I have had one of these going for several years, our old chest freeze was repurposed, now I have 2 on the go. After the one is full I make a second batch, and move the complex one onto our raised beds. I use alfalfa pellets and peat moss mix, for the base , or even used a bale of hay, I mounted a 2" valve on the drain, let the original hay/peat soak for several days, then drained into a large 400gallon tote, and filled with water to use as a watering tea, then let the alfalfa compost usually takes a week + and when heat is gone dump grocery store veggie scraps, Starbucks coffee waste. and bump some of my soil on it, and if needed a few handfuls of worms from bin. My 0.5 organic matter Arizona desert soils are alive with worms, cover crops, wood chips, manure, alfalfa hay, pellet plant wastes. And neighbors get to benefit from my food forest. It sure is better than watching Fox News getting mad at the blame for food prices, get to share and bring cheer and good tasting food to neighbors. Let's ask what can I do for America, not what Gov can do for me. Cheers.

No kidding. It seems like most of the comments in other videos are of grown people talking about what their parents is grandparents right them about catching and working with worms when they were kids. They seem very fond of those memories.

My parents gave us their deep freeze when they sold there house and went to work on the road. I’ve had it for 5 years and it’s finally gone. In the time I’ve had it we’ve built a house, had a third kid, and started a homestead. I’m going to be composting scraps, yard debri, and rabbit poop with worms in this freezer. Over 20 years and it’s still serving our family and helping us keep food on the table when things get tough.

Don’t forget to put a lock on the freezer. In Florida the law says you have to remove the door of throw away refrigerator and freezers because kids can climb in. My grandmother put a paddle lock on her freezer so I couldn’t climb in and get stuck.

Growing up in Florida an old refrigerator is one of the most used items for a worm bed that and a bathtub. Refrigerators were good because they kept out the 100 degree weather.

I was hoping it would help keep out the harsh weather. That is the only reason I haven’t had an outdoor bed yet. It rarely gets over 100 here in Kentucky but we do get several upper 90 days in the middle of summer and it gets down to the single digits some during winter. I’m excited to see how they do in it.

Hello from my northwest Florida homestead. I was looking for videos on repurposing my chest freezer that quit working. I have vermicomposted on a small scale before and that was the first thing I thought about to repurpose the chest freezer. My second choice is to use it as a large ice chest, my third choice is possibly a root cellar, but not really sold on that idea, and I also saw some people using theirs as a raised bed but not sure about that one either.

If you farm black soldier flies eggs, larvae, and maggots, their compost, compost tea, they will help your compost and also collect it for sale. If you sell the worm eggs etc. Both species will give you a decent income if sold in the right place

As the worms have no teeth they need grit either oyster shells or egg shells to digest their food The recommend with egg shells you should microwave them for a little while to kill off any salmonella You need a small separate bowl of water putting in the microwave with the egg shells to save damaging the microwave

Be Careful when setting up a worm bin like this. I went from 4 - 28 Gal totes that I did well in to a freezer like this. Hoping to increase out put and have less work. I'm not sure where I went wrong but the freezer bin built the way they show all looked good. I set up the freezer bin like I would a 28 Gal tote proportionally for the size. The freezer bin ended up getting way to hot and killed about 2 thousand worms. I would like to see a play by play youtube video on how this works in the 80 to 90 degree temps. The 28 Gal totes never got to hot! Any Ideas?

How would the worms do in the heat? It’s 100° quite regularly here in the South. I could put bins in an out building that would keep direct sun off the bins and maybe a little cooler, but not much. We’re go too much to try swapping out ice jugs. I need a set it and forget it system that can handle idle periods.

As long as it stays in the shade it should do pretty good in hot weather. If the outdoor temperature stays 100 for several days though it will heat up the bin no matter how good it is insulated. I would partially burry the bin in a shaded location if our summers got crazy hot. That will use the earths consistent cool temperature to help regulate the bin during the harsh weather.

I would say with a little extra care they would do fine in -45 for a period of time. My thoughts for this winter even though it only gets to the lower teens and sometimes single digits here is to put gallon jugs filled with hot water in the bed a couple times a day or if you don’t care to use a little electricity you could put a reptile heat mat on top of the bedding during the harsh weather to give them a safe haven to flock too. Adding extra food to get the bed hot composting would help to but it isn’t consistent. -45 is crazy cold though. 🥶
