Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): einzelganger.co/innerpeace
The Kindle version will be available for $0.99 until April 21st!
Hermits, regardless of why they’ve chosen their lifestyles, may have closed themselves off from one world; they’ve gained another: a world that’s potentially much deeper and fulfilling. It’s no surprise that hermits have appeared in many cultures in human history. Another example are the Christian desert mothers like Syncletica of Alexandria who abandoned the city and spent the rest of her life in a crypt. Or Hindu philosopher Ramana Maharshi who meditated for many years at a temple, and Rabbi Yosef Yozel Horowitz who spent years of his life in seclusion.
But even though a stronger connection with God and the prospect of enlightenment are the grounds on which these hermits secluded themselves; there’s also a more mundane reason why spending time alone can be beneficial: it’s an opportunity for self-transformation.
Being alone can be a transformative experience if we utilize it correctly; which is backed up by numerous accounts in the field of psychology (see links in the description) as well as philosophy and spiritual teachings like Buddhism.
Now, this video doesn’t recommend becoming a hermit nor socially isolated in ways that are unhealthy and destructive, or gives any ‘advice’ for that matter. Solitude is a tool, which can be used for good and bad, in moderation and excess, and this video explores the benefits that solitude can have. The information presented to you is mainly based on the author’s reasoning and observations, supported by different sources. Video: How to transform yourself in solitude, and useful ways to spend time alone.

@@withinmypower9999 How what ? please elaborate. Those are quotes from Lao and Sun Tzu and the Oracle of Delphi, may I suggest that you read "The art of war" and look in to Greek history "Know thy self" (in Latin: Nosce te ipsum) is one of the Delphic maxims and was the first of three maxims inscribed in the pronaos (forecourt) of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. But if you want to interpret on it, lets try a bit, by knowing yourself in and out, you will know what you stand for and can stay true to yourself etc. other people will have a hard time persuade you, to do things that is`t in your best interest, like most advertising is designed to do, or stray from your path, as you will have one since your know yourself and what you want, you will not be a pawn in the hands of others with a stronger will power, but be the master of yourself, by knowing yourself you will know your own strengths and weaknesses and therfor is able to work on your weaknesses and use your strenghts to it fullest, you will know your limitations and that will enable you to stay humble and know that you don´t know it all and that will allowe you to learn. I broke up with my gf of 15 years and moved out of our house one month before the pandemic hit. I spent most of the last year alone, for the first time in my life. It was hard at first, but now I haven't felt better in years. I made a lot of changes to my life and habits, I'm working through my issues and anxiety, I grew a lot and really got to know myself. It's like my mind is clearer and more focused. And more importantly I found out I don't NEED anyone in my life, there's just a few people that I WANT in my life. I spent too much time and energy worrying about what people thinks of me when I'm completely fine on my own.

As a guy who was a bachelor for 20 years after high school, I think I can speak on this topic. Being content to be by yourself means being classified by your family, friends, associates as a loser and a loner. They don't care to hear that you enjoy your own company and love yourself. They want to hear that you want a big wedding followed by lots of kids they can play with. When you don't fulfill their expectations, you will only get their total disgust.

It's not just you, brother. This is a very typical Indian thing you hear from relatives, and it's even worse for girls because we have a 'biological clock' and 'need to have kids while we still can because women are only worth something when they are wives or mothers'. While I admit that having a biological limit to having children is a harsh reality for many, but it is not the only fulfillment in life, is it? Many may not want children or families, and I think as a society we should accept such individuals as well.

I had trouble with depression 2 years prior. At some point I basically cut contact to 95% of my contacts, went regularly on long walks alone without my cellphone. I did this for half a year, in which i realized that i was not pursuing my own goals in life and was overly hung up with what others might think about me (as I always felt like the odd one out, as some see me as a weirdo). I am now heading in a way different direction and am way happier. I've always was okay with being alone from time to time, but the in few years before my depressive state, i was constantly with other people, as i was a quite prominent student at my university department. Now i am confident that spending time alone is probably one of the most important aspects of a happy life, for me.

As someone who usually isolate myself whenever I feel the desire so, I also would like to bring up that interaction is also a necessity for self-seaching as much as isolation. When you're alone you do have a better chance to know yourself - but to know yourself alone may not be your whole self, since being alone denies you of everything else that's also you when accompanied. It is crucial to be at easy with being alone, but we can't deny that when we're close to people, we're also given the chance of being ourselves, and human interaction bring some exclusive experiences which you can't achiev alone. I see isolation as the place where I go to synthetize all the new information and stimulus I received interacting with the world and myself

Awesome Comment. I agree. There has to be in my opinion a mirroring soul. Someone preferably a therapist who has knowledge of trauma by going through it his/ her self and healed it within themselves. Being alone can bring up things from early on which have to be processed, validated, felt to integrate. It's extremely difficult to sift through this with a fragmented self.

After a sixteen year marriage which I often felt lonely, even around friends, I dated for years but learned to enjoy my own company more. It’s nice to touch base with familiar faces from my home town but since the plandemic, I feel like it’s a lot of effort. You can have meaningful interactions with people online and since the experimental vaccines, there is a community of like minded individuals that can share their experiences in forums or via vlogs like these. Staying away from mainstream living has effectively saved me from being a candidate. I made an informed decision using my own inner compass, not herd mentality or coerced by employer as I’m self employed. If a situation ever arose where we all had to help each other, I believe the “hermits” would be better at organising etc as we’d see more clearly through the chaos. Peace to anyone reading this ❤😊

Oh man, the part about hanging out with people that we don't really like to not feel alone... I did exactly that with a group of "friends" who ended up betraying me when going through a tough time. Solitude is very different from loneliness. Many people are surrounded by others yet feel very lonely. That is why when people suicide many will say, they seemed happy, there were no red flags. There were red flags, but people just assume that because the person doesn’t show outward appearance of sadness doesn’t mean they are battling struggles within.

