Conspiracy Theories on COVID-19: Lab Leak Theory, Explained

About a year ago I made a video where we strayed away from the scientific discourse to jump into buck wild COVID-related conspiracy theories. I did that to set the record straight on a number of them.
The video was called: "COVID-19 Conspiracy Theories DEBUNKED", and in it, I’ve talked about 5G networks, David Icke, and Bill Gates too.
It was a wild video. It was so wild that I had to turn off the comments section as it went out of control.
And recently, as the so-called lab leak hypothesis got some steam again, people were pointing at it as a victory of let’s say alternative facts, over real ones.
But, science is sure about one thing. The world’s five top virologists, in a letter called, "The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2”, published their analyses which clearly show, that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct.
So in this video, I want to dive deeper into where COVID-19 came from and the credibility of the scientific community.

@@RM-yf2lu I mean, just cause some nutball is saying 5G masts will give everyone cancer, the 5G masts they build a few years later aren't proof of some supposed conspiracy. They're just 5G masts. The same way, people correctly speculating a year ago that vaccination passports would become a thing doesn't indicate anything sinister. It just means you first heard of the concept from a shady source. I bet most virologists could foresee the possibility of vaccination passports as soon as covid went global. That's not a conspiracy. That's knowledge and deductive reasoning. I realize you guys see some shadowy figures orchestrating something massive with the vaccine and/or the passports. But there are legitimate reasons for these restrictions. Even if you don't agree with those reasons, if you actually consider them unironically, I'm sure you can easily understand why they resonate with other people

I'm pretty confident that it came from a lab. Anyone who can think clearly and has common sense would choose that hypothesis over the others we current have. But yh, proof... Proof is always difficult to get.

@Grav yes I agree with the other comment on here saying that China being secretive doesn't directly equate to a theory being true. If you ever get arrested, you keep your mouth shut. Even if you are 100% innocent, you keep your mouth shut. That doesn't make you guilty. I'm not saying this lab leak theory is true or is not true. Nobody can answer that question yet and if they do answer it, it's nothing more than a gut feeling or a guess, not a concrete fact. We need to operate off of provable evidence and facts. Keep in mind that from china's point of view, this is far more than just covid. It's likely a strategic play. If they let people come into their country to investigate and they find something....that's bad. If they don't find something, that's also bad because then the next time something happens and china decides to refuse access, it will then certainty look like they are hiding something. So until there is something, there is nothing. Let's wait until the facts come out before deciding we already know what happened.

It was accidentally released by Chinese Wuhan lab. And the Chinese authorities didn't say anything about it for two to three weeks after the fact. And they also bought out the World Health Organization. The trickster May cover his tracks. But we still know he's the trickster.

Not to be the guy here but I bet that a lot of scientists would be eager to dismiss the lab leak theory taking into account that the topic of "gain of function" research is highly controversial and they could loose their funding if the theory turned out to be true. So yeah you have the conspiracy theorists on one side buy can you really be sure that there is no bias in the scientific community on this topic?

The last video he literally addresses this theory by saying "this one is plausible". He said it was unlikely given the grade 4 status BUT NEW INFORMATION CAME TO LIGHT (cannot express how important that is in coming to correct conclusions) that the lab might not have been as safe as we thought. What's the problem?

I've just can't imagine a situation where there is such an unprecedented viral outbreak from such a poorly regulated lab, with a government that has so adamantly obfuscated transparency, with so little investigation. The mere infectivity of this virus, one such that we haven't seen in over a century, with such affinity towards human lung tissue, should raise our suspicion index for the most likely and most proximal cause immediately. And what is most confusing is the sheer lack of due diligence for thorough investigation whatsoever.

This looks like it was published on 27th July at which point numerous major publications had published detailed pieces on lab leak hypothesis. He had a month++ to read any of these publications, refute points they had made or evidence they had collected, present new evidence etc but no - instead we get a video about “weaponisation”, and making out that lab leak is some sort of fringe theory being spouted by guys in their mothers basements. “Straw-manning” is an understatement

I’d say that Occam's razor is highly applicable here. The simplest answer is probably the correct one, even without the evidence. There are a lot of coincidences going on in wuhan. Not saying it was released on purpose but there is a good possibility it was accidental.

When the 2002 SARS1 outbreak occurred it took four months to determine a civet was the intermediate host between a bat and humans. When the 2012 MERS outbreak occurred it took nine months to determine a camel was the intermediate host between a bat and humans. It has been 20 months and counting for SARS2. The SARS2 genome has a 96% similarity to a bat coronvirus. What was the percentage similarity in SARS1 and MERS?

For instance, if the intermediate host were a northern short-tailed shrew, then Ft. Detrick would be a prime suspect. Which raises another question. Why did the Chinese government originally place the blame on wildlife sold in the Wuhan wet market?

@@xNaeja "From reputable sources" would actually be a good thing. 😂 Anyway, conspiracy theorists rarely bring up peer reviewed papers, and when they do they tend to extract the bits of information that can be used to support their point of view and completely ignore the rest (when not purposely misread the data). There is no way to have a debate with them, it's like debating constitutional law with a preacher from the Evangelical Right. When you corner them, they start spitting out bible verses and dogma.

@@xNaeja They really - REALLY - don't. Documentaries and private homepage are not usable sources. Not once in my life have I managed to convince a truther to send me a single peer-reviewed study that supports their alternative view. Not once. They'll pull out some old discredited goofbal ex-scientist who supports their view and say the scientific community banished him because he didn't walk the line. When really he's just a nut.

