How do you transform a household object or vehicle into a creature or character? James collaborated with KZfaqr Stan Prokopenko to launch a concept-art design challenge. Over 1000 of you responded. James Gurney judged the competition and offers his selection of some of the best entries.
THE CHALLENGE
The goal is to reimagine a household object or vehicle as a creature or character.
RULES:
• Transform household objects or vehicles into a character or creature! Depict them interacting with an environment rather than individual character design. It can be a drawing, painting, or sculpture. Digital or traditional.
• Post it to your IG account using #prokochallenge
• James will judge based on originality, consistency of vision, well-thought-out implied story, and convincing execution in terms of design, color, lighting, dynamics, and perspective.
• Deadline was Monday, June 1 at 11:59 pm
PRIZES:
1st place - Wacom One Creative Pen Display, signed print with a sketch by James Gurney, and the Proko Figure, Portrait, and Anatomy courses.
2nd place - Wacom Intuos medium tablet, signed print with a sketch by James Gurney, and 1 Proko course of their choice.
3rd place - Signed print with a sketch by James Gurney and 1 Proko course of their choice
RANDOM WINNER - To give students a higher chance of winning, a random winner will also get a Wacom Intuos small tablet and signed print with a sketch by James Gurney
PROKO TEAM CHOICE - The Proko team will choose their favorite along with a few fun awards with prizes TBD.

the feedback you are providing for lighting, such as for the moon backlit painting, is invaluable, just goes to show how much of a fresh visual library you have stored up in your brain. thanks to masters like you adopting mediums like youtube to pass down the knowledge before disappearing.

I'm blown away by all the amazingly talented artists who participated. Almost 20 years ago I designed a monster character called Mile's the Monster that was created by a concrete racetrack coming to life - don't think I've drawn a creature from a real life object since - inspired to try it again one day. Thanks for doing this.

Not sure if anyone else caught this, but in Phil tomato's piecr, with the tatooing water machine, he put a SpongBobSquarePants refrence. The painting top right is from a SpongBob episode were squidward tries to sell his art. Its called "bold and Brash" awesome culture refrence!

Dear James Gurney, thank you for your videos and great books. You're an inspiration to follow. I have a suggestion to make: Recently I discoveres that book nooks - an inlay for your book shelf - is the latest craze. I saw Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings themed nooks. I don't know how to describe them - I'm not a native speaker of English - so I suggest you give it a quick search on KZfaq yourself. I think you'd really enjoy the making of one such book nook. My first thought was oh James Gurney should do a Dinotopia one. Thank you, greetings from Germany

James, you are too much! I never would have thought I'd hear the words "panpsychism" in a "how to" art video. It's especially strange because this is an interest of mine as well. Maybe there is another "ism" by which the like minded communicate with each other. Do what you do, James. Paint, muse, philosophise ...I love your videos and look forward to every one.

Hi James, I have a slightly off topic question. How do you keep your sketch books flat? I'm using a wire bound 5.5x8.5 mixed media book and it curls up after I ground coat it with acrylic. I hear you talk about ground coating casein, will it stay flatter than acrylic. I'm using gouache for my paintings and I love it. Very versatile. Love your videos!

Anthropomorphizing a silly object is fine for art, but actually believing that everything is conscious is to reject humanity's best understanding of psychology. Consciousness is born of complex systems of neurons that evolved over billions of years via natural selection, not random arrangements of atoms of any and all sorts.

I loved the video, except for the entry with the pencil sharpener. That was totally inappropriate! (and maybe the tattoo artist) I was thinking this would be a great intro for a lesson in art class for middle schoolers, but I'd have to try to cut those portions out.

Censorship has no place in art. It's getting where it seems the entire world enjoys being outraged and offended over something. If it doesn't suit your personal beliefs, move on. Other people don't have to agree with you.
@anthonymccarthy4164
@anthonymccarthy4164 4 жыл бұрын
Love your videos but panpsychism is rather meaningless. When humans talk about "consciousness" they mean something like human consciousness. It's impossible for us to more than sense what animal consciousness means - I am sure it's there, I'm sure it's got some similarities to human consciousness, I have no idea even what that means. You make the inanimate objects appear like animals which you either know have consciousness as we discuss it or like animals which we have a vague conception of. If inanimate objects have something like consciousness, it's consciousness unlike the consiousness of human experience. You have converted me to gouache but you won't convert me to panpsychism. I'm not a dualist or a monist, I'm a person who admits there are enormous ranges of reality which we will never start to comprehend.