Yes, particularly people who don't have an understanding of depression. Perhaps they see things in more black and white terms - 'this person's OK because they are laughing.' For some people, ignorance is bliss, they cannot cope with it. Some people lack the ability to read between the lines aswell. And some people just want to leave interactions feeling better about themselves, or at least not feeling worse. . I feel like I'm saying everything and nothing here really!

I have been using iv drugs for about 2.5 years. Also homeless and then in an institution for the last 3 months, so I have some catching up to do on this channel. The last 3 months have given me a new perspective of solitude. You replied to an email of mine in January of 2020, before the pandemic and not even 1 year into my relapse. It was more meaningful than I can express. Even 4 months later I was still important enough to get some of your time. I copied down what you said, and soon I will be able to implement the ideas to create a new family. However, this video reminds me that I need to become more comfortable being alone. Still. I have realized that I have/had more people in my life (healthy ones) than I originally thought. Consumed with memories of the ones who left, the ones who stayed suffered. I suffered and prayed for death because of the abandonment of a shit load of assholes. I intend to face the demons I refused to in 2005 when I originally got clean. I intend to become my own best friend. Starting right now, I will look at the thoughts and emotions I sought to escape. I have known this on an intellectual level, but it feels easier today than it did yesterday. Thank you for being a part of my recovery.

I know alot of people agree that solitude gives way to self improvement or healing. But that's not always the case (Imo). I'm introverted for the most part and have been single for most of my life since I deal with depression and and anxiety. I realised that not everybody can be secluded by themselves, I don't like being surrounded by noisy people yet I still look for that one person who will enjoy and appreciate quiet moments and being away from people every once in a while. I'm the kind of person who has grown up being the qiuet, reflective one surrounded by alot of judgemental and uncomfortably loud people yet I still depend on some social attention (specifically from certain type of people) in order to know what my positives and negatives are by comparing those certain people's opinions on me with my own. I guess I subconsciously look for approval from certain people, This my way of growth and maturity.

It is rather about the paradigm itself.

But ever since I met my ex-best friend, I slowly opened up and learned to rely my happiness on other. I started focus on doing what make us or my bestie happy. I let myself be comfortable like that for a long time. But now it's all gone, and I have to be with myself again. I know I can manage this, since I used to be happy alone before. I have my pets, I have a comfortable place to live, I speak to my children regularly (they live elsewhere as adults) and I get what I need delivered. I'm happier now than I have ever been. I can love as I like, wear what I like and be who I am rather than having to put on a mask and pretend to be someone I'm not for the sake of other people. I am neurodivergent and people are hard work for me so without that social interaction I am less stressed and have found peace in my life. I don't feel lonely ever. I wish I could go outside more and enjoy the world but if its a choice of going out and having to engage with people or staying in amd being quiet and peaceful I would take the latter every time

You know, the same thing can be said about "falling in love". When you're in it - you can accept lots of things, though when break-up happens, life is started being smashed, thought at the same time some new ways, new ideas can flood into one's mind. Also, for me it's hard to learn something new when I'm in love, due to that "love inebriation". In my case solitude after the break-up has given me clarity and new ways of living.

At first, loneliness seems like a curse that has been stricken upon you, but as you remain in loneliness for longer, you start to realize, much of the pain and stress in your life is due to other people coming in to your life ( He/she did this or that to me, he/she thinks that of me, etc). The most amazing gift lonely people have is PEACE. Another thing that comes along with it is the ability to discover yourself and find who you are, no one can do that but yourself, for the person to decide his or her own path in his or her life is and is always ought to be the one who can fully and truly decide their path.

I think there's a lot of material that talks about solitude as the best form of self actualization, but that doesn't point to the whole truth. We also need people, the push and pull, the grind of achieving something and measuring ourselves against yardsticks to see just how much of our growth and realisation will hold up in the day to day existence we live. I find that solitude is a thing of the mind that helps you gain understanding. But confidence and trust are built by being out there and acting out what's on your mind. If not, it's easy for anxiety to creep in.

I really envy the people who have had good experiences in isolation but I spent most of my life growing up alone. I would spend summer in my room by myself with nothing but my own thoughts to keep me company. This made me into the incredibly intelligent and introspective person I am now but it also warped my sense of reality quite incredibly. When your mind is left to wander it will come to some crazy conclusions. Ones I’ve had to learn weren’t actually “reasonable” or “logical” but simply my mind running loose and never getting corrected because I had no one to talk to. Even simple stuff like how my brother abused me. I didn’t know until I jokingly told a story and my friends all looked at me in horror and said “that’s abuse” interacting with the outside world is really integral for your development

Solitude can be beneficial but a life worth living is one in service and blessing to others. Our example is Jesus of the Christian Bible.

Solitude & silence are now far more valued & enjoyed than noisy social situations. If I had to choose one over the other it wouldn't be difficult. A balance of both is optimal.

@@qwertyki9367 social interaction sans expectations are quite easily enjoyed. To a point. Balanced with solitude. Many find solitude uncomfortable, I’m not one of them. Time alone actually seems to increase the value & quality of socializing. We’re all different & we’re all the same in thinking we’re different.

Last year I fell into depression so I iscolated myself and hid from people. At that time, I felt lonley and felt that I needed connection, and perhaps I did. But during depression I was determined to better myself and started to educate myself and learn how to be a happier in life and kinder to myself. By the end I changed drasically and for the better. Solitude really improved my outlook on life, happiness, perception, and overall changed me as a person.