The Proximal Origin paper's authors also have multiple undisclosed conflicts of interest. Their own author was unsure about the lab generation till Feb 11. Proximal origins preprint was sent out on Feb 17. Anthony Fauci and Jeremy Farrar had convened the group of authors who eventually wrote Proximal Origin paper. Farrar and Peter Daszak were involved in the infamous Lancet letters that called the lab leak hypothesis a conspiracy theory. Daszak carried out gain of function research at WIV using NIH funding. Francis Collins is on record trying to use that paper to suppress all lab leak debate. NIH also did not disclose its ties with EcoHealth Alliance. Regardless of the origin of the virus, it is very likely that the paper was a political tool to deflect attention away from lab leak. Please don't believe what I have written here but go and look at the facts for yourself.

"SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct." My first reaction to this is to wonder why this careful language was used. If the virus mutation developed naturally in the wild or in the lab, then leaked from the lab, it's the same result.

On your conspriracy theory video you made last year you didn't really delve into the right information. The main consensus is that the government and media is blowing covid out of proportion and making it seem far worse than it actually is. With this method they try to regain their position of power they lost over the course of the century. In my country (Belgium) the government (that formed without the choosing of the population) was able to outplay the parliament with the pandemic. They were able to completely go around the division of power and make descisions without feedback or their confirmation. Furthermore, the conspiracy theorists are scared that we are slowly but surely descending into a communistic China without our knowledge. Step by step we are being tracked more and more and it will be a matter of time before the government introduces a cool new cryptocurrency which will give them even more power. There are a lot of theories around the vaccines. One is that it is a depopulation method (sure) Another one is that vaccines slowly deactivates the immune system which causes you to get linked to the vaccination train that will benefit big pharma. I believe that herd immunity through vaccinations isn't the way out of this. Instead of trying to fight the virus, we should live with the virus, which means upgrade the ICU, vaccinate the risicopatients and elderly and let the virus go it's way. Look at israel, they have their population vaccinated and through my research I concluded it almost changed nothing same with the UK, number are bouncing back and people are dying. Could you make a video about how you would have solved the pandemic?

Someone touting science as the final answer doesn't understand science at all. Science is the one intellectual endeavour that humans engage in that understands that there are no final answers and that everything is to be questioned. You would be confusing science with religion in this respect as religion is the endevour to stifle intellectual curiosity by means of dictating to others ideas that aren't suppose to be questioned.

Though usually the method is more systematic and disciplined, let us not throw out the baby with the bathwater. If not for the "conspiracy theories" and the marginal voices, we wouldn't be here asking about the lab leak as an alternative explanation. The lesson here isn't that there are lonnie conspiracy nuts out there, it is how politics and hackery invades and corrodes the search for truth. If not for Trump the lab leak hypothesis would have been taken more seriously earlier and perhaps even put to definitive rest. Instead huge swats of society, including the scientific community failed misrably at doing their job, because, whatever the Trump said we must be against. That is a gloomy prognosis for the future of sense making.

There is no such thing as „certainty“. When you make an experiment and analyse your results statistically, the results are your findings. Statistical analysis does not show you „truth“, it shows you correlation and every correlation has a certain probability to just be coincidence. If you analyse if smoking leads to cancer, 99.9 Studies will show you that smoking does cause cancer. 0.1% of analyses might say it doesn‘t. Is the 0.1% done incorrectly? No, there is just a small chance that you draw a random sample of people who smoke and do not have cancer. But the scientific consensus is that smoking does cause cancer.

The biggest problem with the "natural" theory is that not a single animal has tested positive for covid 19 BEFORE the first confirmed human case. If it had come from animals you would have seen a significant number test positive (as with SARS, MERS etc). Add on the fact that the virus was primed for human to human transmission form the start (normally when a virus jumps it is poor at human to human transmission in the early stages) and it casts serious doubt on the "natural spillover" theory.

Only to those that jumped ahead and made assumptions without evidence. The scientific community moves step by step, like a roller coaster working it's way up to the top. Every step forward is powered by research, evidences and facts. With the whole world involved in this story and no shortage of theories and conspiracies, for every one that may eventually develop meaningful supporting evidence, there are many others that go by the wayside since they didn't pan out. A gambler will play a hundred games of poker to win the jackpot but the only one they will tell you about is the winning hand, not the other 99 failures. Just saying that nothing means anything until there is proof based on verifiable evidence. If some conspiracy ends up to be true, people aren't backpedaling...they just got ahead of the evidence

The wet Market was a "super spreader" event, people already had the virus when they walked in and proceeded to give it to everyone in there. Tissue Samples where taken from all the animals in the market and not one of them had the virus, yet in almost every surface of the market there was traces of the virus. So it couldn't have come from the animals, so where did it come from? I think we all know the answer to that question.

All I see from both sides: there are people accomodating previous narrative and building on top of it, so its a trust based consensus. How can you tell if institutions are deliberately not sharing all the information? Why should I take for granted what people that are on the other side of the world tell me? How do you know what institution to trust?

If a scientist keeps on telling you things that remain to be useful, that's a good sign to accept what they say more than people who yell things out loud on Facebook.

Of course they also fail to explain how the virus was found in four countries (France, Italy, Brazil, Sweden) in the Fall of 2019. I describe in the video that there are more points for the lab leak theory then before. Nothing is claimed for now and if you watch the whole thing, then you heard me saying that this would not get confirmed for a long time.

@@Medicalfuturist I know this is an old comment but I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this. like you my first inclination was that it might be decades before we know the consequences of our actions with regards to our response to Covid. Having said that two sources I value are on either side of the lab leak theory. I try to understand the arguments but without training in the relevant sciences it's extremely difficult to determine who's position is strongest. For the record if this was a lab leak event I expect it's an accidental escape of a virus in the midst of gain of function research. With the circumstantial evidence of the type of research being undertaken in that lab and that it hasn't been traced to an animal, it seems more probable than not that the lab leak hypothesis is the stronger one. Is there any up to date information that is bending it one way or another for you?
