We are extremely pleased to welcome to Rannaghore Ke? journalist Shoaib Daniyal. Shoaib is a political editor with the online news publication, Scroll.in, where he writes and edits columns, hosts shows, along with a multitude of other duties.
Shoaib works in Delhi, but is originally from Calcutta. He grew up in central Kolkata, and in this episode he does a very good job of presenting the nuances of life in the diverse, multi-ethnic setting of 90s central Kolkata. The dishes that he chooses to cook in this episode-his nani's mutton chaap, dry liver fry (allegedly from Blue Fox), and the Sindhi teatime snack "sayel"-reflect that.
Shoaib also talks about some of the challenges that face journalists and journalism in India today, particularly the problem of monetising a public interest good such as the news. As a traditional, mainstream journalist, he also engages very seriously, and in a balanced manner, with the phenomenon of independent, online content creators entering the journalism space to inform and educate audiences.
We had a lot of fun shooting this episode, and listening to Shoaib’s stories and insights. So we hope you will watch it until the very end.
