A basic fry screaming tutorial I put together pretty quickly. When I first learned how to do this, I didn't get much of an explanation. I picked it up by replicating the sounds that my friend showed me then practised every other day. Repetition is key but be vigilant, give yourself enough rest and don't hurt yourself! Remember, practice makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect.
Hopefully, the combination of my explanation and physically showing you the things you have to do to achieve a good vocal fry will help you. If you have any questions, leave a comment and I'll do my best to help.

I got it after 10 (yes, ten) years and I have this video to thank. It's because this video starts out from the basic sound everyone is capable of making as opposed to a halfway finished sound. Forever in your debt, Mr Callum Howle

If you only lift your diaphragm you wont have enough power. Try and blow some air out while keeping the compression and while doing the crackle

@@ConstructBand i do have a question. if im 17 and my voice isnt fully developed or matured, can i still scream? i mean i have a really deep voice but it tends to be quiet
@ConstructBand
@ConstructBand 5 жыл бұрын
@@kolbycheeze7607 Yes, of course! You can learn to do this at any age, just like singing. The pitches you're able to hit might change as your voice breaks more is all. I don't think not being able to project your voice well is anything to do with your voice developing though. Anyone at any age with any kind of voice can learn to project! You just need to practise and figure out the right technique. Power and projection all comes from your diaphragm, whether you're singing or screaming. You also need to figure out what your vocal range is and practise at pitches that are suited to you. You can figure out your range easily - just get a piano or keyboard, start somewhere comfortable and work your way up, singing along to each note. Then do the same but going down to the lower notes. The lowest note to the highest note you can hit in your chest registration (which is essentially your talking voice) is your range! Hope this helps.

Thank you so much. I've been struggling for a year with the last step from 'crackle' to actual fry scream. I find myself in the position where I can cover whole songs with just good sounding little crackles, but not yet the real thing. It sucks, but your video provided some key elements that I hadn't heard of yet and also more of an 'attitude' to this whole thing that is encouraging! Thanks a lot and the band is sick too!

Currently stucked with projection, but man has this been useful for just a couple months messing around with it. It's great how it feels to finally be in control of your diaphragm and folds compression, even to just a basic level. Been attempting false cords for years, wich might have helped me with this, but never knowing so much of whats going on in there and never feeling it to be this adecuate and safe. I wish my body interiorised things faster to start singing ASAP, but you gotta give yourself time and keep practicing. Thank you so much for this vid!

Thanks man! Yeah, fry screams aren't like super high like those gut wrenching ones that Dani Filth can do but you can get them high enough to sound good in most circumstances and they're safe. That's the great thing about them. Minimal risk of vocal damage or injury. Plus, I don't really like super high screams anyway. 😋

Not gonna bullshit man this video ACTUALLY helped me! As a teen I messed up my vocal cords in bands and at shows, not properly doing it without pain. I went the Pantera route and screamed like Phil Anselmo. I took his advice for instance… drink a lot of alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and never warm up. So I turned to beatboxing because I have a deep raspy voice from all the abuse. But I decided to give metal vocals another shot watching vids of the younger guys like yourself. A++ on this tutorial. 🤘

Great video! \m/ Been looking for ways to improve my fry sound and your explanations actually make sense to me. Most of the "properly" trained vocal coaches waste way too much time talking about anatomy, it's actually kinda useless coz I dunno what that anatomy feels like! and then they have exercises that don't make sense, like they're skipping steps in their instructions. Whereas you use non-technical methods I can actually understand :D it's like when I learned to false chord growl, I only figured it out after watching Angela Gossow tell a guy to pretend to be a big dog and do star jumps. I like dogs! I can do that haha! And I love my growls now but the limitations are starting to bug me so I'll try your tips to get my fry scream going ^_^ adding this video to my favourites :D P.S. thanks for those bookmarks!

I think a lot of vocal coaches talk about the anatomy because they don't know how to explain it in layman's terms! It's a bit of a cop out. Learning about the anatomy is definitely important but I don't consider it to be a valid method of teaching techniques. I prefer a more contemporary approach, showing people what I'm doing and explaining it with sound effects that can be imitated and will push you in the right direction. Thanks for checking out the video man!

