A reminder for some RV ovens is that you may have a separate 'light position' for your pilot light, requiring that you push in or turn the spring- loaded knob and hold it there for 20 seconds while you light the pilot and let the thermocouple come up to temp so that the gas flow will stay on and the flame stay lit. Also if your propane tanks have been off for awhile while your RV was in storage or when both tanks were disconnected to have therm filled, you don't want the pilot light to be the first thing you try to light. Light a stove top burner first to purge the air from the gas line, then light your pilot lights.

I use a cast iron lid with my cast iron skillet to make biscuits. Never had to flip mine.

I get a laugh at people complaining about RV ovens. Gas ovens have been around for a long time, they burn gas and get hot, they are small in an RV, but people bake things over campfires, use some patience, use some practice... a metal box that gets hot can heat up food.

I bake in our oven all the time! Casseroles, biscuits, cornbread, rolls, brownies, cookies, whatever. I use an AirBake insulated cookie sheet instead of the pizza stone, so I don’t have to worry about the stone (or tiles) breaking. No burnt bottoms here! But I had not thought about placing the pan on the bottom shelf to brown the top! Brilliant! Also, I keep the pilot light on till we are finished with the oven for that campground stay. If I need to put something back in, I just reset the temp.

When we’re dry-camping, I put my pan of English muffins on the bottom and let the flame “broil” or toast them. Works great. Thanks for these tips. An oven in the RV is a must-have for me.

Kristy, if you don't already have it the lid from the Lodge dutch oven will also work on the skillet, preheat it and it will help even out your baking. The pour spouts allow stream to escape so as long as you're not trying to do a souffle it works better than a bare skillet. Just a tip from a scout dad who gets lots of practice with alternative cooking =)

Not a trick for RV oven - but you can put your cast iron BBQ grates into a self-cleaning oven at home. Set to self-clean - will clean the oven and those grates will look like new.

Pilot lights used to be standard in kitchen stoves, in the oven always on, all winter and summer, some even under the stove top to light a burner without a match. So, Richard explained about the thermocouple, that prevents gas from escaping if the heat from a burning pilot goes out. The same principle was used on water heaters for many years. Gas refrigerator also uses a pilot. These used to be lit in an access door on the outside of the RV. Once you get familiar with how it works, then it's not scary.

Our oven isn't deep enough for the pizza stone unmodified. I measured the depth of the oven. Instead of cutting off from just one side, I thought it best for air flow to measure out half the distance from the center of the stone to each side and make two cuts, just a bit short to have full circulation. I drew the lines and cut them with a Dremel tool fitted with a cutting wheel. Take your time and cut the whole thing. On my first stone I thought having a deep groove all the way to half the thickness was enough to give it a snap. It snapped the entire stone through the center.

The older we get, the less we like getting down on our knees on the floor and folding up like a pretzel to light an oven. I open the oven door and place on the door a round travel mirror that rotates on a folding stand. I angle the mirror so in can look down and see the pilot assembly at back of the oven. Then I use a long flexible lighter to reach back and light the pilot; all without having to get on my knees or stick my head into the oven. I don't have to crawl to the nearest chair to get up and I've never lost my eyebrows while lighting the oven. Smart, Safe and Easy. Free tip, no extra charge. Dave

New RV owner here. I heard about the pizza stone prior to buying my RV, so pre-purchased it. I have used the oven a few times now. First I made biscuits and since my cookie sheet would not fit in the oven, I placed the biscuits directly on the pizza stone. It worked fantastically. They came out great. The last time I used the oven, I made a pizza which I placed directly on the pizza stone and ended up setting the smoke alarm off (well, I know that works now). I did not check on the pizza as much as I should have and it was a little dark on the edge, but not burned. So, checking it more often would probably have prevented that issue. We have, but not much. Most of our baked goods were frozen at home and packed tight in the freezer. A quick microwave and breakfast scones or muffins are ready for munching. The oven is good storage, but we wanted a working oven as one of the appliances in the coach. We had no trouble lighting the oven after the first try. Yes, a flashlight made a big difference. We think that the right pans are part of the solution, so preplanning is required to use the oven. Thanks for the tips.

