I’ve been interested in doing something similar. Have you even considered just having a screenless framework. Essentially just having the bottom with keyboard and battery already. Kinda like the new space top “ar” laptop
@noisycarlos23 күн бұрын
Actually yeah, that was the original idea! But when I got the components without the screen, I realized that if the Framework mainboard doesn't detect a screen it assumes it's connected to power in 'desktop mode' (like with the cooler master case). That means it doesn't do any of the battery optimizations which means the battery dies in a couple of hours.

tldr: I'd love to choose a non framework screen for gaming. It doesn't look possible but can you clarify? And I'm also waiting for the height adjust version you talked about. I've done a lot of research on modding a 'laptop' to meet my needs more. This seems like the perhaps the coolest option, but I think I would wait for it to be height adjustable (which you said you are working on) and have one other reservation. This is close there are three main things I want. more monitor height, and portability, but also I'm hoping to choose my own screen/panel. I hear the framework screen is pretty smeary for gaming. I would love a way to use a VESA mountable portable monitor that screw in or some kind of clamp. When I have checked in the past there aren't many panels compatible with the frame work internal I think it's called edp connection. So I was thinking of going with a solution that works with one type c cable. The way the frame you made is it constrained to only being able to attach and balance the framework 3:2 13 inch panel? (I'd love to be able to choose a monitor of a slightly different size/aspect ratio. to have more portable gaming screens available. I think portable monitors cap at 17 inches I wouldn't expect or want to put on a desktop monitor. I think if the adjustable stand goes high enough for good posture with my torso, and the ability to put in my own screen I would surely be sold on it. This height might be hard to hit but the center of my desktop monitor is 20 inches high. Some other things I've also been looking at are sjpproducts Unimount that one looks like it should work with a whole framework laptop . I really like the magnetic thing for a usb hub that solves a problem of something else I was looking at, the new minifourm tablet that is high performance and refresh rate, but there is a problem usb hubs dangling down and a lack of ports. Also that tablet is a 2 in one that comes with a keyboard that might be useless unless I could find a way to wire it up.

If you can make that screen a touchscreen, it would work great as a tablet too! super cool, bookmarking for when I get a framework in the future
@noisycarlos27 күн бұрын
Agreed, that'd be nice! Unfortunately for now, it'd have to be a third-party one, as Framework doesn't make one, and I wanted to get all-framework parts But I might look into it in the future. On the bright side If Framework releases a touchscreen compatible with the FW13, it should be compatible with this one as well.

@noisycarlosАй бұрын
It doesn't, it uses the Framework screen, which does not have touchscreen support. If they release one compatible with the FW13, it should be able to work on this though.

I've had a Windows Surface and an ROG Z13 for programming, but also to take it as a sketchbook into a meeting with UI designers and hand it around. Some un-laptoppy workflows are possible when you change the form factor. Really like what you did with the airplane hanger design, with other tablet-like PCs they just fall onto the top of your hands in turbulences! Since you mentioned a version 2, here are some more ideas, basically just more standard hardware connectors ;) - Vesa mount connected to structural frame - hangers not built in, but as an addon to attach with standard screws (more easy for people to customise attachments) - ... that way it would be easy to attach a custom pen-holder, hangers including speakers, soft lights, usb cameras... all in the device orientations someone prefers - screw holes in the front or back to mount hinges or other ways of customizing the form factor - a carbon sheet as the central structural frame maybe? 😍 the acrylic cover looks great, but it doesnt transport heat that well Really nice project!

How much do you have to worry about damaging the screen when bringing it places? Considering this kind of setup myself, since I always use my bluetooth keyboard.
@noisycarlos2 ай бұрын
Not that much, since it always travels in the laptop compartment of my backpack or bike basket. I'm sure a laptop sleeve would work just as well. Though, I'd probably get one designed for a 15" laptop due to the thickness

Nice it has no crumple zones. Might as well drive a 52 Buick. It can be "recharged" in 5 minutes, it runs, easier to get serviced than a Tesla, costs half as much and you get all the benefits of Tesla's no-crumple technology. 😂

This is such a great project, also framework in generally seems really interesting. That stand gives me anxiety just looking at it though, but I do like the hanging option.
@noisycarlos2 ай бұрын
Thank you! And yeah, the stand has been the part that's had the most iterations. It's a delicate balance between portability and stability. I've made improvements since recording the video though, including adding a steel insert to the base that weighs it down considerably, and makes the connection with the aluminum neck stronger. That said, the one in the video is not as bad as it looks. The only time if tipped over was when I was filming the intro of this video in the park. But it was so windy that when I went to catch the computer, the wind tipped over my camera, tripod and everything, into the ground.

This is inspiring, I've also been looking for something like this (laptop, but no keyboard in order to use my own, and with a more ergonomically-placed monitor) for some time. What is the battery life like, in your experience? Finally, good job with the chassis, but I'll be honest: the stand looks not only unstable, as another comment said, but also flimsy, maybe you should work on a sturdier version of that.
@user-yy9pj6ec7n2 ай бұрын
To add a constructive part to my criticism, I'll share the basic idea I had in mind when thinking about a similar device: start from the geometry of an iPad + SmartFolio ( = the iconic iPad case), make it the size of a laptop monitor, and mount the chassis on a slide on this smartfolio-like case, so that the monitor can be elevated (hopefully at an adjustable height). Even this looks unstable to me, because the chassis contains most of the weight, and you'd be elevating that weight at an angle, but at least this configuration would come with some geometric integrity

Tried this with the Real. Motion sickness nightmare on the plane cause the glasses don’t fit securely on your head.
@noisycarlos3 ай бұрын
Huh, I didn't run into that issue. However, I get motion sickness easily so I take motion sickness pills before every flight anyway. By default the screen stays locked in place, which is what i use on land (if the screen is locked to my head i do get motion sickness Rather fast). That doesn't work as well in the plane when it's banking, but their 'smooth follow' mode for planes and cars worked well there.

The uses for me will be similar to a laptop, but with better ergonomics. With the screen and keyboard being independent, the screen can up to eye level and I can use my ergonomic keyboard. Plus, since it has a 'tablet' form in an airplane, it can fit on the iPad tray of the seat in front of me, so I can work on it without having to place it on the little tables (which again, is not very ergonomic). I know a MS surface or Yoga can be full computers in tablet form. But they're more expensive and slower. Plus by designing it myself I can make some mounts for my needs (I'll show them in a future video), and since it's a Framework, I'll probably be able to upgrade the hardware in the future without redesigning the whole case.
