I had a set of Bong Congos. But I gave them away. They just sat in my house. I was given a Djembe and just let it sit. After watching one of your videos I realized Paula you have that drum. I have been using them in my videos. I rehearse every week to get better. Thank you very much.

Thank you Kalani this video is very informative. I’ve had a set of congas for years now but have not had much playing time or practice time. I have a smaller djembe same story as the congas. I also have a darbuka. I’m looking forward to using your KZfaq channel to learn how to play the instruments I have better. Thank you for doing what you are doing.

Just watched your video. Very informative. I have a 12” PA meinl Conga I got on sale for $200 bucks. After listening to you: me pasó como el burro que tocó la flauta. I got the right instrument to begin slapping my first basic lessons. Gracias. I’ll look for some of your tutorials for beginners. Cool beans:)

Playing a regular drumset for 50 years now (and some 50+ common and exotic instruments) I decided to expand my possibilities further, so as an older guy I could do some advanced looping and recording and maybe use the instruments in an acoustic band. So I got a cajon, djembe, tabla, congas, and bongos. Well. 😁 Now I could write a series of books or do a 100 videos… 😝 My previous drumming experiences helped a little, but honestly not much. I finally managed to get something recordable out of the tablas, but that didn‘t help much with the congas. When I finally got a decent slap on the congas (the slap sound takes up the most practicing time), there was nothing I could have transferred to the bongos, even though they look very similar and I even use them together in a set today. To make a long story short: From what I experienced with the hand drums, it always pays to not try to transfer prior knowledge from other instruments to new instruments all by yourself or just KZfaq counseling. Get a good teacher, like Kalani, and learn the basics for that individual instrument from him or her, even if you think that you already have enough experience. You don‘t, believe me. 😁 Once you‘ve established a more or less flawless and solid basis on an instrument, you need to define a reachable goal. With that you will see how miraculously the real fun part of playing that new instrument sets in. 🙂

Cajon for kick and snare sounds + Djembe for everything else. You can actually stick a bass drum pedal onto cajons which I don't think you mentioned. Djembe and Cajon combo ftw (I also got to rehead my bongos for tom sounds).

I've just bought 2nd hand Meinl bongos, waiting for them to arrive. I have never owned bongos before. I bought 2nd hand so then I could buy good quality brand for less money. I assumed they would also sound "worn in". Is that a thing? Like wearing in a pair of shoes? I don't know, I guessed.
