If you want to call police then don't shy away when they ask for your ic. They need to write report to prove they actually got go down to the location after a police report.

Police can check your ID. When a case is reported, police will check IDs on all the people involved first, standard SOP. IDs of the person who called/report police, ID of the accused/suspect, ID of witnesses. Security guard may not check ID or your belongings, unless they are assigned at the gate or entrance to check, but minimum police officers and up can check. If you don't co-operate, very difficult to make your case valid or proceed with investigation. Simple thing also don't know.

The police already told him under what law section empowered him to exercise his right when he demand to know the reason. If police are not given this power , how do you expect police to know if a foreign worker has a legit work permit, an overstayer or illegal immigrant? And ffs, this is Singapore not Malaysia. Each country has their own set of rules and laws given to police authority.

@Naxalite_Power_Aganist_Fascist nonsense, you're not malaysian. malaysians are required by law to provide IC to the police if they're in uniform. even in plainclothes, police can stop and ask you after showing their police id. they also must show their police id when you ask them. its not only for a "specific branch" of the police force.

As of now, no one here knows the full story so here's some speculations: 1. Cashier guy has some criminal record and is afraid to give his ID. 2. Cashier guy also made racist remarks, dared the other guy to call the police, police got called in, cashier guy plays victim to have an edge over the dispute. 3. S.33(1) Of the Criminal Procedure Code gives a police officer the right to demand the name and residence of a person whom he reasonably believes has commited a non- seizable offence. If that person does not give his name and residence, ( ie, show his ic) , or gives a false one, he can be arrested by the police officer to ascertain his name and residence but must be released within 24 hrs or brought before the nearest magistrate's court.
