The boy's and I test out a cheap drill bit for splitting firewood. Is it better than using an axe?

Thank you for helping me to save time and money before I bought this. I have much larger logs needing splitting

I use these bits in the wood stack inside the garage. I always use them on an impact driver with a drill chuck adapter. Works beautifully and very quick. The key to their effectiveness is definitely using an impact driver and it solves the whole twisty wrist issue when using a powerful drill and the bit grabs and jumps off axis. I’ve had a brace or two on in the past after a couple good wrist spins where the thumb gets locked in by finger pressure and you can’t let go in time. But yes, these wedge bits do work very well with the right driver. Especially when making long burning kindling logs that are split but still stranded together. Extremely effective for that.

It was hard to tell if the log you had issues with splitting was green or dried but I'm sure you know from your woodpile that green wood is the easiest to split, even with an axe or maul. That said, I've split a lot of wood in my day and enjoy using an axe or maul but for the price of the drill bit I may get one for kindling. Often when I'm at my cabin I run out of kindling when building a morning fire. I would not want to use my axe or maul inside my cabin so this bit may be worth a try. Lastly, the rubber croc/sandal shoes on your kids are not a good idea splitting wood.

Those adaptors are for SDS hammer drills. I'm going to get one to try with my SDS and my electric milw. angle drill. Coming off of two surgeries due to OA, I'm not going to be swing the maul any time soon. Also, for splitting with an ax/maul, use the old tire trick.

I think they work better with dry wood. I bought one I think it was worthless. Maybe with an impact driver you might be okay but I don't have one to try it on. I have exactly the same thing and it didn't work very well it just got stuck in the wood and twisted my wrist.

Your electric drill is set to high speed, I see the "2" on the transmission switch. Try putting it in 1 (low gear) so it pulls into the wood a little slower and has more torque.

You do you, but I ain't lettin' my kid split firewood without safety glasses and if he shows up for any job wearing Crocs, I would expect him to be fired. Please, encourage him to look out for his safety on the job. That just isn't the right footwear for what he's trying to do. He isn't old enough to know better yet, so it's up to you to teach him. That log should have been placed much further back on the stump. As you can see right away, not only did he miss the log, but the stump barely stopped the axe. A bad accident was barely avoided.

Why would you need to split such small pieces of wood? You would not use the ax on such small stuff?

This is so unsafe for the little kid. Not because he is small, but because the tree stump on which he was operating the drill is too high for him to properly hold the log with his foot. He should have been holding it on the ground - the ground would be easier for his height. The way it twister his wrist was very dangerous. And the other thing that was dangerous that the father didn’t correct him on and even told him to continue doing it was to drill through the side of it, while the side of it was hanging of the tree stump so much and the only thing that was supporting and holding the piece of log was his tiny foot, or the tree stump that was too high for his height. It’s like a huge accident wait to happen. I’m all for teaching and exposing children to using tools and just be hands on and able to fix something (like our father taught me and my siblings) but goodness me - safety first. Goggles, and correct footwear for the kids, and safe height support, and also the piece of log not hanging off the stump, in fact maybe it’s best to actually do it on the ground so the drill doesn’t hit the tree stump but rather soft ground. I dunno, but as a parent I’m just prone to seeing where the accident is about to happen. Apart from safety that you must address, it’s awesome that you teach your kids all the hands on skills from early age. And while it was dangerous and could have twisted his wrist much worse or even break it, the little one went steadier and lighter on the trigger from there on. I’m glad I found the video prior to buying this drill bit though lol
