Is there a directory or "calling frequency" to listen to that would identify any local packet stations?

Would have been a good thing to include huh? packetradiomap.com includes most types on packet nodes, but isn't very updated. BPQ nodes are mapped here server2.g8bpq.net:8181/ and these are checked in real time. Although rare to find in the wild, a common packet frequency (besides APRS ) on 2m is 144.930 at 1200baud. You can listen on the APRS frequency at 144.390 for possible advertisements of packet nodes you can connect to. But they don't often lie on 144.390 itself as to not congest the APRS network. You have better luck on HF finding activity however in most cases. On 14.105 LSB, home of Network105 with a 1600/1800hz tone pair at 300baud. Or 7.109.5LSB on 40m (although not as active)

Nice video, thanks! I have used DireWolf for ages on APRS and have also played around with packet radio in the past with BBSes, etc., but it's cool to use the soundcard modem as a TNC with connection based AX.25. Thanks! George M1GEO

What are paracons graphic capabilities? I have been searching for something that can display modern bbs nodes and games like trade wars. Also thanks for your deep dives into packet radio.

I haven't explored it beyond the text. I assume it could support some text based graphics. But I'm not sure how the codes translate over AX-25 to make them appear.

Got any suggestions for finding BBS's in my area?

Now try doing that with a Commodore C64 or similar 8bit computer. G7VFY