I found this even with learning regular singing tbh! It's interesting to learn about the anatomy, but that doesn't help me work out how to sing better. I think your approach is much more practical. ^_^ I also love that you also have things in a solid step-by-step format. Thanks again for posting it, gives me something to work on while I'm between bands :D

I definitely need to try this. Been watching screaming tutorials for over 10 years and mostly for false chord screaming yet they usually say the same thing "push with your diaprham and make a sighing noise" and I never really understood it. This was actually helpful since you explained it from the beginning like groak and then pushing it there. I do have some guestions though: 1. You mentioned that you made warm ups, you mentioned zen of screaming and also vocal scaling, should I also make warm ups before practising? I know it is a silly question but I just want to be thorough. 2. You also mention throat muscles, now I have never really given any thought to throat muscles or on how to "use them" so if you could explain how to do people use them or if you can make a video about them then I would appreciate it a lot. Like you said something about moving your throat upwards, is that using your throat muscles or am I way off grid here? :D 3. Have you watched other vocal tutorials that you found helpful?

Best video on the web for fry screaming. Do you open your throat while singing, like when you yawn, or not?
@ConstructBand
@ConstructBand 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! You don't open up your throat when you're fry screaming. You do the opposite if anything! You create a lot of compression around your vocal folds so that they only have a tiny amount of room to move and they have no choice but to move rapidly and sort of vibrate. For singing, I would say yes but I wouldn't advise emulating a yawn while you sing. It should feel as natural as talking, with added power from your diaphragm, then you need to focus on retaining the position of your throat and diaphragm to hold out the required note. This can differ with other techniques though, such as head voice and falsetto. There is no diaphragm power involved with those techniques. Hope this helps!

Great tutorial man! First one ive been able to find where it doesn’t hurt like hell, still feels weird and is hard to hold but I guess that just comes with practice. im still confused with one thing tho, does this technique involve false chords at all?

Yep, that's normal at first. Give it some time and practise consistently. You'll be screaming like a beast in a few weeks. 😏

Alright man cool vid, iv been researching a lot about fry, I can do false and I mainly use it like yourself maybe a bit of lead But you see for example Corey Taylor I love his scream but his is more false chords I would say but when I perform any metal cover I will mainly be doing fry screams I could do the groak thing then was running into a wall then but later on because I just need that crackle and then over time projecting and shit but cool vid man 😎👍🤘

Don't know if you still reply to the comments on this video, but this has really been helping me a lot. Quick question though, how exactly did you practice after you got the sound down? Did you just mock-scream songs, just make the sound, or what? I have the basics but I just dont know what steps I need to take to further it exactly.
@ConstructBand
@ConstructBand 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, literally just keep working on it and try to practise along to other songs man. It's always good to hold out different vowel sounds for muscular growth and development too. "Ay, ee, i, oh, u, ahh (like in "far"), ehh (like in "red", ihh (like in "it"), uhh (like in "cut"). Practise them at different pitches and make sure you can achieve the desired sound for each vowel.

I'm having real trouble going from the groak to the crackle - whenever I try and tighten my throat muscles it feels almost gurgly, and something tells me that it's the wrong feeling. If I just push the fry, I can get it louder and more from a head voice place though, I don't know if that's helpful?

Just came across this, but this seems one of the better explained fry scream tutorials I've found. Hopefully I'm able to get it done. Thanks for this! Out of curiosity, is it possible to use fry and false cord at the same time?
@ConstructBand
@ConstructBand 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it's not something I've ever experimented with but I can't imagine it's possible. When you scream using false cord, there's quite a lot of airflow due to the nature of the technique (allowing the false cords to flap by guiding the air a certain way). Vocal fry is almost breathless so I doubt it's feasible!

Hi there, thank you so much for the tutorial, I still struggle from the groak to the crackle part. I have no problem groaking, but once I try it harder, my chin always tends to go forward and I feel my vocal cords closing to the point I can't really project any whatsover, any tips? Thanks so much
