Tips 1: ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM (great candidates bring a positive attitude) 2: ASKS PRIORITIZED QUESTIONS (targeted probing for relevant data) 3: USES A STRUCTURED APPROACH (provides a clear, logical framework)

I like how you hold up a sort of real case interview to demonstrate the weak and the good. Simple and effective!

This was a very informative video. As an analyst myself, I believe analysis is all about comparison. To show all three categories of the answer for us to be able to compare and learn the right way was a very effective idea. Thank you!

This is FIRE. In my experience, mastering case starts is everything. People have talked about recovering mid-case after a shaky start, but to me that's a mythological unicorn. I have never seen a good case performance that didn't also have a good starter.

In this good answer, which bucket will we see the competitive analysis and the client's ability to compete? I think how attractive the market is and how competitive the client could be (capabilities) are key in answering the client's question.

This is extremely helpful, thank you so much. I have a few questions I'd like to ask: 1. Here the good candidate showed his interest in a quite familiar topic - which was meal related. How can you show the interest/intellectural curiosity in a case that is completely alien to you? 2. I saw none of these candidates take any notes when: 1/ the interviewer told them about the case; and 2/ the interviewer answered their clarifying questions (for example she mentioned the figure 10% and US market, but even the Good candidate didn't take note and seems just memorizing the data). In real life, do you also NOT take any notes at these moments? 3. I would greatly appreciate if you could make a video on What to do when being stuck in a case interview (for example, suddenly being asked a question that we don't know how to answer, or being challenged by the interviewer that we don't know how to react - or rather, we aren't sure what kind of reaction the interviewer is expecting to see).

Hi Hanie - Good questions! 1) Well, if you know nothing about a space you can always start by asking questions to learn more and checking some assumptions you might have - which is a great way to start. Basically, if you know nothing about it, demonstrate your curiosity to learn more. 2) It just depends on your style - note taking never hurts! 3) Sounds good, will keep that in mind ;)

Should/would you ask what their current revenue is so you know how much of an increase the 10% is and should you ask about any margin requirements in conjunction with that number since the qsr breakfast market is presumably relatively elastic?

Also, the Good candidate had mentioned about "cost" under the Marketing bucket. Why would he put it there and not under the Financial bucket ? He mentioned Profitability under the Financial bucket so I think it could be reasonable to analyze cost when considering Profitability. But maybe the candidate had different rationale. Would love to hear his thoughts on this.

Good question. Obviously, overall cost will come into play in profitability but here the candidate is specifically talking about the cost of a marketing campaign, which is why it gets highlighted there.

Great video! I have a question about the delivery of the structure. I learned from a MBB case workshop that the high level buckets should be introduced first and then go back to elaborate each bucket in more detail. While in your example, you elaborated each bucket as you introduced each one. Do both delivery work? Or which one is a more preferred way? Thank you so much!

Generally, we don't agree with feedback like that. There is *not* one way to "skin a cat" so to say... many different approaches can work as long your thoughts are structured and your communication is clear!

@@rocketblocks Thank you so much for your reply! I totally agree with you! Just one more follow up question on the framework, does the depth and level of comprehensiveness of the framework differ between candidate-led and interviewer-led cases? For example, for the candidate-led interview, the most important thing is to drive the case to solve the problem, so the framework should be concise and shouldn't take too much time to deliver. While in the interviewer-led cases, the interviewer may ask you follow-up brainstorm questions that may or may not directly link to the overall framework, in this case, framework question itself becomes a critical step to provide your business insights and innovative thoughts in a more detailed way, which means the framework may end up being longer and takes more time to deliver. Does it make sense? I'm struggling between giving too much and going overtime or being concise but worried about not MECE enough. It's a long question, thank you so much for your time in advance!

I find it sort of ironical that only 30 to 90 seconds are allowed to structure your thoughts, yet interviewers are expecting you to bring industry-specific issues to the table for a strong opening. I find it very time restrictive, and usually use 2 to 3 minutes to gather my thoughts, and WRITE IT DOWN.
