Thank you for this comprehensive review and tutorial. .I unpacked the machine and started reading the manual and felt myself becoming overwhelmed. I decided to find a KZfaq tutorial before I continued and found yours. By the time I finished it I felt much more confident and just had my first cup of delicious (gold setting) coffee. Can't wait till tomorrow morning to start playing with the custom settings. Thank you so much.

Awesome! I'm so glad I could help you feel more comfortable with your new purchase. I still love mine. I like using my own settings in "my brew". If you start playing around with the temperature, bloom and time it can really make a difference in how your coffee tastes. 195 for dark roast and 205 for very light roast. Good luck! Cheers.

I'm sure by now you know that standby setting is the timer for the display illumination. I just took possession of my coffee maker as a Christmas present to myself. The instruction manual doesn't make the setting obvious and once I read between the lines I figured it out. I can't wait to fiddle with it more, but I'll need a better grinder first, maybe the Smart Grinder Pro. One think I found interesting (weird) was, you basically need to use full 12 cup filters. The 8-12 cup filters are a but too small. However I did find a use for them. Since the provided basket allows sediment to get to the carafe I use them under the basket to catch it, that is until I get the larger filters. Thanks for the walk through. Almost as good as the instruction manual.

Thanks! I never did figure that out :-) Now I know. I have been happy with the OXO burr grinder with integrated scale. It's great to set the number of grams you want! On the flat mesh filter, yes it does leave sediment, but most mesh filters do. It's a thing. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Melinda. When brewing coffee does it make a fairly loud steaming noise with steam coming out thru the lid of the basket? Mine does and I'm not sure if it is something I need to adjust on the brewer or is it something wrong with it. Thanks
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marius! Thanks for the question. Actually, it does make some steaming noises. That's perfectly normal. I'd like to say I knew why, but I can only assume that it's because the boiler is getting the water to the proper temperature (up to 205) and it's releasing some steam, otherwise there would be a pressure build up and things could get messy! But I'm not a scientist, I just play one on t.v.

Good afternoon. We are looking at buying a new drip coffee maker. however, after watching the video, and especially with the conclusion, the Breville may have way more options than what we require. We like good coffee, and we like to change coffee grains, but it will pretty much always be the same settings. What less expensive machine would you recommend?
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sinmaan. I will be honest, I actually don't use most of the settings either! I pretty much always use the "my brew" setting every time. But this feature alone is worth it to me. Because when I have a light roasted coffee, I can turn the temperature up, and increase the bloom time, and even have the water flow slow for better extraction! Then when I switch to a very dark roast I either select fast brew or I make the bloom time 10 seconds, lower the water temperature and set it to medium water flow. This makes for a perfect cup no matter what coffee I'm using. I have not found another machine that will do this. If you want a brewer that will brew hot enough, you will want an SCA-certified brewer and it will cost you $200 and up. There are many options, the Ninja, the Technivorm are great options. If you want a simple brewer that is good enough, the Bonavita has a good reputation, and I have had good luck with the Cuisinart coffee makers and you can find either for under $150, but always go with the thermal carafe because the warming plates make your coffee taste gross. IMO. :-) let me know what you pick!!!

I have seen in some videos that the pour over setting at 205 degrees with 8 oz of coffee only comes out in the cup about 135 to 140 degrees a little on the cool side. Does this happens with yours? May be it needs 20 ounces or more to brew hotter temperatures in the cup at the 205 degree setting. What have you experienced temperature wise with different brewing size options? Thanks
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee 4 жыл бұрын
@@orrinbelcher6593 Hi Orrin. I have done some testing of the temperatures, and it does seem to have lower temperatures in the cup when using less water. It is likely because the cup is cold. But the coolest temperature I measured was at 153 degrees when brewing 12 oz. Since I'm a whimp when it comes to hot temps, it doesn't bother me at all. Plus it seems to still taste perfectly brewed! So it's a WIN for me :-)

Thanks for your full review! Can I ask, how flat does your grinds bed end up in the cone basket when you finish? I have just bought one and, so far, have always got the grinds coating the edges of the cone filter paper nearly all the way up in a thin layer, rather than forming a nice flat bed at the bottom, when using about 1L / 30oz of water on the ‘Gold’ setting (mine is the UK version, where the brand name is ‘Sage’). Just wondering if I am doing something wrong, have a faulty machine, or if that’s just the way this brewer does it.
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. You’ll never get a great flat bed from an auto coffeemaker. The only method that will create this will be a pour over method. The slower the pour the better. And even with pour over you need to swirl in the middle. So, yeah… that’s auto brewing and convenience. ❤️☕️