When we first got our camper, our Dometic (but I think they're all about identical no matter the brand) oven burned EVERYTHING, even at the lowest temp setting. What I did was get a cheap, (about $1.00) appropriately sized steel cookie sheet from Wally World, drilled a 1/2" hole at each corner in the "flat", and a 1/2" hole in the center of the sheet as well. I then laid it upside down on the shelf that covers the burner, and centered it so that the vent holes on the shelf were not covered. This acts as a heat shield to block and distribute the direct heat from the burner down below under the shelf. This tamed it down substantially... almost too much... right now I'm in the process of getting it "dialed in" just perfect by adding a couple of vent holes to the heat shield to let just a little more heat get through. Easy fix for an angry oven!!

We use our RV oven every once in a while. Mostly precook our meals as we are part time RVers. It took me a couple minutes to figure this out. Good reminder!

This video popped up in my feed yesterday and I wanted to thank you for it. We have been living in our RV full-time for the last 4mths. Its our 1st RV and its an older model...and we have been too afraid to light the oven. OMG you have changed our life! After watching your video WE DID IT, we lit the pilot light! We feel so brave and empowered! Thank you thank you thank you! I'm going to check your videos now for instructions on how to light the hot water heater :/ ...not kidding, we havent used that either. But we haven't needed it really, but now its starting to get cooler in AZ.

New to RVing and new to LoLoHo. You guys are great...watched your UP video and been cramming ever since. I've seen a few replies from folks like us who do not have an oven. We've had great success with an Omnia, corn bread, apple crisp, brownies, even individual Godiva lava cakes for my birthday :-)

I've had my Airstream trailer for 20 years and have never once used the oven because I am too afraid to light it. You made it seem very simple so maybe I'll give it a try because I do miss having pizza when I'm out on the road! Thanks for showing how simple it is and giving me the confidence to try it.

Air bake cookie sheets are a game changer too IMO. Really helps with over browning on the bottom so the tips and centers have time to cook. 9/10 I finish stuff on the very bottom too just to get a titch more golden on top.

Try using the top rack for less burning the bottoms and better browning on top.

I like the re-lighting tip, using the oven mitts. Nice one! I use a thick, rectangular pizza stone to keep the heat even. Takes longer to warm up, but I find that it distributes the heat more evenly. (although I've only used it a couple of times to re-heat frozen food from Schwan's. The cooking time is just a couple minutes longer than what is suggested on the container).

Preheat the oven. For my RV oven, preheating for 15-20 minutes helps eliminate some of the 'hot spots'.

One tip about lighting the pilot light, if you RV has been sitting fo awhile, light one of your stove top burners first. That will help get the propane up to the pilot light sooner.

Yay for RV ovens! When we lived in ours, I used mine all the time. It was wonderful for heating up our leftovers in the cast iron skillet, I could put a whole meal in to heat up. Sometimes it was even better than the day before! Thank you for sharing Kristi!

I have had 3 trailers with an oven and only used the oven once in about 6 years. Now I have a HiLo trailer with no oven and I could not be happier no wasted space. If I really want to cook oven style I will use a dutch oven. Thanks for the video they are all good.

I think it really depends on the individual. I personally would really miss my propane oven, but others never use them. It just goes to show that everyone has different priorities when shopping for an RV. 😁

@@movingforwardLDTH We do a fair bit of campfire cooking but mostly on the stovetop in cast iron. We make pizza and quesadillas, taco salad is a favourite , breakfast burritos, egg McMuffins, pie iron sandwiches, bannock on stick over the fire, sloppy Joe's, chili, burgers, hot dogs, tenderloin, brats etc on BBQ. Lunch is fairly light..salads, sandwiches, soup, snacky veg/crackers with dip, scones, various wraps, foil packs on fire, stuffed baked potatoes on fire. That's pretty much what I can think of off the top of my head. We walk lots or we'd likely gain weight camping. Lol 171 days to our May long weekend but who's counting?

