You could easily used a optocoupler for that purpose. But nice job anyway

Robin Gerritsen thank you! Yeah, somebody on Reddit mentioned them, and indeed they seem perfect for this job. I'll definitely try them on another similar project I have in mind.

I have that same NodeMCU ESP8266. I paused on your connection settings to the board and you forgot to change the upload speed from 9600 to 115200. You could also look at the Wemos D1Mini, they're stupid cheap and easy to use, you just need to solder your own header pins on.

You know what? I just checked my Arduino IDE, and yup. 9600. Somehow it never even occurred to me to check the baud rate (live and learn. Lol). I just looked at the Wemos, they'd be perfect for this and another project I'm thinking because they don't really need that many pins. Thanks so much!

No problem! I went through all that same frustration but didn't have the pi to fall back on, so I just found nearly all the things not to do before getting that part right. I just setup my first wemos project a few weeks ago, I'll get more of them for sure.

Nicely done! You should upload a tutorial on Hackster.io!
