How to set up an easy container garden re-using old items from around the house such as an old ice chest or storage totes and other things most people already have around the house. This is my first video I've uploaded. Thanks please like and subscribe and I will make more videos on the topic of gardening, and related topics, and even some un-related topics maybe.

Seems to me you could plant more than 1 tomato plant in those big containers. They are larger than earthboxes that plant 2. good growing!

Always squeeze the roots of the plants when you take it out of a container. The roots get all bound up in containers, and by squeezing them and loosening the dirt, the roots will want to grow more.

I did the same thing only because of my bad back, I took 6 ft cedar fence boards, cut them in two and made a stand for these storage containers to sit in...raising them off the ground about two feet. The cedar slides under the lip on top and its not a nuclear strike proof affair but its sturdy enough and high enough to be more comfortable for me, particularly on plants that need more attention.

People sure are mad about the way you did things! I mean it was 7 years ago and you probably figured out to put some weed barrier in to keep the dirt in, add a little mulch or stone on the bottom to promote drainage, found better plants for the containers or vise versa, and didn't spend a weeks worth of groceries on soil for like seven plants. I would assume you learned something! Jeez, the internet is so judgey.

Chuck Sparks 😂 for sure... was just making a video for fun and learning as much about content creation as about gardening, permaculture, and many related subjects since then. Yeah though people get upset about weird shit. “Mel’s mix” while it’s good is more expensive than needed. 🤷🏻‍♂️ not I make my own compost and have worm composts bins too. Chicken coop and run and gradually working towards less and less inputs with ultimate goal to have next to zero inputs. It’s all a process

did you spend a lot on the soil?
@mountaincreekhomestead

Actually you should have used sticks, tree branches , yard clippings leaves before putting soil in just like nature. That will get impacted. Most of my garden us totes. I use side holes to prevent tree roots from entering holes on bottom.

I would have placed the containers in their testing place first, layer the soil mixture and water it and the same time, then planted and poured water on the top, not spray.

Not sure if anyone asked this before, but do we need to line the bottom of the container before putting the mix in?
@DIYARMORY
@DIYARMORY 3 жыл бұрын
No you will lose s little bit of soil via the drainage holes, some people will place a broken terra cotta clay pot piece over a larger drainage hole to prevent some loss of soil. Plastic sheeting lined in any kind of bed will just break down into the soil eventually. Disclaimer: these totes don't last very long term as they get brittle from UV sun exposure and will crack easily after a summer or two at most. Even with lumbar prices as high as they are right now I would build a wooden box and have an open bottom on it.

@DIYARMORY
@DIYARMORY 8 жыл бұрын
+glendalynne janacek Late response but better late than never. One of the cherry tomato varieties I typically use gets fairly large. By large I mean 3-4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide in the metal cage and produces hundreds of cherry tomatoes. Same with Roma(Plum) variety and the heirloom black Krim that I've grown this way. Really produces a lot! When I've had this mix of tomatoes: 2 Roma, 2 Sweet 100-Cherry (hybrid), 2 Black krim heirloom it has produced enough for my family all summer into fall which is 4 people, plus my brothers household, neighbors, and I even shared with classmates and coworkers regularly. But whatever works for you we all have different wants and needs. Good luck with whatever you grow! : ) Thanks!
