Container home brings high-end functions to tiny prefab market

Concerned about the California housing market, friends Nate Garnero & Doug Burdge decided to make a high-end, prefab container home at a fraction of the cost of alternatives. They came with Buhaus, a high-end, custom-finished container home.
In the past couple of decades shipping containers have been injected into architecture as a cheap, available resource or a stackable one; Buhaus encloses the original box in polished aluminum to create a high-end aesthetic.
The original doors are still operable and open to create a large indoor/outdoor bathroom/shower. The cladding isn’t just a design feature, but serves as insulation and a barrier to wildfires; the designers were reacting to the 2018 Woolsey Fire that ripped through their native Malibu.
“At 160 sq feet, Buhaus is comfortable, customizable, and compact and is equipped with a bedroom and bathroom space. Deriving from the 20th-Century German architectural movement “bauhaus”, Buhaus is our model for Malibu... Buhaus is a living unit designed to be used as a guest house, backyard office, or studio.”

In the way with no hard hat or knowledge of how to behave. Cool slicksters creating over priced goop for wealthy but not too brights. Also, having a reflective surface in California sun is horrendous! The sun hits and sends a glare flare that is blinding. Wonderfully filmed presentation, as always. :) Yet, this unit and the way they constructed the cladding and the inside does not justify the ~$96000 price tag in my opinion. The cladding and the way they designed the bed is cheap (why not just a luxury sleeping couch?). You and other beloved architecture channels had tiny home builds in similarly cheap price range that had much more "luxury" and space. Sometimes 3-room-builds that can even host a small family. Also, pretty sure this build would not be allowed in my country. :D
@77Tadams

One thing to remember is that this is a concept. They used what they wanted because they are building concepts. That is what architects do. Also, you can steal some of that for your own build. Not sure why people get hostile over price when it is just really ideas come to life. Great....he is in CA, and things are priced way out of range. Doesn't mean it is crap just because someone doesn't agree on the price. Get an imagination people. Buy your container and make it what you want to make it for cheaper. That is what I am doing.

TVs look lame, they tell you that the owner is probably a couch potato who watches stupid shows or plays video games all day. @ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 4 жыл бұрын
@@paulaneary7877 You don't sand it on a regular basis unless you scratch it, otherwise it's just to blend in the seams and make it look like all one solid wall, etc. You can't do that with Quartz, the seams will remain visible. It's also easier to put Corian into curved and flowing shapes for design options... Quartz is nicer if you want a stone like appearance but some people like Corian for its range of alternative appearances. While both Corian and Quartz is cheaper than real stones but Corian is cheaper overall... For countertops, for example, Corian start at roughly $40 per square foot and stop at around $65. Quartz also starts at roughly $40 per square foot but can extend well beyond $200 per square foot for exotic variants... Quartz is superior but Corian is like quartz in that it is nonporous and, as such, highly resistant to staining and for something like a guest house and budget option it can work fine for the bathroom...

The raw container exterior would get far hotter if left exposed but they generally are well insulated when they get converted into homes and thus would not be bringing a lot of heat into the home... The first one was just a basic model meant for people who want to add a office, or guest room to their back yard and they only added the panel cladding because their first client didn't want it to look like a container, otherwise it would be even lower cost... Mind, in California it can cost upwards to over $60K to just add a bedroom to an existing house... A drop in backyard room that you can always move or sell gives more flexibility and allows it to be done at a more reasonable cost, at least by California standards... In Malibu, CA, which is where this builder is based, the median home value is $3,172,085 for what goes for normal over there... The large 40' model they show towards the later half of the video with lots of windows wasn't complete but was just a show model to show what they can do with windows that with other models they have set up is for clients to walk through and pick and choose what features they want in their build... He was basically explaining what they can offer... You're suppose to use your imagination for the rest because as the client you can tell them what to build and you can go from very basic to high end fully custom...

David Gregory - sure , as long as he has the geological and environmental permits , running fresh water , an approved toxic waste pit , a water restrictor in the shower , the approved doorknobs, earthquake and fire insurance, a concrete road big enough for fire engines leading from the highway to the house, and a turnaround for them .. I’m sure Iforgot a dozen more items, but you get the idea ; welcome to Malibu millionaires who can afford the fines for any deviations from the rules ! Like the Edge.

ollin - in Malibu it’s considered permitable only if it’s a motorhome - which means it’s got to be on wheels , roadworthy , and attached to the tow vehicle.. and god forgive you if you spill any water on the ground . I had my espresso maker empty onto the ground at first - “ whats this !? “ said the 4 300-pound armed women ( I swear it’s true) It’s coffee ! I swear it’s coffee ! “ we don’t care what it is it shouldn’t be on the ground !”

