The Mt. Battle 100-trainer knockout challenge is an ordeal, requiring knowledge of Pokémon combat, of double battle strategies and endurance against Colosseum's lengthy fights. It is clearly too difficult for a noob like me... or is it?

I genuinely believe this and XD gave the most shits about making interesting/difficult Pokémon battles. Shadow Pokémon could have been lazy but instead they made a legit system. The game was challenging. And XD made a puzzle mode basically which is sick!

For the Agate Village walking trick, you can also unplug the controller and plug it back in while holding up on the joystick. The Gamecube always assumes the stick is in neutral when plugged in, so resting the stick back to neutral will be read as holding down.

From personal experience: you learn about Thunder's interaction with Rain by growing up during Gen 2 and playing the heck out of Pokemon Stadium 2 rental battles xD Also the "school" in Pokemon Stadium 2 is actually really great (if now outdated) for teaching battle strategy, I was really hoping something like it would be included in the new Scarlet and Violet since that is all about going to school xD

Nice thought put into that team- I usually just run with the team I used to beat the story mode. NGL Mt Battle is super easy, it's just time consuming lol. I did it on the run-up to Ultra Sun for the Ho-oh, and the worst part is just how long it takes. Especially in the early battles when all you're doing is slapping down the baby trainers with Colosseum's lack of set mode/turning off animations (a lot of which take a long time to play out).
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 8 ай бұрын
Coloseum and XD animations are amazing, but they definitely take up a lot of time which isn't conducive to grinding or just playing quickly. And most pokemon games aren't all that hard, and gen 3 AI isn't helping in this case. But Coloseum atleast trys to have interesting enemy team comp. (Although the best part is the music, especially mirror B's theme being synced to Ludicolo's dancing idle animation)

The beginning of Pokemon XD starts with a tutorial battle, and there's a lot more that you can do if you want to learn more about Gen 3 battling. It's actually pretty decent at teaching some things. Too bad a lot of the mechanics change by the very next generation.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 8 ай бұрын
Atleast most of those changes were for the better/more logical. Just the physical/special split alone is worth it. XD will remain my favorite pokemon game, and gen 3 will always have a special place in my heart, but some of those changes were incredibly necessary.

@@jasonreed7522 Oh, I'm not saying they were bad changes. I love the physical/special split! I just brought it up because Lyra had been running so long on the old mechanics and had mentioned they weren't too knowledgable about battle. XD was my second game, and BY GOD, do I love it!

@@excalibur493 i understand what you meant, if he spent a bunch of time learning gen 3 mechanics with XD then it wouldn't translate well to gen 4+ because of all the changes. (Although a lot does cary over, just use bulbapedia or smogen to check for the niche move interactions, the games barely tell you any if them) Although XD and Coloseum are fantastic tutorials for gen 3, they feel like intro to competitive pokemon before it got huge. Especially with the properly designed enemy teams, the post game Colosseums, and the side puzzles/tutorials like the battle roms in XD that give you specific situations and some of them have super niche solutions including attacking youself to get a switch while under the effects of a shadowtag.

I wish I'd known about the ball glitch back when I played Pokémon Colosseum when it originally came out. It would've saved me a few headaches trying to catch some of the later Shadow Pokémon as well as the Legendary Beasts. I still remember freaking out during the first battle with Dakim because one of his other Pokémon greatly damaged Entei with Earthquake, so I had to catch Entei as quickly as possible and I was lucky enough to get it with either my first or second Ultra Ball. Also, I don't know if you've ever played Pokémon Stadium 2, but Earl's Academy offers lessons and tutorials on the various battle mechanics of the Gen 2 games, at least one of which explicitly mentions Thunder always hitting while it's raining in battle, as well as Solar Beam bypassing the charge-up turn to immediately hit during strong sunshine, confirming that the Thunder Dance and Sunny Beam combos have existed since Pokémon Gold & Silver.

Fun fact: you technically have to do Mt Battle twice: once in Story mode for the time flute, once in Battle mode for Ho-oh with your story team. The trainers, teams, and strats are different for both runs (and even in Single or Double battles for Battle mode), and the final boss of the challenge is as well. In Story, it’s a bodybuilder modelswap named Somek or smth like that, while in Battle mode it’s either Eagun reskins Infin or Inity depending on if you challenged Singles or Doubles. While Doubles is probably the most completed version, Singles still has some decent tricks up it’s sleeve.

You are a hundred percent right about the game not telling you about how moves interact, and about that being super frustrating at times! I'm not sure if it helps at all, but I believe the reason Gamefreak included so many details like that is because Pokemon was always intended to be a social game. The idea was that people would learn, pick up, and discover certain mechanical details over time, and would share them with their friends, therefore creating a stronger community of people sharing all the truths, myths, and rumours about how exactly the games worked. You'll see this in the Regi caves for RSE - it's my personal belief that those were created as a nod to the crazy internet stories about how to get ultra rare legendary Pokemon by adopting a series of weird and arbitrary maneuvers which were typically complete timewasters. Don't get me wrong - I still think it's a pretty reasonable conclusion if you think that it's dumb and unnecessarily obfuscated. That said, if the question is 'how on earth was I supposed to know that?' I personally think the answer is you ultimately learned in the exact way you were supposed to; someone else who had played the games told you about it.

