Okay, it might look like I'm in a similar place to where I was last year, but thankfully I'm far from it. This is the next part of my training camp with the legend that is Simon Grieve, and this particular day was the one that I was feeling a little sceptical about.
We journeyed to Vale View, a local venue to Simey, to have our first cross-country training session of the year. Seeing as we have had a seriously wet winter here in the UK, no XC places on grass were open around us, so having the arena XC at Vale View was a great way to get some practice in.
I knew that having not been cross country since September of last year, there was a good chance those dreaded thoughts of self-doubt might creep in. That, coupled with it being a freezing day, Jam being very spooky, and being rather ill myself, sadly led to a bit of a wobble with my nerves and some uncharacteristic refusals from Jam.
Now, as I said at the start, it might look like I'm back to square one, but in fact, this was a really great session to show me how far I've come since the famous breakdown at Lucinda's last year. While I did have a little moment, and may have shed a tear, this time I didn't have to get off and end the session; we worked through it!
Of course, it isn't ideal, but I am able to look back on it now and feel motivated to get back out and improve, rather than shy away from doing cross country. I hope you guys appreciate me sharing this; know that you are not alone in your confidence journey.
One day you can be jumping a strange horse in Ireland, then next you're worried to canter your own into a log pile. This sport truly does humble us!

We all comment it time and time again but you need to stop being so bloomin harsh on yourself. You and Jammy are amazing and these are some seriously decent sized jumps, even on a bad day you make them look easy! Remember everyone has their moments and she is not going to do it perfect every single time or she wouldn't be a living creature! Give yourself more credit and dont be so harsh on yourself if its not perfect! ❤

As a very anxious rider you have no idea how much it means to hear you say that things can look okay from the outside but still feel pretty rubbish on the inside. So often people will tell you to 'just do it' or 'just get through it' and I'm there thinking yeah genius, if that were so easy I'd be doing it. I'm starting to learn jumping on my sweet angel share and I am petrified just trotting into a crosspole sometimes and it's just nice to know that even a rider like you, with such talent and skill and achievements, still feels scared sometimes too. Thanks for sharing your journey so honestly, it really does make a difference to riders like me!

Honestly Meg I’m blooming proud of you. Anxiety is hard there is no way of “getting rid” of it and it’s easier said then done when people say just do it. There is always some sort of physical wall infront on me when I have a mental block and sometimes we need to cry and take down the wall brick by brick. So for you to have a few wobbles and then still carry on is blooming amazing as I and many others would and could have easily given up. Fearless isn’t about not being scared it’s about being scared but learning how to find coping mechanisms to help. You both looked fantastic despite what you felt. She had so much scope and I saw you ride forward tooo loads of fences. Genuinely so proud. This is the wobbles that make you stronger and realise anxiety still comes back but learning how to cope is even more amazing. ❤❤

You are a good rider Meg and Jammy is fantastic. One quick little way to change your mindset when things start going wrong, is to smile. Just smiling can trick your mind into being more relaxed. Also sing a favourite song. It is amazing how these two little things can completely change your endorphins. I was having a bad day and used these 2 tricks in my dressage test and I rode the best dressage of my life coming in first place. It carried over into my cross country and show jumping and we won. 😂🎉

Singing while you’re riding, does help nerves. Who cares if people think you’re a little touched in the head when you do it? Your horse will actually like it, too.

Yes!!! I sing jingle bells on the regular while jumping around. It helps me keep a rhythm and keeps the monsters out of my head (self doubt, overthinking distances etc).

Thank you, Meg, for posting the second video. As a trainer, I would have done the same thing as Simey!!! You DID AMAZING!! You can ride, Jammy will get you out of trouble, you KNOW that, and you CAN DO Badders 100. I have complete faith in you. We all have these moments after a major fall. And if someone tells you any different, they are lying their bloody arses off!! I've seen your confidence come back, I know you can do it again. This is a combination of feeling unwell with a head cold, exhausted from all the travelling you do, being constantly filmed etc. Aside from that it is perfectly normal to be afraid and have self doubt. We all know you can do it, you had 2 Connemaras in the top 10 at the Badminton grass roots last year and came 2nd with Jam the year before. We all have wobbles when horse riding and I, for one, love the fact that you actually show this in your videos because it is the actual reality in life. Well done for continuing the session, you really can do this.

It's so tough coming out on a looky forward going horse when it's chilly, you're feeling poorly and it's the first time out this year over solid fences. I think we all have those days where you feel like you ride worse than than others but kudos to you for continuing and getting a bit of the rust shaken off. Putting yourself in positive situations with coaches who can keep you safe and feeling safe but challenged will be part of the key to your success but you already know so just keep following your game plan. 💯

It's interesting having you miked up for this, because you can actually hear how tense you are, by listening to your breathing. It really shows how connected everything is. A big key could be centered breathing, and getting your shoulders down (figuratively as well as physically). It's obviously easy to be on the outside looking in, but I think you might need to get that in hand again. Lots of love.

