Connecting A Microphone To The DJI Osmo Pocket

In this video, we are taking a look at the newly released microphone adapter for the DJI Osmo Pocket that allows you to use an external microphone. For the most part, the Osmo Pocket has good audio, using it outside on a windy day can be challenging and that's where being able to use a microphone with wind cover really comes in handy. In this video I go over a few different microphones that you may want to use with your DJI Osmo Pocket and a few different ways to you can attach a microphone to your DJI Osmo Pocket. This is perfect for those who want to build a vlogging rig while utilizing the stabilization capabilities that the Osmo Pocket offers.

I also own a DJI Osmo Pocket and for being an internal microphone it's pretty good, but when you start recording it in a more windy and noisy background, you'll find that DJI Osmo Pocket's internal mic really isn't feasible. I'd say that doing a sound comparison test outside and in more noisy environment would allow better distinctive comparison

Yes, I agree, windy conditions ruin sound, a VideoMicro with the Dead Cat should sound ok, or other wind baffling cover. I've seen some lavalier's that have a cover.

Outstanding. You are the first one to show options that work when the dead cat gets in the way. And I 100% agree with you that most option destroys the Pocket from being a small, easy to carry, unit. I like the Lav the best.

That's a nice audio gear. I know Gopro 7 works with only Gopro audio adapter, but can you give a test with others? DJI audio adapter in Gopro, DJI Osmo Pocket with 3rd party adapters (USB C to 3.5 mm) and so on.

I honestly think the osmo pocket internal mic sounds the best! I always quite liked it but I find as soon as you get more than a meter away from it that's when it's starting to be bad. I think the other mics will do better once you move a bit further away or move to a windier location.

Glad they are finally shipping this accessory. The Pocket is a nice camera, but videos really should have nicer sound. I'll be mounting a video Micro more likely or keeping a lav in the bag.

Thanks for posting because I was considering getting a mic but after listening and as you rightly say the difference just isn't enough in terms of quality for me to be messing around making the Oslo into something that could easily look a little silly. I do agree that the mic on the Oslo is sufficient. Great vid.

I understand that the Rode Video mics require 3v power from the camera. At least mine do. Does the Osmo Pocket put out the 3v needed to power them? I could not find any details from DJI on that.

Thank you for this informative and easily understood video. I love my dji osmo pocket but not so much the sound outside when hiking/camping. I have a few different mics but none seemed to work.......because they are all TRRS and Not TRS! Thank You!!!! An adaptor is the cheapest option at the moment 😁😁😁😁

Thank you for going through this demonstration and the pros/cons. Next time you do an audio test, can you do it without facing into a corner? That "small room" effect was detrimental to the audio quality examples.

Any idea of the Saramonic SmartMic+ UC works with the Osmo Pocket? It comes with a USB type-c connector.

Should maybe be noted that TRS is for stereo (2 channel) use - you'll find that on headphones (for the left and right audio channels) and on mics, so they record on both channels. The TRRS is a headset connection - 2 for the audio out (left and right speakers) and only one for the mic. If you ever record anything and only hear sound on the left channel, you don't have a stereo connection. ;)

question: i have a small case that has a USB C adaptor that holds my osmo pocket and creates 2 lateral USB entries. Would I be able to connect an external battery in one of the USB C entries and the Mic in the other side ? both should tech interact with the OSMO at the same time

Nice test, thanks. As you said in the beginning of the video, between the internal and external microphones is not obvious, but as you can plug a compact wireless system to this jack, some extra applications can be imagined :) What about the wireless kit ? Can you plug the audio adapter into it ? I think you can’t send audio to its USB port (this would be bulky anyway) but every option has to be tested :)

This video was really helpful. I thought the Rode VideoMicro had the best sound. I also have a powered Rode mic which I am sure will sound good, but as you said, it defeats the purpose of having a small camera. I was particularly glad to find out about the Ulanzi Cold Shoe Extension which will be the best option for me. I do not think the PolarPro Tripod Mount will be a good option for anyone with a Rode VideoMicro since it will still position it within the frame of the OP. I think it is also helpful to mention that the DJI Audio Adapter will not work with the DJI WiFi Adapter. Thanks -

hey great video man! was just waiting the whole video to see you do some shots outside, as to test some of the mics vs the wind. I have some coastal footage at my channel that unfortunately have a lot of wind noise, I can reduce it with software but it's still heavy so I want to check out a good mic for the Osmo Pocket I also noticed that you can plug in the mic at the same spot where I put my powerbank, so I cannot do filming sessions over 1.5h because of the same port usage.....

Any suggestions for a microphone that works with the DJI osmo from a distance? Most of these microphones in your video work for up to three feet or 1 meter away. I am needing something at maximum of up to 10 feet. Thanks!

Helpful video. Thank you. Helpful to know about audio options, but in my opinion if you've gotta add a phone and an external mic to the Osmo Pocket, there's just no point to the Osmo Pocket. The way I see it is that the ONLY reason to use this thing is because it's small and light. If it ceases to be small and light, then there are MUCH better options for the larger size. I think Osmo Pocket is awesome, but if I'm not happy with the built in quality, I just wouldn't use it and opt for something larger.

I've been looking for a work-around for my Osmo Pocket's faulty audio. Its been developing intermittent crackles and loud hiss, and even no audio at all. I'll eventually send it back to DJI for a possible fix, but I think getting an external mic will work for the time being since I'm on the road and overseas. Now if I can only get the DJI audio adapter from a local store here in Queensland, Australia

i see you mount a LED panel to the top shoe of this phone holder. Not sure if you know this, but would you think the "GOPRO light mod" accessory fit into that shoe? I would assume the lock is a standard type that would fit every cold shoe slot, but not 100% here..

I thought the clip-on brought the sound closer and fuller the best. The Rode video mic had good sound, but seemed a bit distant. I wanted the short little mic to work best. Its so convenient. But it didn't make much difference. Maybe a different brand or quality of that type would work better? Thanks for the helpful video!

Além desse microfone que já vem com ela, tenho como colocar lapela? Pq preciso de 2. Se tem como, qual e como você recomenda por? Pq pelo que vi os adaptadores que vem com a câmera é tipo macho, porém na lapela q quero, também são entradas macho e eu precisaria de entradas fêmeas e não encontro. Tô perdida! Tá sendo minha maior dificuldade até então por não saber também se usando o adaptador a câmera vai reconhecer... :(

When testing the VideoMicro with the adapter, did you have to increase the recorded level of the audio in post production? I found sound level was much lower with the VideoMicro than the built in mic. Thanks

Ok so it is not just me. I'm having the exact same issue. I have to use the the audio boost/level (whatever it is called in english) in the osmo pocket settings on high and also increase it in post.

I remember the original Osmo having a setting in the menu where you could adjust the microphone levels. Does the Pocket have anything like that? Also I am guessing there is no way to monitor with headphones the audio you are recording either huh?

Great video. However I still find the audio to be "artificial". Not sure I'm sold on the super expensive audio adapter. I think the preamps are not good on the osmo pocket to begin with. I think in my opinion external recording might be a better option but of course that defeats the purpose of having the osmo pocket to begin with.