Same as the rest, you either connect it to the utilities or you opt to have them install tanks like an RV... They're generally meant to be hooked up as they are usually meant to be added to someone's back yard and you can just tap the same lines as the house... So only really a issue if it needs to be moved but if it stays in one location then it can be set up pretty much permanently...

pros: 1. nice on the outside(aesthetics) 2. nice on the inside (aesthetics) 3. convenient (EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE) Cons 1. that glass bathroom shield. is a no go. Cant get rid of the fear/anxiety of that thing falling while travelling. Once broken, difficult to get it replace. Better replace for long curtain and the bottom with idealy some curve ledges so that the water doesnt get spill away. 2. if the top is seal completely with aluminium cladding or you guys call it panel. Those cavity(we call them gaps), that air flow to get rid of hot air... hmm.... Hot air rises right??? where does it rise to then if it seal at the top? 3. water, water, water. Not sure how one would fit bath room into the living. I mean... you guys already have the idea of having bathroom outside. so... maybe make the shower head to be able to port outside the container. Yea... expose to outside people and yea.. outside stuff. at least, inside would have more space for other things. Dont have to deal with too much waste as well. 4. bathroom. maybe make the bathroom door outside of the container? Instead of INSIDE. At least the water(moisture) doesnt get trap in the GIANT COFFIN. and make life stuffy(stuff=choking with gaseous vapour and uncomfortable). I mean, have you guys been in a sauna? hot water vapour for relaxing? do you want sauna 24/7? Even when you sleep? 5. okay... california huh. Is that one of the land of fires? sorry.. too much avatar airbender. container huh? makes sense when you guys get to save your home. No one calls for CRANE services DURING a fire nearby. They would do it before the fire strikes. If it is a natural yearly occurrence. well. hope the American mentality would let you guys leave in peace or be under suspicion to leave a fire zone before the fire starts. Its like bad guys leaving the scene of the crime before it happen but applied to residence leaving the fire starting area before it happens. Yea... your country needs to shape up a bit more in this area. 6.Source of water. Good for raining situation or even water source. NEAR WATER SOURCE. So is other LIFEFORMS. limited to NEAR WATER SOURCE. pretty okay. mobility restricted. 7. Sanitary. O gosh. It is better to enter outlets that have in built toilets and do your sanitary business there. Imagine dealing with your own poo poo and have no idea where to put it. In the common rubbish bin? O gosh. In the sidewalk drain? In the sea and rivers like the indian cultures? Make use of the facilities that has been built. Until at least the facility decides to say, the toilet is only open for customers and not passerby. (maybe some french fries franchies starts doing this... well....you guys are F$%^&D) 8. Built to handle highways. Alright folks. remember!!! HIGHWAYS!!. It means, LEVELED ROADS, ENGINEERED! So what happens if it is ROUGH roads, ROCKY roads, SANDY, MUDDY. Read it. Learn it from reading manufacturing automotives vehicles. One vehicle made for handling built tar roads. Take it to the mountains and you are screwed. That is what the container is going to be isnt? Thats where the container is going to go, ISNT? PS:Not saying its bad. Just that if it is going to be a home for .... people who actually wants to live in a home. Theres a lot of room for IMPROVEMENT. BIG IMPROVEMENT. All the way to the government level, facilities and obviously community.

I normally sleep on a yoga mat on the ground at my dads but when I arrived today there was a single bed there. I hated it so we took it out of the room and I put the yoga mat on the ground. One of the things I hated was the step up to it. A mat on the ground seems inviting. Now I know what this guy meant when he said he didnt want to have to step into the house just wanted a flat entrance. A flat entrance to something is welcoming a step up is cold, takes effort, and seems like someone has to ask permission to do it. Before I realised this with my bed I had no idea what he was on about but its a deep psychological effect.

Why would you have a bathroom that can open to the outside, and then the other doors are glass, It's like a Pittsburgh Platter bathroom.
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 4 жыл бұрын
Same reason they do it in RV's... You may want to clean up before entering the main space and tracking mud, etc. through the interior... Simple practicality with limited space and you could always just close the doors when using it... It can be placed far away from anyone possibly being close enough to see and the owner may just prefer to feel part of nature and enjoy the fresh air... Not everyone lives in a city where you have neighbors all around you and no other barriers than your walls...

In a prior video here on this channel, a guy that had both container and standard built tiny houses on his property, said the container homes cost substantially more to build than a freestanding build. They are basically overpriced caravans with none of the practical mobility. The container "re-use" mantra is just a social credit/cool factor gimmick, at this point.

Skid Row is sustainable, it's been there for 100 years. People who live in 1.5 million dollar mobile homes in Malibu are funny - you don't HAVE to live there, it's optional right? It's not even that nice anymore, no longer some cool hippy enclave, Brian Wilson wandering around the beach. It's Kardashified hyper-crap at this point.
