You thought you had speakers in the back of the front seats of your XKR, but could never get any sound out of them.
I’ve got news for you.
They’re not speakers, They’re a grill for the fans in each seat that move the air for the ar condioned cooling and heating of the seats.
You won’t be aware but there are also fans in the seat bottoms as well.
This video will show you how to replace the filters used by these fans in the 2013 XK/XKR and well as XF, XE, F-Pace, I-Pace and Land/Range Rover models that have cooled and heated front seats.
In case you didn’t know and to give you some bragging rights with your Mercedes friends. The ventilation system in the Jags is a true cooling system using the A/C air as opposed to the Mercedes system that is just an airflow with no cooling from the A/C.

Excellent video!! I was jsut looking at an XKR to buy and was wondering what the sound coming from the back was, saw the grilles, thought they were speakers, but heard no music. I wondered if they were for a fake engine sound system (Ford has done this on some cars), but heard no sound on engine revving either. Thanks for solving this mystery, and the useful maintenance tips!

You and I, alike, when I first saw the grilles,I thought they were speakers as well. Good luck with your purchase. When you do get the car, give the back of seat speakers!!! a clean. I was amazed how much it improved the seat cooling.

The cooling and heating is not provided by the A/C air as stated but rather by Peltier cells in the seats themselves .

Good information. I was not aware other than they are actually cooled and not just ventilated. Thanks for the info. I’ll have to look up about Peltier.

I was wondering about that. The only other car I'm aware of with this system is the Cadillac XLR, which are very effective for a while, but I think the heat builds up under the seat, and they can't move heat away any more. I don't think they have fans, so I expect the Jag coolers to be more effective on longer trips.

@@louisxiiiipeltier cells are quite inefficient but the in this application it provides a neat solution to both heating and cooling although the heating is never as intense as electric 0:12 , all my cars since I had Range Rovers have merely had ventilated seats and that never quite cuts the mustard.

You certainly need it, we only get consecutive 40+ degree days in Sydney (105F)

If you have cooled seat settings on your touch screen you will at least hav eteh fans under the seat. To be sure look for what appears to be a speaker grill on the back of your seats.
