Introducing the all new 1955 Desoto! First time for tubeless tires... Which Ford claimed was a horrible safety hazard :) The Forward Look first cars..

I REMEMBER when the dealers windows were covered in brown paper until the announced introduction of the new models - I've seen crowds 3-4 deep waiting on the sidewalk for the paper to be removed and the doors opened.

Excelent cars in 55, 56 Chrysler too. Out west in the mtn states and no traffic we ran them 90 to 100 all day.

In 1964, I owned a brand new Dodge Dart. I T-boned a 1955 DeSoto. I dented the right front door. The door still opened and closed. The Dart needed a new bumper, headlights, grille, radiator, fan, water pump, hood and left front quarter panel.

No comparison between 64 and 55! Although 64s were nice cars, too.

It's amazing how variable speed windshield wipers are not available today--and it'd be great to have.
@autochronicles8667 Жыл бұрын
i think the variable electronics tend to cause heat/corrode and its suspect...

Also in my 1991 Park Avenue and 2003 Rodeo Sport. I dare say there's not a car being built that doesn't have this feature.@@TheDejael

Betty Grable and her husband Harry James were in a 1955 car commercial for the new 55 DeSoto, Groucho Marks was in the back seat. Marilyn was not there, she only rode in Cadillacs

DeSoto won’t have a frame in a few years. The body will be integrated with the frame.

I REMEMBER the dealership's windows being covered with brown paper until the announcement date, and different makes were introduced on different dates... That's when automakers had something to show - not the bland, generic 'car' being offered today.

Yeah definitely there was more excitement about vehicles back in the day... They are simply appliances now mostly.

Desotos were pretty cool cars, and right up there in prestige... at a higher level than Buick actually just slightly

I had no idea “shot their wad” went that far back. Or that it wasn’t vulgar.
@autochronicles8667 Жыл бұрын
hah yeah shooting wad was not vulgar back then :) The wad was from rifle shooting... when you shot a blank wad... they did use some old time slag a bit in this one

I'll take 2 55 DeSotos: A wagon and a convertible. Notice the car in the showroom was stick shift. Not many were made that way. I've seen only 1 in my lifetime.
@autochronicles8667 Жыл бұрын
they are super rare beasts... I've seen a few... but 50's mopars are always rare... people didn't value them until just recently.

Bill Kennedy and Joe Walker got chewed out in the back room because they didn’t sell enough new Desotos. Kennedy stormed off the job and Walker got so mad he stunk up the toilet. Then using extra paper he stopped up the bowl causing it to overflow into the sales floor. The owner ushered Joe out of the building. Because he lost his job his demonstrator car was taken away from him and he had to stand at the bus stop for 50 minutes in a cold driving rain.

@@autochronicles8667 The last Desoto orders were filled with 1961 Chrysler Windsors, which had become the mid-level model with the introduction of the Newport.
