We review the Cone Splitter by Moshare. It is advertised as a Log Splitter but it will not split a log of any size. It is best for splitting kindling from small size pieces of wood. It will do this task and we demonstrate splitting several types of wood. There are also examples of splitting with the cone splitter and a hatchet on the same type of wood.

I don't have one of these, but the physics (I imagine) of how it works, you need to split from the end, not put it right in the middle. You're putting it in the spot where the wood has the most leverage to fight against it.
@DIYwithWayne

I thought the same thing to start with. However this thing does a very poor job splitting from the end of the log. The middle lengthwise is also a problem and it works better near the end. If you want to see more examples of this and compared to a Kindlin Cracker check out this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLBndJZe3rK3eHk.html I show multiple examples of both and in several different types of wood. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Why on earth would you drill into the side of the log? Isn't it better to drill into the log verticcally, while the log is held in a vice for safety?

No, Watch this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLBndJZe3rK3eHk.html where I compared the cone splitter, the Kindlin Cracker and an ax. I show more examples of each. The cone splitter does not do well from the end of the log. The best is to the side near the end. However, I don't recommend the cone splitter. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Dang! I wish I'd have seen your video before I bought one! My husband scored a hammer-drill at a yard sale for $5. Then we bought the bit online- not a fancy stainless steel one, just a black hardened steel one. He tried to use the bit- went about 3/4 of an inch into the wood and got stuck- drill started smoking! Ha! I guess it's back to the splitting maul and a sledge hammer. :) Thanks! I'm glad I only spent $16 on my auger; I would have been really angry if I put out $60.

Thanks, I just bought a cheap 2 part auger for £8 off eBay and have come to the same conclusion as yourself. I tried it on some ash and it just got stuck with the drill smoking. Reverse unscrewed the adapter from the auger, so I had to put the auger in a vice and unscrew the wood from the auger. Junk box for the auger, I will stick with the hatchet or splitting bomb/hammer combination.

Apparently these are only meant to split kindling, the diagrams in the instructions I saw, showed that the user should drive the bit into the end of the wood, and at one side or the other of that end. So, from the edges only, which prevents the bit from being wedged in, and shaves your kindling off the sides of the wood that's being split. The instructions specifically showed that the user should NOT drive the bit into the middle of a log, whether at the end or in the middle of the log. That's why you're getting stuck there. Thanks for the content. Keep up the good work. BS'D

You need to adjust the torque threshold to below “drill” when the torque threshold is passed it will click. Which seems alarming, but it’s fine. Ride the click and watch what happens. It still spins but in pulses. Think of those clicks as little punches. Aim for weak spots like you’re doing when you hatchet.

You might find it useful to make holes or small cracks in hardwood, and THEN attack it right there with a wedge or an axe. That would work quite good, I tested the 45 cm splitting drill with a 800 watt powerdrill and I must say that the narrower the drill, the better! 35 cm does things way safer for the drill and it's easier to stick it / drill out

It would seem to that if the wood was secured by stepping on it to hold it down, that would allow 2 hands on the drill thus reducing hand strain. It's obvious that you have to choose the wood you want to split & this tool was made for straight grained wood

Holy cow he's splitting real world wood! Haha! This is the opposite of those European wood splitting videos where they have perfectly straight grained, knot free wood that splits like a bundle of uncooked spaghetti. Starting in the middle of the piece is a bad idea as others have already said. When, with any other method, would you start at the middle of a piece? If you are interested in trying it, you may want to get an old candle and spin some wax on it. Could make a bit difference, but don't know for sure. Nothing will beat the speed of a hatchet, or the Estwing Fireside Friend, which I highly recommend, for kindling in my opinion. But if you have some easy splitting stuff and your having children do it, this might be worth the money for safety sake only. You'd have to install the handle on the drill and build a splitting station to keep the wood from windmilling them to death, though. Ha! Looks like a pretty tool that's not ready for prime time. Thanks for posting the video.

Why are splitting such small pieces?
@DIYwithWayne
@DIYwithWayne 2 жыл бұрын
The smallest pieces are used when starting a fire. They will light faster than larger pieces. Then larger small pieces are added to build the fire. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Hello Christian, Thanks for the comment but I got to say, my drill is stronger than I am. If you watched when the cone splitter bound up, the drill would spin me around. After making this video, my hand and arm were sore from trying to hold the drill. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

That might be better in a drill press.
@DIYwithWayne
@DIYwithWayne 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe but if it binds in the wood, it takes longer to turn the drill press off. Also, a drill press would have more power and if it binds, it could do some real damage spinning the wood around. A much better solution is the Kindling Cracker. I did a comparison of the two in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLBndJZe3rK3eHk.html In the end, I really don't like the cone splitter. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Put the accessory handle on the drill to prevent injury. Also the wood can spin and hit you hard. Really have to stand on it or have it held between some steel rods or something

@@DIYwithWayne it it looks like it bit it has no more than 300W at most. Plus you hold a big drill with two hands and you have much more leverage,and it's heavier. I saw a lot of videos where people try the thorn with battery drill and they all fail. Usualy a thorn is used either with tractor back shaft or big electric motor starting from 1.5kw.

your destroying your drill. its not made for that much power at low rpm.. these splitters needs lots of power at low rpm, lots of people use these "cones" but bigger behind a tractor and that works great. you need some kind of gearbox or maybe a impact gun..

You make a good point about the stress on the drill but I won't be using my cone splitter because I don't thing it works well. I also used a large one connected to a truck rear axel about 40 years ago and would never recommend it. It is TOO DANGEROUS! Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