Can you make a concentrated cold brew and then add cold water to increase it from 20 oz?
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
Cold brew is already concentrated, so you would always add water or milk to dilute your final drink. I'm sure you could put some more coffee grounds in, but you'd need to get the ratio just right so it all fits into the brewing basket without overflowing! There's only so much water/coffee grounds that will fit in the basket. If you want to make a larger batch of cold brew, I highly recommend getting the coffee toddy maker! It makes about 50-60 ounces of cold brew concentrate so it lasts a long time! Personally I prefer making larger batches. Check out the brewer on beanhoppers.com

Oh I know! I seriously had the same issue. I love the technivorm machine. It’s makes amazing coffee. Really. But the technivorm has a cleaner design and top quality and a nice brew head... so hard! Good luck with that choice! 😃

I just bought one 2 months ago cause I got tired of the mess of making espresso and chasing the elusive perfect pull. I do kinda miss my long blacks but so far I like this machine. I wish you had demonstrated using the Over Ice mode because I use it to make iced coffee following the James Hoffman recipe, 60% water and 40% ice, 9:1 ratio, 300ml water in reservoir, 200ml ice in receiving vessel. I do not brew into the thermal carafe instead I brew into a Mason jar or my old Starbucks iced coffee pitcher. I'm not sure if not using the carafe impacts the brew strength. So was hoping you had tried it.
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee Жыл бұрын
Hi George, I actually did not use the over ice brewing method, and I probably would not be the right person to answer what works best because I really dislike iced coffee. I think it's always bitter. Something about the reaction that happens when hot brewed coffee hits ice makes it that way for me. Even if I cool it off first. Hot water extracts all of the positive compounds from your coffee, and often times some of the negative compounds. When you put it over ice, it essetuates that, and I don't like it at all. Cold brewing coffee is a much better way to get cold coffee. Pour cold brew over ice and it's magical!
@ggivensjr
@ggivensjr Жыл бұрын
@@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee I like traditional cold brew, too. But depending on the coffee I sometimes want to taste the intricacies of the bean, aka taste notes and cold brew, as you eluded to does not extract those taste. Find James Hoffman KZfaq recipe for Iced Coffee (aka Japanese iced coffee) he explains it much better than I do. I realize the precision brewer BDC455/450 will do cold brew but like you said when I make cold-brew I typically make a double batch at least 32 oz and the precision brewer is limited to 20 oz maximum for cold-brew. So when making cold-brew I typically use my Mason jars and make concentrate that last up to 7-10 days. I also like sweetener in my coffee so when making cold-brew or iced coffee I make homemade simple syrup because granular sugar or stevia don't dissolve well in cold coffee. Thanks for the video and conversation.

Have you tested the temperature to make sure its consistent to SCA standards?
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee 4 жыл бұрын
I have actually tried, but my method is not very scientific. I used my kitchen thermometer as close to the shower head as possible and I only measured it at 192, when I had it set at 201. I'm sure the SCA is better at measuring these elements than I am! :-)

8oz in a cup!
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee
@BeanHoppersCraftCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
Haha right!? That’s how it’s supposed to work.... but not in the coffee world. They have to make it fancy and confuse everyone. European made coffee makers call 5 oz. one cup of coffee. Here in the US, one cup of coffee is 6 oz. but in cooking it’s 8 oz... If you have a coffeemaker that’s says it’s an 8 cup coffeemaker, get a measuring cup out and measure how many ounces it takes to get to the 8 cup mark. It’s either going to be 40 oz or 48 oz depending on the brand. So if 8 oz is really a “cup” then it should be called a 5 or 6 cup coffeemaker. But it’s not. They’re all like that. This is why we calculate our measures in coffee by oz. or grams instead of cups. Cups means different things. Oz and grams are always the same. 😊☕️
@ggivensjr
@ggivensjr Жыл бұрын
The SCA brew ratios cone in two measures, one is connoisseur 6oz, one is standard 8oz. Melinda is correct that the overwhelming majority of drip coffee makers manufactured in the United States measure cups as 6oz.