About Thunder: Isn't there a Schoolboy to the west of Ecruteak who calls you to tell you about niche move interactions like Stomp doing more damage against targets using Minimize and Thunder being 100% accurate in rain? The Phone System got a lot better in Crystal than it was in Gold/Silver. The Schoolboy you're thinking of does work that way in Crystal, but in Gold/Silver Pokégear trainers only ever do three things: they call to ask for rematches, they bore you with inane rambling about how their day is going, or a rare few of them can tell you about rare pokémon outbreaks like Dunsparce.

Congratualations on winning both Ho-oh ad, Jirachi, and getting Celebi as well. I havd Channel, so my Celdbi will come from there, but I'll have to beat the Elite Four for it first. If onlyb I could get Celebi the legit way as well.

9:19 I understand what you mean but here's some trivia... In Pokemon Stadium 2, there's a Pokemon school of some sort that you can play. There, you learn a buttload of hidden mechanics including, you guessed it, Rain Dance + Thunder combo. So, yeah, at some point, GF _did_ explain it but I understand that they didn't again since then. EDIT: Oh yeah. In that mode, you also learn the Defense Curl + Rollout combo as well. EDIT2: Maaaaaaaan... if I would have read the comments just a little bit more I would have known that I'm late to the party in saying this.

And somehow this isn't the toughest challenge Genius Sonority came up with. I want to see someone beat Pokémon Battle Revolution, Stargazer Colosseum Round 8 with only Rentals. Of course it isn't possible with the ones you start with, but after beating the game once, Gateway Colosseum becomes a Battle Factory of sorts, where after you defeat a trainer, you can trade permanently one of your Pokémon with them, and on the higher rounds this give competitive Pokémon. But Stargazer Round 8 is tough even with optimal teams, so despite having good Mons, it still is a nightmare to complete.

In hindsight the 100th Floor in Mt. Battle should've consisted of like Ho-Oh, Sunflora, Groudon, Sunflora, Latias and Sunflora then it would've been super tricky. It is interesting how Sunflora was broken as an opponent's pokemon in this challenge and not literally any other pokemon.

So I haven't bothered to look, but the detailed interactions with weather (thunder in rain, can't freeze in sun, etc.) were clearly stated in Stadium 2. I do wonder if they are mentioned in game elsewhere in books at the trainer school and such.

"I don't want to be THAT GUY who gives up on a challenge when it looks too tough." I do, or I want to be known as "THAT GUY who gives up on a challenge when it looks too tough because he has better games to enjoy than those that make him have end up evolving into Annihilape because he died from rage." ;p

Man I love this series, been having a lot of fun watching your living pokedex videos. I have one question, is it legitimate to do a gen 1 and 2 living pokedex using the remakes? Would love to try completing those games and was wondering if it was acutally legitimate, also having a living gen 1 remake living pokedex would also be a great time saver for the gen 3 livign pokedex later on wouldnt it?

Congratulations! If i may make a suggestion in case you ever decide to take on gen 3 battle frontier for fun. Use shadow ball over psychic on Metagross. In gen 3 ghost is physical which Metagross will use better than the stab

Maybe you don't know, but... in Gen 3 spread moves like Rock Slide and Surf (the ones that only hit the foe) do half of the damage in doubles, so they're very weak. Spread moves like Earthquake and Explosion, so that hit even the teammate, do 100% to everyone, so they're very strong. In the later gens, they do 75% everytime Note: Rain Dance + Surf should technically do 75% of the total in this case, so it's like a 72 base power move. It is lowered to 48 due to being a double battle (yeah) + the 50% of this number, so it will go up to 72

95 base power, *2.25 for STAB and rain, *0.5 for Gen 3 silly, you're still putting out over 100 Power

To be fair, I think one of the later games explains that Rain Dance makes Thunder always hit, but I don't remember which one (maybe Gen 6 or 7). It is silly that it was present but never explained in the early games though. Also wow, this doesn't look too bad. I was expecting something like Stadium 2 with rentals only or something.

It was almost twenty years ago since I did it, but I remember Mt. Battle not being hard, just VERY tedious. Specifically in the latter half I had to stop numerous times because it was so boring and no one could pose even a remote challenge.

I do kinda sympathize with the Thunder thing! I learned it from Pokemon Stadium 2, which had a little 'Academy' to teach you more advanced mechanics, including how some moves interact with weather. I stopped playing back in gen 3, so I dunno how I would deal with newer weird interactions...

I have such fond memories of this challenge. I beat it with a choice band Hi Jump kick Medicham and sleep powder Jumpluff 😂. As most people say the hardest part is the grind to purify and how long it takes to simply sit through 100 battles on Colosseum's slow engine

I had a relatively easy time purifying all 48 shadows. What I did was I would play through the game, then when I would have to put the game down (such as for the night or to run errands, etc) I would do the Agate walking glitch with a full team of shadows with the pokemon with the biggest heart gauge in the day care. I would also use the day care during the playthrough to purify a pokemon passively.