Pressure release, No sunshine, flu, over working, letting out emotions that you have been holding in, letting go, showing others how much you over come and have to be strong always..sometimes in the right company you just need to breakdown and thats ok all part of training purposes and horses. also any alcohol drunk always comes out as spooking Ghostly shadows the next day, always keep above the spirits when doing cross country , keep alchol for rare occasions doesnt mix well with staying above emotions and horses, you needed support and Simon and Tina were there, .. from our perspective, everything looked fantastic, just a wobbly moment and everything will only get better from now on as the season approaches ❤❤❤

Awwww bless. Horses are so sensitive to our inner selves, and Jammy was clearly listening to how you were feeling ❤ It’s so frustrating that our unconscious selves can skew a situation so far from the outward reality! Especially when we want to perform- Simon reminding you to have fun was his way of trying to dissipate the anxiety for you. ❤ Easier said than done, I know, but good to hear you acknowledging that the hiccups are only temporary!

You are a beautiful rider. I am currently on my second maternity leave in a row (I have an 18 month old and an 8 week old 🙃) all following from buying a farm that needed loads of fix up, starting a new career and the pandemic while being a new crna. Needless to say I haven't ridden regularly in 5 years and my horse was a barely broken 5 year old before all this. I am ready to get back to it even though my nerves will be sky high, and watching your channel over this time has given me such inspiration. Please continue to document your whole journey, as you will regret not seeing how far youve come after killing it at 100, but it really does truly help us to see we arent alone in these feelings and they can be overcome. Much love from the states and I know someone with the heart like you have will do wonders and smash it this year! You can do it!

Oh Meg, you are so hard on yourself sometimes. It's very understandable having a wobble when you hadn't done xc in a while. I'm quite sure that there are a lot of people having similar kind of issues themselves watching this who were cheering you on "YEAH GO MEG!!" as you continued on after Simon had a chat with you. Very well done for not giving up. It would be the easiest thing in the world to hop down off the horse and say no. I've heard that real bravery comes from feeling the fear but doing it anyway. I'm glad you're taking the positives away from the session, that's probably the best way to view it. Take care, lots 'o' love from Ireland x

Oh Meg....been there done that, however I DID NOT have a Simon. The coach ripped me up and down. So. I gathered myself after a clean run. Dismounted and fired my coach. I never would have done that had it not been for a course I took on Self Confidence and Stepping out of ones shoes. I know they have them where you are. I can't begin to tell you how it put me on a pedestal. I paid for my horses to be conditioned ridden and 2x a week by my NEW coach. Both Coach and rider would not take the money. I new then I had positive people along my path. HEAVEN!! I was blocking my own success. I noticed a big difference in how it helped many areas I didnt even notice. That was 2 years. I know host weekends and I see so much of me in you. You're amazing Meg. Get hold and identify those moments....honestly. Jam is great and together you'll fly!!! We all see your gifts!!! I see much to admire in watching this - progress, not perfect. We all want to be perfect, we all want to have the beautiful rides, make the right decisions - but we're human, and reality doesn't work that way, and sometimes it's the rides that don't come easily or effortlessly, the ones we have to fight to eke out and keep together, that end up teaching the most in the long run. A moment of respect to Simon as well - I've ridden with a fair few instructors who have riders on the tipping point and end up pushing them over the edge rather than unpack, support, and enable the horse/rider pair to continue positively. Sometimes our rides humble us - but it means that the next time we have a go at it and it comes together, we can appreciate how spectacular it really is. Cheering you on 💕

Oh, Meg! I felt for you as if it were me there. I'm not going to say "go easy on yourself" b/c you're like me there and you never will LOL. But do understand that EVERYONE (including Simon, the Lucindas, etc.) has confidence dips. The more you have, and the more you recover from, the more able you are to deal with them. So unfortunately, that means there will be more! But just stay in that headspace where you are now, where you understand that they happen and you can move past them. And as you know, you are transferring your stress to Jammy--she actually looked fabulous the first few rounds, but she caught your worries as time went by. She knows you better than you know yourself, you know! And I also think that arena was just confusing b/c there were so many big, solid fences. She's not used to that. She's used to a crowd of show jumping fences, or Xctry fences all strung out over acres and acres. I can imagine that she would easily get distracted by nearby jumps and be unsure what is being asked of her. No, Banksy didn't, but he's a gelding. He has no job. A boss mare's job is to look out around her to protect her herd (you) and to constantly be on alert. Which is a wonderful thing, but, you know, has a flip side. Anyway, LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE YOU!!!! Hang in there girl. YOU CAN RIDE. YOU HAVE A FABULOUS HORSE. ALL WILL BE WELL!!!

