the-go-must-have items . You style your house so beautifully - it's ok that it looks like people actually live there!!!

I think if you put in a hanging rod then that defeats the purpose of the bench because when you sit down you’ll be sitting in all the hanging coats, vs hooks sit flush on the wall giving you more sitting space.

We don’t have an IKEA or Target close by so I have to shop at Walmart or what’s available online. Last year I replaced a dark espresso cube organizer I bought years ago that had been abused by my son during toddler years. I saw this on Walmart’s website and really like how the finish looks but the best thing is it’s raised on a metal base so it doesn’t look as chunky and dark as those that just rest directly on the floor. Plus they have multiple finishes with coordinating base colors. Only wish that they would make wider shelves than just cube size. This finish suits a mid-century style ~~~~~~ Better Homes & Gardens 8-Cube Storage Organizer with Metal Base, Vintage Walnut

I think you could actually get away with doing what you plan with the shelves, adding hooks across and along the very top of the closet add a long rail. The intention with the rail to be overflow for when lots of guests are there at say Thanksgiving etc but also so your seasonal jackets can hang in the section hidden behind the wall where there's that small bit of space. The hooks then along the back of the closet above the bench and the shelving to the side. That way everything is neat, you use the hooks everyday and seasonally change the coats over as you need or you can have fancier coats that aren't used as much there since your more likely to hang those back up. Also you can buy those long thin cushions from the second bench on Amazon 😉 On the topic of the doors would you consider getting a door which lets you open it all the way over to one side but can be moved to either side when opened as I think that would give you the most space
