If it were me I would of cut the metal top so that I would of got a new angle directly on top of the old. If it was to tall I would have put it just to the side and welded it to that heavy angle. As it is your top is now supported by welds on the ends. I have the same trailer and added a dovetail to it. I used a metal tube (2” x 3” ) supported by the angle iron rails running front to back to support my now 2’ pressure treated wood on the dovetail.

You need to add 4 or 8 D rings to tie down with the tie straps. 2 in front 4 on back. Trailer came out nice.

thanks I appreciate it!! yes I do but I made some adjustable D rings that go into the pockets on the side and so far it works out great because I can move them if I need to but I agree it would be nice with a few solid mounted!! thanks for the support!!!

I would of put the metal down on the previous cross members so I would have that little lip on the sides. And the purpose of having the lip would be just in case you dropped a socket or bolt something like that, and if you forget to pick up and leave it'll stay on the trailer till you got home. And using the preexisting cross members would save on weight. But it wouldn't save a whole lot on weight cause you probably didn't add no more then 150lbs adding the new cross members.
@bought2build
@bought2build Жыл бұрын
@@shanesimpson6921 ahhh I didn’t even think about that that’s actually a really good idea! Only thing I didn’t like was how thin the old ones were mine were like double the thickness and a lot closer together I do like the lip idea tho! It actually would have worked out good! I’ll have to remember that doubt I’ll do it again tho tbh lol

@@shanesimpson6921 ahhh just thought of one issue with that the factory dove tail was steel deck and it was at the top so I would have had to cut that up or make a step down I think that’s what made me do it how I did it without thinking twice

The diamond plate sheets look a lot like stainless steel to me, and they very well could be because they came from a factory
@bought2build
@bought2build Жыл бұрын
it could be possible that would be awesome!! they had a coating of some type of paint on them that was horrible to try and get off but sadly I believe they are just regular mild steel as I left some bare scraps out in the rain and they started to rust 😢

@@bought2build even some stainless steel rust, try sticking the magnet to it.. Even if a good quality magnet lightly sticks to the diamond plate there's a very high probability that it's stainless steel.. And if so that diamond plate is extremely expensive.. Make sure you don't leave it anywhere unlocked people are assholes I know from experience unfortunately..

Square tube would have been stronger and spread the load better than the angle. Spray cans of undercoating was way more work and far more expensive than even a cheap HVLP gun. Lastly, You are very easy to understand in Your videos and generally speak well, with one exception: 99 % of the time where You use the word "seen", You should be using the word saw. Your welds look very good and sound. The diamond plate is hot rolled carbon steel. the coating You refer to is called mill scale. Cleaning the mill scale prior on Your welding areas provides a stronger and cleaner weld. There are dozens of KZfaq videos on how to remove mill scale. Hope this helps.
@bought2build
@bought2build Жыл бұрын
thanks I appreciate constructive criticism 🤟👍 I agree square tube would be stronger but the factory only had a few angle pieces so I went with thicker angle so far so good with my 4,500lb hellcat on it! I didn't include it in this video but I have a couple guns none of them seemed to want to spray this bed liner I ended up rolling it on 3 coats came out pretty good all and all! yes I am familliar with mill scale but this was something els it was a paint or something had a smell to it " should have worn a mask" but it would kind of melt and what not. thanks for the input and support!!!!

I do not understand some people. You had a very good functioning trailer that had wood that was not rotten. That perfect wood floor is just as strong as metal. Why would you go through the time and expense of removing a perfectly good wood floor and replace it with expensive metal? Why not wait another 5 years when the wood floor is not usable anymore and then replace with metal? In my opinion it is a total waste of money. Waste like this is sickening. I guess some people have more money than brains in my opinion.
@bought2build
@bought2build Жыл бұрын
Hey I hear ya man everyone is entitled to an opinion and that’s fine. To be honest with you the main reason I did it was for looks the wood just looked trashy all chipped and just ugly the paint on the trailer was faded and ugly as well and I didn’t want to paint the trailer now and then again later when I did the deck so I just did it all at once. Second reason all the metal came from an old military warehouse where I got it for much cheaper than I could have ever anywhere els so it made sense to buy it up. The third reason is because i wanted welding practice and that I got which has made me comfortable to do so many other projects that I have done since then. also I saved all the wood and have since repurposed it as a floor for one of my carports. It may look like I have money to just throw away but I can promise you I don’t. I am just like everyone els looking for the affordable way to do something and using what I have and or can find to get the task done. It all started with having a shield made to protect the car on the trailer. A local fab place wanted almost three thousand dollars to build it and me and my dad looked at each other and said well buy a welder and figure it out ourselves first even if it takes 2-3 tries we’ll still be ahead of the game and then have a welder for other projects. Bit of a rant but I save and try to repurpose everything that i can! Hopefully this can help you understand me 👍👍🤟🤟🤟

@@bought2build I have a car hauler with a wood floor and use it to move a race car around. I was having issues with the rear u-joint and was sick of getting splinters in my back when I would slide on the damn thing. Wood is fine, but dealing with the maintenance is a nightmare. Spraying it with oil and shit to keep it in a decent condition is a pain in the ass, messy, and slicker than snot when it rains + rubber tires. We strap our junk good, but wood has its own issues. My exhaust blows down and wood + oil soaked + heat = fire. Steel doesn't burn. There's pros and cons to both materials, but I am here because I want to do this to my trailer too. Sick of bug sprayer with linseed, used engine oil +diesel + stink.