I really appreciate you sharing this session. I’ve take up horseback riding in my 40’s (recreational midlife crisis) and I have sessions like this (at a much simpler riding level). It’s comforting to see a rider of your caliber has moments too; makes me feel more normal. Not that you need any advice from a novice, but I find two things help me… praising the horse for each thing that goes right, and focusing on the fact that I am training the horse with each ride. You look amazing, and I know it felt awful, but the fact that you’re able to reflect honestly on it means the lessons are working even if they feel off in the moment.

As someone who suffered from a severe lack of confidence when riding, I feel your pain. In my case it got so bad that I stopped jumping entirely and stuck to dressage. Confidence is hard won but easily lost. The mind is incredibly powerful and it is hard to get past doubt yourself. Onwards and upwards though Meg 🐎

Meg, we all as riders have these moments. I t is amazing how long it takes to build up confidence, and then how quickly that confidence can come crashing down. Good on you for working through it and thank you for posting it!

I call it "defensive mode" after something goes wrong, it kicks in to us. Simon was amazing making you go over and over it, and when he says but dont stop her, hes such a good friend but a awesome teacher for you, cause he knows what you're going through. Its hard to see you go through this, cause we see a amazing couple in jumping, you are both totally amazing together, i love watching you both so much. Dont forget to contact your talking person (forgotten the name while writing this lol). You dont need to show us everything, we as horsey people and not, totally understand, everyone has bad days, but you pushed yourself through it and thats the key! you can do this babe xxx 😊 You aggressive bit at the end woke my dog up, he looked around at the screen as if to say wth lol😂 😂

As someone who’s really been struggling with anxiety lately (another kind than yours) I could totally feel how on the edge you were. And then it was so so gratifying and motivational to see you working through it. Even though you had hiccups, that session was totally a success! Don’t be too hard on yourself, you’re doing so good!

Honestly meg not every ride will be perfect! Don’t put yourself down ever your such a nice rider and everyone has confidence issues when riding if you don’t you aren’t riding properly! I’ve gone through so many confidence issues with my youngster and it comes back. That one bad ride will not effect your riding as a whole it wasn’t much of a bad ride. Having Simon there seems to be such a great idea he knows what he’s on about and he’s so reassuring I would love to be taught by Simon! Keep your head up Meg it will get better!! ❤

As an anxious rider myself, especially in jumping. The best thing I've ever done mentally to help myself from causing my own problems in riding (i.e, stops, run outs, riding poorly) is to put trust in my trainer that they wouldn't ask me to do something that was above mine or my horses skill level and to also "Fake it till you make it" meaning I fake my confidence and try to ride like nothing is bothering me. This gives my horse the confidence to do their job. In turn when they do jump the scary jump, it makes my confidence a little more genuine because "we did it", "its not that scary". Now I can trust my horse a little bit more when I'm nervous to take care of me and to have my back. I've found that talking out loud to my horse saying "we've got this" and the likes helps me to trick my brain a little. Also focusing on trusting your trainer and thinking on how they wouldn't ask you to do something you cant do helps to focus your brain on someone else and then you cant think about all your short comings or doubts. Take from this what you will, you're an amazing rider and your trainers know it, you've got talented and dedicated horses that you've partnered yourself with. Believe in yourself, and if that fails believe in the people and horses that believe in you.

Meg thankyou so much for showing us all this gritty bits. It makes me feel so much less alone in my lack of confidence at times with my own horse. Its really giving me the confidence to work through my own confidence issues.

Thank you for showing us these moments. As someone who struggles with confidence A LOT, it is very reassuring that it's okay to have these dips as long as you believe it can get better again. Riding is a never ending learning curve about yourself and your abilities and that can SUCK but it can also make you feel mighty when you come out of it on top. Thank you for sharing, live laugh love you :)

I completely understand how you feel. Its been 3 years for me and im still at the same point, only just now relaxing and letting the strides happen and not worry about falling off but rather enjoying it. it just takes time, and its so difficult when you dont want it to take years but it will and you just have to find things that make you happy within riding. its okay to be disappointed and want to be perfect again but its not reality, have fun with the small things and you will get there. you cant just get over it, the experience was scary and near deadly, its okay for it to take time and stay in the same place for a while. just try your best to stay positive, there are a lot of people who are going through the same thing as you and you are not alone in this experience.

