Isn’t it the case we should always stay true to ourselves? Which means that we ought to know who we are, and organize our lives in ways that are compatible with our personalities?
When we look for a partner, for example, we look for someone that we’re compatible with, and in regards to education and work, we need to do something that fits our characteristics.
However, "not knowing who we are" seems to be a problem. But luckily, this problem can be solved by taking a personality test, by talking to a counselor, or perhaps by going on a long solo-trip around the world to (quote on quote) “find ourselves”. Because, after all, our true selves lie somewhere hidden deep within.
Right?
Well, according to Michael Puett, Harvard professor of Chinese History and author of the book The Path, this way of thinking is extremely limited and even dangerous when it comes to how we live our lives.
The Path (affiliate link): amzn.to/3mRmF0f
In Chinese philosophy, there’s no fixed ‘self’ the way we see it in the Western world. Who we are, and what we could become is much more tangible, than a fixed set of characteristics that define a personality.
This Eastern ‘self’ is always evolving, changing, losing, and gaining, and isn’t so much defined by what’s within, but by what we do. So, it cannot be found, but it can be cultivated.
Self-cultivation is a psychological process that’s part of the ancient Chinese system of thought called Confucianism. Its founder, Confucius, firmly believed in the power of ritual, and how it can make our lives better.
This video explores the art of becoming better, based on the teachings of Confucius.

A disclaimer: the intention of this video is not to support certain governments or indoctrination of any kind. It simply intends to highlight the effects that ritual can have, and how we can harness this power to improve ourselves. I'm aware that this idea goes against the usual undercurrent of this channel with common themes like acceptance and non-conformity. I'm pretty sure the idea of self-cultivation as presented here will be regarded as 'too simplistic' by mental health professionals. Nevertheless, I think this idea is interesting and I want to keep an open mind (which is what this channel does: exploring ideas). Also, this video is not against counselors and personality tests (au contraire): it reflects on how some people tend to cling to their 'personality types'. Thank you.

Yeah you were treading a fine line there. The individual motivation determines indoctrination vs self cultivation. Also "faking it", can lead to "breaking it". Most human behavior in any given day is strictly a ritualizatiom -- that's why people find it hard to change bad habits. It's not so much the thing, it's the attachment to the ritual. The brain is lazy, it wants to do what it has done before.

There's no "finding yourself", it's only creating yourself and adapt to different roles, mainly work roles. You alone are responsible for who you wish to be and who you do not wish to be, and then manifest that being in the world. This is critical because if you don't define yourself, society will and it will put you into a box/role that they feel is the most appropriate. At that point, you have lost all power over who you are so never fall into that trap. People will always tell you "who you are" but this is not to be taken seriously, as you should just be everything to everyone while focusing on your main role and path in life. At the end of the day, nobody cares what you do so just do whatever you want and don't feel pressured by anyone else and what they are doing. That means that you should also avoid social media like the plague, as it's pure poison and will only make you depressed when comparing yourself to other's "perfect lifestyle" which is of course only a very small portion of their otherwise miserable life like most people. My advice is to focus on your core, strengths, and values and try to find work that is most relatable to those. You have some particular interests, something that you are drawn to, perhaps even a talent that the world needs. If so, it's your duty in life to fulfill those needs. Be all you can be and never be afraid to experiment with yourself and those around you. Remember that life is short so don't waste it on things and people that you don't like.

Taking personality tests to know who we are may turn into a short cut that makes us complacent. “Ah, so the test says this is who I am and so now I can behave this way.” Instead, if we are aware of our actions and thoughts and open to change and adapting, we truly learn who we are. Nowadays it's not conscious to people in the western world, that we lost most of our "social cement". Individualism has erased the ritual gatherings we used to have throughout the yearthousands, few peaces left here and there like the celebrating of midsummer fex. Celebrating the different seasons give us grounding as human beings remembering our connectedness to Nature. We cannot all like flootball games that much !🌱

My cat never works on trying to change herself and she is very happy and content. I have found that trying to change oneself inherent a feeling of self-rejection of who one is. And if one rejects who one is and "what" one is; that feeling brings about negative feelings that projects in one's personality... it prohibits self-love and acceptance. I have found that once one accepts one's self as is; improvements start to show naturally because at that point one isnt working against one's self but from one's self... going with the flow of natural self-expression. .. which could be expressed through rituals ... which becomes a natural manifestation of the self... like my cat sitting at the window every night before she goes to bed. Of course one can improve in natural skills and abilities... but then such things aren't the self. My cat worked to improve her skills but not herself. She doesn't think that there is anything amiss about her (a wise perception) In other words.... YOU are FINE but if you like; you can improve on your skills. Thanks for the video... food for thought. Enjoy your day 😊💖

I agree that rituals and behavior change is the key to changing yourself. Some changes I've made are becoming an early riser to have time for myself, cutting out junk and eating only healthy food, exercising daily, journaling every night and etc... These rituals have made me feel more happy and at peace with life! ♥️😌

Thank you for this video. I’m at an extremely rough time in my life where I’m about to sit my final exams for collage. I feel lonely, abandoned, isolated. Hence why I’ve adapted this “asshole” like mentality, which I realise is getting me nowhere, and leading to me feeling more lonely. This video couldn’t have been recommended at a better time.

