Always fascinating how Horus sought not to merely ride the storm, but place reins, halter, and saddle upon it. One wonders how close he came to success, or if he was the one being bound all along. Excellent work as always, Vox.

Horus deluded himself into believing he was in control, he only realized the truth moments before the Emperor destroyed him in both body and soul. There’s a reason Abaddon doesn’t play the same game his father did, he knows there is no hope for maintaining control once you’ve taken the patronage of the gods.

For those who haven’t read “Slaves to Darkness” it’s offers amazing insight. After being wounded by Russ, Horus is more or less in a coma. But his soul is essentially in all the realms of chaos not just trying to subjugate the gods but conquer them. This part of Horus is killed/banished and all that’s left is the warmaster.

This why chaos is so interestingly written. It’s so subtle until the breaking point is reached like with Horus here. Then it’s just fanning the flames of his ambition to save humanity. Had he won, he probably would have turned on chaos too, once the veil was lifted and it became clear it wasn’t the right way for achieving his desires. And doomed humanity as predicted by the Cabal. A very tragic character. The Darth Vader of Warhammer.

Very well done, Vox. I really love the little snippets that we get here of Horus acknowledging he is using Angron, but that he also understands what Angron is that he has become a weapon that can only be pointed at something and not controlled. Plus the parts about Sanguinis, "the things I know about Sanguinis" line implying he knows the dark side of Sang and has seen it, and knows where it came(stolen) from. Also Horus knows that Sanguinis can see it all and chooses not to try and fight fate or bends things to his will that he knows can not be. Horus acknowledges thats one of the reasons Sang is better than all of them.

I hear a man talking himself into the fire of damnation. He fears Sanguinius because his brother sees through him. For all his power his is truly impotent against what he tempts to wield and he knows it. His hatred of his Father is an internal struggle that manifests through his rebellion. He knows he Is a tool. His Father told him so. The tool is Never greater than the hand that wields it. His Doom was complete the minute he understood his Father. Forever is he tied to his fate. Making Horus tragic and hateful in the same sentence. Brilliant and beautiful.😅

The Horus Heresy was the war that destroyed any hope that the Imperium had to any peace and the very future of mankind, and Horus was the monster that will forever haunt the dreams and nightmares of every man, woman, and child for the next ten thousand years. It was his ambitions and desires that will set the Galaxy aflame, and watch it burn to the ground, but even in this bloody chapter of mankind there is still the will for humanity to survive against the coming darkness.

Oooo...I really enjoyed this one. I've rather missed you making slower, somber, more introspective works, like Choices and Rust. I can imagine this taking place while the events of Cry Havoc are transpiring - the Warmaster brooding aboard the Vengeful Spirit while down below on Istvaan 3 the 'embers' that are Angron and Verus face off against each other...another excellent narration; thank you