Oh Meg. I’d love to say I can’t believe anyone’s got anything horrible to say about you as I along with 99% of everyone else that sees your content thinks you’re absolutely amazing! People that comment nasty things are just jealous and bored grasping for any way to feel important or relevant. Just keep doing you, be KIND to yourself! Even when others aren’t and it’s common place to self resent. You are an inspiration to so many equestrians, young and older and likely all over the world! I haven’t been subbed super long but I have already got so much admiration and respect for you as a person and equestrian!! Keep it up, you are good enough, & you are worthy of your success

I totally get it. Stops always shake me. Jam takes our cues from you. Think of it positively. She is so in tune with you that she senses worry. A horse that doesn't care about how you feel won't care what you think. Jammy knows you and she can feel your worry. Trust that she can do it. Trust that you can do it. Don't worry about a lack of confidence because everyone has that. The panic is real but so is the accomplishment. You and Jammy are amazing. Breath deeply. Simon is right. Do some baby jumps and then move forward. You can both do it. Cross country is hard. The fences are hard. Do your pole work to get yourself relaxed and then move on to some bigger jumps. The wobbles happen but you did not stop. You needed Simey to push you on and give external confidence that you can do it. I remember last year with Ellie and the breakdown. Then the build up! Keep it going. Practice, practice practice and try not to do it when you are sick!! You guys will do it, will get over it and I'm proud of you and Jam!

I bubbled watching this cos I feel every bit of your nerves and the stomach flip and the saying out loud omg I can't. I've been there so many times over far simpler fences and smaller! But give yourself a pat on the back for carrying on and trying your best and building the blocks up step by step. Confidence is such a fragile beast and the tiniest of blips can knock us off its perch. Keep at it...and it's so lovely to see the raw honest footage....well done for being so brave. We are all rooting for you Meg ❤

Jam has jumped much scarier ditches before. It is a perfect example of how the rider's confidence influences the horse's performance. When you feel better, Jam will perform better. Stay with it. You have persevered thus far and it will get better. You are doing a fabulous job and everyone backslides sometimes. Tell yourself it's ok and you are ok. And you will be.

Thanks for posting the bad days as well as the good! This is me 90% of the time I jump, which is such a shame when jumping has always been what I love and what has kept me in the sport. It’s nice to know we all have the same issues from time to time, and we’re often just being too harsh on ourselves / putting way too much pressure on! X

This exact scenario happened to me last week in my jumping lesson. My trainer had me doing a war cry before the jump I was stuck on… 😂 but we are a little more unhinged over here in Nebraska (USA). As someone with OCD, moments like that can be crippling for me in many ways and thankfully like Simon my trainer gets me through them. Please stop being so hard on yourself, seeing these scenarios happening to other riders IS SO HELPFUL FOR ALL OF US. It’s not just you, it’s not just me, heck it’s even the pros! YOU ARE DOING GREAT.

Meg, I’m not even half way through the video, Jammy has just refused the ditch and lovely Simon is making you do it again & again. All I can think of is you last year with Lucinda and how this would’ve totally thrown you for a loop. I feel incredibly proud of you, & Jammy for not crumbling & keeping going even though the whole fibre of your being was wanting to crumble! Well done Meg, your fantastic xxxx p.s just wanted to send a hug to you & say we all have self doubt days, I’m 47 & have them on a daily basis. Just remember, you’re awesome, Jammy is awesome & you CAN do it ❤ p.p.s Simon is also awesome! P.p.p.s! Could king kenny set up some x country jumps in one of your paddocks at home? Just to practice on????

I gave up riding after loosing my mare and having a bad fall off my friends horse and I convinced myself I couldn’t ride anymore unless I was riding my girl. Part of me just feels guilty getting on something else but in April it’s 3 years since I’ve lost her and I’m going to try a new pony to ride at the end of the week because I’ve realised I’ve completely lost part of myself. I’m not putting any pressure on it but I’m trying and that’s what matters. You’re trying so hard and doing so well! Don’t pressure yourself. If you’ve got to just canter round for a bit to just get yourself back into having fun then so be it. Nobody got hurt nobody died you’re okay. You’ll always be okay. Sending lots of love ❤ well done

I am doing my first event in a couple of weeks and this was so helpful in the mental preparation. And you're so right, it always feels so much worse in the moment, and then as soon as you are on your way home, you kick yourself for doubting yourself so much - it's very relatable.

Well there is some good news at least it happened with Simon and not mid competition. You are in a sport that is natural to be unsure of yourself because being over confident is also dangerous for horse and rider. It is about developing coping mechanisms so that you can still enjoy the ride. The other positive is your ability to analyse it and put it back into perspective. So well done you.

It takes so little to rattle us. I sometimes have lessons where I feel like I’m off balance the whole time and go backward but actually when I’m feeling off balance I’m working harder to stay in the saddle and I am learning and moving forward. This looked fine. Love how real you are with how you’re feeling when you ride.