Since we have a electric microwave/convection oven we can't cook on it unless we use the generator when dry camping. So many times we use our Traeger Ranger as a pellet fed convection oven, which we run on our rig inverter. We also carry a Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer which I like to bake in it, many times using a porcelain cast iron dutch oven. The dutch ovens too distribute heat really well. Happy baking.

I don't use a stone . I preheat 25° higher than recipe requires. Turn down heat when adding food. This prevents heat loss causing gas to come back on when adding food. The thermostat is a MUST have . For cornbread my cast iron skillet goes in the oven to preheat when I light the stove. Add a teaspoon of oil to pan and spread evenly. Your cornbread should hit that hot skillet and sizzle . I take skillet out (with oven glove) put on burner , pour in mix , return to oven and bake 20 minutes. No flipping required but you do rotate the pan 10 minutes in. The hot spot is the back . Your cornbread should pull away from the sides and form cracks in the top. The bottom should always be darker than top. To calibrate your oven to the correct temp remove oven knob. The screw you see in the stem is how to calibrate it. To the right is hotter to the left is cooler. You need a small screwdriver like in an eyeglass repair kit.

$0.97 un-glazed porcelain 12x12 floor tile fits perfectly and works just as well as an expensive pizza stone to distribute the heat evenly. Just make absolutely certain it's an un-glazed tile. It works so well we have one in our home oven.

I tried the unglazed tile years ago and didn't have great luck. My $15 pizza stone is stronger and has worked better for me, but go with whatever works for you! 👍🏻🤙🏻

Great topic. After lighting pilot, the wait you see is bc there’s a sensor/heat sensitive switch that completes circuit at a prescribed temperature. Then the oven lights. Typically you wait 10-15 seconds before turning knob. Just a common thing about “pilot lights”, heaters, hot water, etc… love your dinners

I use a broiler pan from an oven I got rid of, it sits on solid metal rack that separates flame, now your heat will distribute evenly

My wife hasn't taken the time to experiment with our RV's propane oven, but I'd like us to use it more. I'd gotten biscuits on top rack to come out nice, but tried a frozen pizza while using a 12" square ceramic floor tile (easier to find than a pizza stone) to distribute the heat, but it cracked half way through the process (I'm told because it was a "glazed" ceramic tile). The bottom crust of the pizza did get a bit charred once after removing the few pieces of broken tile from the oven bottom, but the pizza tasted like a brick oven pizza! Am eager to try again. I use a rectangular stone that is slightly smaller than the width of the oven. I place this directly on the heat source as you mentioned. My heat distribution is greatly improved. I do like your tip on placing the pan under the heat source and using like a broiler.

Can't wait to have a rig with an oven! My friend made biscuits in cast iron with a lid on top of the stove in the Tetons this summer! She made a big square one and it flipped nicely. Be safe! Hugs!

Thanks for your tips on using your RV oven! I love that you use a pizza stone for more even cooking. I have had a pizza stone in my kitchen and have never used it. I’m going to put it in our RV now! And I never thought about using the bottom of the oven to brown food! 👍🏻😊

Good video and tips. Even in a house some ovens don’t cook evenly and one needs to rotate pans. Ok now I need to go make a skillet of cornbread😁👍 Yawl have a great week!

Great vid! Much needed topic. Please show us girls more of what you cook in your oven on an item specific basis. Even if it makes for a really short video, we’d love to know your different tips and tricks for casseroles, breads, pizzas, desserts, etc. Or include a little cooking segment in each of your vids. After the pilot is lit the thermocouple has to warm up before the gas begins to flow.

I keep my pizza stone on the very bottom of the oven all the time. It seems to keep the heat even throughout and the temp. Seems to be consistent with the oven regulator.

Hello! We cook in our oven. Works great. We do rotate our food 2 or 3 times while cooking and we have a 10x10 cast iron griddle we use instead of a pizza stone. We have the same thermometer in the same place you have.
