Vojtěch Valda's shipping container house runs on wind, solar, and pulleys. He and his carpenter brother converted the 20-foot (6 meters) high cube into a transforming space for his family of four thanks to his transforming inventions like a retractable porch, table, and bed. His low-tech creations were inspired by the simplicity and reliability of the nautical world.
Valda wanted to use a container because he could build it at his workshop and easily transport it to his off-grid site. He built a wide roof for solar and to collect water for his 1000 liter tank. Valda and his wife documented the build process and sell the plans to other DIY builders.

The bed is great and I also really like that big air gap between the roof and the top of the container. It should keep the house pretty cool in the summer.

I've thought of that concept of an air gap for years. So there won't be any radiant heat transfer in hot, sunny weather. Glad someone finally put this simple concept into practice!

Some really smart design principles utilized in this build. Simple, manual, robust systems are far more reliable & maintainable than over complex modern state-of-the-art solutions. You can keep them running even when society itself is breaking down. Given the many problems brewing around the world in the 21st century, including climate change & economic instability, a forward looking person with some smarts would be buying a piece of land with clean water, good soil, some forest and low property taxes on which to create a small, sustainable, renewable energy powered homestead. Challenge number 1 is then to quickly inhabit the land for periods of time to start creating basic survival infrastructure. A low cost, transportable, self-sufficient drop & go container house like this is perfect for this shelter role. It can even be secured for when you have to return to the city for your regular day job, where you can earn some hard currency. A second container set up as a workshop with all of your tools and a way to store materials will get you fully operational in no time. (See Project Kamp for their brilliant 2 container setup.) So, nicely done Vojtech & Family!

Agreed, and in Australia it's needed to overthrow council officials who refuse to allow dwellings such as this. Even in rural areas there are many restrictions.

Beautifully designed and so well thought out! Most of us would do well to live in a fraction of the space that we now occupy. We have 2 shipping containers for my husbands tree service business. I tease him that when he’s ready to retire we’ll move into the containers! I look forward to seeing more of these creative designs!👍🏻

This man and his brother are brilliant! If they were to digitize the patterns of the interior panels and cabinetry, they could easily be replicated and produced using cnc machinery. Thus, they could market them as a do it yourself kit. Similar to an IKEA style assembly

He wouldn't need that pulley inside for the bed if he would flip it so it just folds out from the top it would be easier on his back & one person can do it. Put a hole in the center to get your fingers in, like he did on his cabinets, if he has plywood on it for the bed, if it's slats, you don't need finger holes. I like his setup. Very good job, Chris from Missouri

Love it. Great job. A simple life is a better life. Wife and I jumped out of our careers and greatly reduced our consumerism. Sold what we were told was the “American dream” and haven’t looked back. We are only about 8 years into our initial changes, but now live on very little money. We started our own business, and have no new vehicles, no credit cards etc. the only debt we have is our home and a small vehicle loan. Next phase will be to finalize our long term home plan for a simple sustainable home. While we make a good living in our business, we want to ultimately live on $20k per year….and to do so comfortably. After living many years on 6 figures, we have lived on about $35k for the past 8 years. Our son married and they had a baby 6 months ago. He liked the direction were were going and chose to live first in a used, but very nice, 5th wheel with 3 slide outs. They live on about $1500 per month, although he too works in our family business and makes significantly more. Very proud of him. He drives a tundra with 145k miles, and a used suv for his wife. Would never turn back to the rat race of chasing the materialistic consumerist society that we are sold. Never

Im absolutely going to use this video as part of our inspiration for our build. Love the simplicity of everything. We are going to use two large containers in an earthship type installation. So definitely not an earthship, but a nice hybrid version to still get some of the benefits while having the simplicity of build of the container. Im a General Contractors, so building isnt an issue, but simple is appealing

Portable gas bottles inside is against code here: its much safer outside and plumbed with rigid pipes. It's better outside and LPG leaks unlike natural gas settles down on to the floor near the power points and boom. But that's the only fault from putting the one tone of water on the ground: with a pump there is no reason to elevate it.