I've an introverted personality.it's my personal experience that most of the people misunderstood introvert people as they're rude or egoistic person etc so you're saying that we should change ourselves and try to become more people's person(in my case).I'd tried that to become a extrovert person but in that process i didn't become extroverted person but i start loosing myself also and i didn't like that so I've decided not to change myself anymore. Be who you are.

This who you are isn't something we were born with it's a series of experiences from our childhood outside of our control that shaped the personality of the people we are to day. So if I care too much what others think, low self-esteem or I fear being criticized by people which makes me rather prefer staying alone than interracting with other people, it is safe sure but with time it'll become a burden which might to serious problems both mental and physical. Hastag an ex introvert i guess xd

@orianeo6947 3 жыл бұрын
@@rightcliquegod7653 I agree with you that a lot of our personality is shaped by experience, if not most of it. But I do think we are born with certain traits that influence how these experiences shape us. For example someone might be born as a rather sensitive person, and later in life, based on how that sensitivity was nurtured, the person will turn out one way or another. If this persons sensitivity was nurtured and encouraged by their environment, they could perhaps turn out to become a great artist. But if they had to repress that sensitivity because their parents saw sensitivity as weakness, that person might not turn to out a great artist at all. But rather someone bitter, or even aggressive from having had to repress this part of them all of their life. So you turn out with 2 completely different people because of nurture, even though they were born with the same trait.

I scrolled past this video twice today, both times reading the title as ‘becoming bitter’ and then having to scroll back to confirm what I thought I saw. The actual video was much more insightful! For a while now, I’ve noticed similar patterns in my life that I’ve just chalked up to me being who I am while simultaneously getting frustrated that I am unable to change. My issue has always been talking to people and making connections. I never really did anything about it because I’d talk myself out of social situations often without realising it. I definitely agree with the ‘fake it till you make it’ approach though and have been employing something similar in my life recently to overcome this issue. Sometimes just pretending you’re at least a little bit more confident than you feel can make all the difference.

When Stanislavski was building his "system", a way of teaching actors on how to develop characters, he found that although some characters are to be developed from the inward out, ie. built upon the psychology of the character, scenes and emotions can often times be made authentic through repeated action. If you constantly are doing what an angry person would be doing: throwing objects, shouting, cursing at everything, frowning; soon you will find yourself to be angry, even thou you started doing those actions with no internal emotion. Similarly if you laugh and smile artificially long enough soon you find yourself to be genuinely happy. Funnily enough in the 21st century through neuroscience we have found out that our brains are constantly reading our faces to try and decide what emotion we should be feeling. The reflex of smiling is faster than our inner conscious so just doing the act of smiling can lead our brains into thinking that we should feel happiness.

I threw away pride, and most of my worries left with it. I became free from the thoughts of others and happiness filled the void. I sold all my extra vehicles and traded up for a smaller home. Now I am not owned by my possessions and free time and money piled up faster than I could use it. Peace and security now own my doorway. I now live surrounded by comfort and simplicity........

Einzelganger, you have hit the head of the nail once again, right through my thick ass skull. I’ve been needing to adopt new rituals since intravenous drug use carries its own rituals. In reality, we have these rituals regardless of intent, because we are creatures of habit. Be it morning coffee/evening tea and reflection/planning (stoic) or fixing a rig. Or planning our wardrobe to look like a soccer mom despite our extra curricular activities. Thanks for being part of the grounding experience I have held onto during the last year or so. I hope you will be here in this new state of “attempting to flourish”.

A few years back I had a few morning rituals that helped me to through a stressful job. Then I quit the job, eventually, and now I don't "need" the rituals, and started to forget them. But I surely miss them. Not only I miss those rituals, I miss the bit if order my day to day life had, even if my life is much better now. Still not sure how to restart a ritualistic routine in my current moment, tough. Yeah, rituals are important. Great video. Something else: this discrepancy in beliefs, this way of seeing ourselves as something concrete and immutable... I agree, its deeply problematic. Not to mention the connection to misused concepts like "souls", in recent years I consider that it revealed even worse facets, like people who would go under deep surgery or heavy hormonal treatments to forcefully change one's body into something that the person thinks "it is" inside.

Another great video. Thank you. I totally agree with what you are saying here. When I was a professional musician I was just that. Nothing else would distract me with the task in hand. The gigs dried up and it became harder to find a band as the music business, as we knew it at that time, emploded. Now I have taken up Ki Gong and started to teach it. I have been building on my skill set now and am now producing educational webinars and also running a You Tube channel (and this isn't a plug by the way) to help me talk about my new found knowledge. I have been taught through the Tao philosophy from Korea, which originates in Sundo. It seems that the conciusions from all the Asian Eastern countries are much the same in many of there creeds and rituals. Knowwledge is a facinating journey and I look forward to your videos. Thank you for sharing. :)

Being labelled as something makes you feel like you have an identity and having an identity allows you to feel special. Filling a role or purpose for society. Not until you realize the person who labelled you consciously or subconsciously has already manipulated you. I believe that cultivation is awareness of something or self then doing something about it. Depends on what fits right to your void or "label"
