As someone who was thinking about getting into filmmaking, being an extra on multiple sets made me realize it's not for me. Such long days are not my jam, but I really appreciate films so much more now.

Yes. It's worth it for the .5% of A list actors who get their choice of great projects and huge paychecks. For everyone else especially including the crew, it is incredibly long hours with very minimal award. Especially if you're shooting on location somewhere far from home.

I wanted to get into narrative, live action filmmaking at first - then after film school my first gig ended up being in documentary, which typically has far more flexible hours... now I work in production for an animation studio and it's 9-5 baby (with long contracts, working from home). Working on a live action film set would not be for me either. But there are other options out there if you really wanna work in the industry!

@myflyingkidney

this is infuriating. why are we still talking about this as if it is normal? why are we still considering 14 or 16 hour days a completely normal thing? when the union threatened to strike I had a little hope but now I am back to being angry because this is not how work should be. working 14 hour days, not seeing your partner or kids and getting sick before the age of 60 is not normal. do you know how many hours people work on film sets in finland for example? 8 to max 10 hours. and that is including precalls and possible clean up or any kind of work done after the wrap. so the idea that you can't make the production work with less time simply isn't true. I am tired of working on film it is a crappy, gruelling job unless you live in scandinavia where work laws are normal.

At 4 and a half minutes in, Conan pulls a Conan and switches the topic to himself. Up until that point, Mila was walking through her experience as a producer, and actor in "one of the most fun productions" she's ever been on. Mila is not mentioned in the title, description, or thumbnail, and there are no links to - or info about - her film either. I like Conan, but that's disappointing.
@MozzieSquad
@MozzieSquad Жыл бұрын
It's a small clip from a much longer conversation/podcast. The title of the clip was about Conan's part in a movie. I'm actually surprised they had so much of Mila in this clip. There's more clips from this podcast on the channel. Not sure what you're disappointed about.
@andrewfisher8250
@andrewfisher8250 Жыл бұрын
@@MozzieSquad The clip begins with a conversation about Mila's journey, and feels like it wants to be about that. It appears to me as though Conan has surrounded himself with people who play into the insecurity schtick, which makes it easy to pretend like Mila's accomplishments are pedestrian in light of her previous successes, whereas Conan's are exciting considering his ineptitude. But the truth is, both are masters at their craft. Conan gets away with switching the conversation to himself because in the eyes of his fans and employees, it's all jokes, he's not REALLY that into himself. But, in actuality, what happened? The conversation moved from her accomplishments to his. The part that's disappointing is the loss of respect for everyone involved in participating in such self-deprecating, but ultimately self-serving mirror gazing. Just let Mila have her moment to shine.
@MozzieSquad
@MozzieSquad Жыл бұрын
@UCRzx_wHUujRKazevTCwD8gg Interesting take. I felt that he was trying to use his personal experience to try to compliment Mila (and others in that field) by saying 'I got to taste that world recently, and I discovered it's tough, and now I have even more respect and admiration for the talent and discipline it takes'. It didn't feel like Conan was trying to make it about him to me. Maybe I'm just giving him the benefit of the doubt though.
@andrewfisher8250
@andrewfisher8250 Жыл бұрын
@@MozzieSquad I think it could be both. My point wasn't about Conan's intent, but more about the cult of insecurity that I've noticed surrounding Conan, which this clip and it's title and description demonstrate, in my opinion. I used to be on Conan's side, but I'm slowly coming to a perspective where that insecurity no longer feels useful. I'm thinking also of the clip with Jeff Goldblum where Conan sings for a moment in his real voice. It's beautiful, haunting, and real, and yet surrounded by a comedic criticism from Conan and his cohorts. Jeff Goldblum was the only one in the room honest enough to stop and say no, this is important. This is what matters. Comedy is tough because it requires humility and a critical eye, but there's a way to do it that doesn't take the air out of the room,. To me, the turn in this conversation took the importance of what Mila was sharing (I'm trying to avoid bringing up the element of breaking the glass ceiling), and made it feel trivial. I'm sad about that. I appreciate what you're saying, and I bet that would be Conan's feeling too, but I don't think it negates the end effect.
@MozzieSquad
@MozzieSquad Жыл бұрын
@@andrewfisher8250thoughts well considered. I think Conan has talked about his insecurity before, which probably does show some times more than others. Also his self depreciating humour is something I appreciate, but can understand how it can sometimes take away from moments. I listened to the Jeff Goldblum convo too and noticed how difficult it was for Conan not to 'ham it up' as it were in that moment. It seemed difficult for him to be vulnerable to sing normally. Interesting thoughts, while I can't say I agree wholeheartedly, thanks for the considered and respectful exchange.

I constantly push back against the idiots online who always bemoan actors as lazy rich elites who stand on a spot say a few words and make millions. If you think it is so easy, why aren't you doing it? Explain to me why? Hollywood will take ANYONE. Hell, you don't even need to be able to act. TRUST ME. I've worked with so many atrocious actors. You just need to look the part and be willing to work your ass off 15 hours a day. it is grueling work. I feel like i've been hit by a truck every day i get home. Then i sleep for 4 hours and back to it the next day. Now try doing it in October under rain tower for 15 hours, pretending like it is summer. Acting is hard, miserable, brutal work.

I am having a massive funding slump (along with the hundreds of international volunteers) and we desperately need some PR or any kind of attention. I have a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Anything you guys could do would have a direct impact. (People have been saying that they have already given to XYZ organization and everything but how does everyone expect the donations TO GET TO THE FRONT LINE TOWNS?!?! haha we have been using our savings accounts and selling valuables to be able to continue to drive humanitarian aid , provide medical treatment, and evacuate people).
