The way this works is to first reduce the current with 100 Ohms before the Zener diode clamps voltage to 5.7V, then silicon diode such as 1N4001 is further dropping the voltage by 0.7V to make it 5V on theory. There are two problems with this approach. First, the current is very low (i=V/R=12V/100 Ohms=120mA). The second problem is that the voltage drop across a silicon diode changes with the current flowing through it. You can already tell that output is 5.19V, not 5V. If you really want to make this circuit works, use 10 Ohms resistor(~1.2A), but it has to be a high wattage resistor. Also, Zener and has to be able to handle that current as well. Even after supersizing those components, the voltage will vary depends on the load. Just use a 7805 voltage regulator.

Normally you would simply use a 7805 regulator or a 5v zener, Or even a combination of resistors. SO, if you explain what you are doing with those components then people might prefer it, otherwise it does seem like a waste of components.

What a pointless waste of diodes.This is a bridge rectifier used on DC. So one of the 1N4007s is permanently reverse biased (the one with its cathode to the + supply). It can simply be removed. Replace the Zener (with anode to +) with a bit of wire. It's forward biased so is just acting as a 0.6V voltage drop. Replace the other 1N4007 with another bit of wire, again, it's permanently forward biased so is just dropping 0.6V. Replace the 5.7V Zener with a 5.0V as the 0.7V is just to compensate for the drop across the useless forward biased 1N4007. You end up with a 100Ω resistor in series with a reverse biased 5.0V Zener across the supply, with 5V taken from the junction of resistor and cathode of the Zener. Saved 3 diodes.

It is not correct way of converting but you will get 5 v . But diodes are heated too. It not convert realy in 5v it short the voltage more than 5v . You can't use it in your circuit . It gives 0.14 amp of current.

Ha Ha ... Another brilliant Indian "electronics - expert" showing how NOT to do it. We had once one "electronician" with all kinds of Indian "diplomas" working for the IT department. He was a real waste and ended up putting 220V on a lan cable resulting on frying a dozen of PC's and several switches. Now, we hired a German IT guy and since 5 years everything runs as smooth as one can wish. My advice (as IT manager) ... Do NEVER think of employing people coming with Indian university "diplomas". These are good guys, but when it comes to problem solving, they are a real waste of time and money.
