Cooling the Uncoolable Legion Go SSD | 2mm & 4mm Heatsink Installation & Comparison

Күн бұрынInstalling a heatsink for the SSD might seem straightforward, but finding a suitable one can be challenging, because of clearance constraints. In our previous video, we tested several heatsinks on the SSD, and only the slim copper one fit perfectly. In this video, we'll continue exploring with two more heatsinks, measuring 2mm and 4mm, specifically for the Legion Go NVMe 2242 original SSD size, while comparing their thermal performance!
Cooling your SSD will greatly help its longevity while safely giving you the maximum performance it can offer.

Got my 2TB 980 Pro with Heatsink open on the back of the mod cover (it won't fit in the bay), and it is running nicely. it gets hot but not to hot to touch, and it does it while running a lot faster. Shame it doesn't fit in the bay as its not only to tall (as I expected) its to wide even though we are only talking a mm or so on each side , but its on there solid now and can benefit from a USB fan when docked (where it doesn't get hot at all). The faster drives do seem to benefit some games, or at least I noticed it in BG3 as it seems to hitch less, plus I am expecting better sustained boost speeds with less heat in the case. I filtered the vents mind you as those holes worry me more than the NVMe as it currently is, as luckily I had an old magnetic filter for the 220mm case fan that I cut up and glued inside.

its definitely advised to install a mesh filter with this back cover, but if you are not going to use a 2280 drive and just stick with the original SSD 2240 or use a 2230 installing inside, etc it is not ideal to use this cover, this one make sense only for when you plan to install a 2280 drive

You should also try using the heatsinks with thermal paste

Unrelated but did you notice that bios version 31 defaults to tighter timings with everything set to auto? it tightened my cas latency from 23 to 20.

Really? Wow, I didn't notice it. So, they tuned it themselves to get some performance. Good thinking by LeGo team! Thx for the share

@@TECHOSAUR update: turns out the ram timings being automatically tightened was a result of me disabling ecc read and write in bios. Gives a small but nice boost in cpu and gpu performance as well as giving you extra headroom for tightening. I got 7500MT @ CL16 working

Why you did not remove the wrap around from the SSD? It is an insulator at this point. You would get better thermal contact by removing it and replace the thermal pad from the heatsink to something proper.

@@TECHOSAUR i have no clue. I replaced mine with 2tb drive so no warranty for me anymore. You can always store it and install it later on if you really are conserned about it.

it is not a wrap it is a copper sticker it should act like a heat spreader

I’ve mention in the last video something is wrong with your SSD. I just tried to upload a screenshot using the same software you are but KZfaq keeps deleting it. My SSD max temp is 74c

I tried an M.2 2230 SSD, WD Black SN770M, and it also gave me high temp. Did you remove the foil? I'll try to set you an approved member so maybe you can share a acreenshot link

Some users reported concerning SSD temperatures too and even game crashes due to this. It's strange that Lenovo has never made a statement about it. I tried two drives, one 2242 and one 2230, on the mod cover and original, and used them with different heatsinks. when running CrystalDiskMark I never get less than 90C Could be the controller ?

I would contact lenovo. Your legion go is still under warranty and I would show them the videos and see what they think. You may need a new unit.

@@TECHOSAUR My original 1TB WD drive that came with my Legion go also hit the temperatures you saw. I replaced it with a Kingspec 2TB 2242 ssd with the foil. Now the hotspot doesn't go above the low 70s in crystaldiskmark and high 50's to low 60's when gaming :). It is dual sided so I found that the slim copper piece won't let the case snap back together but it hasn't needed the copper mod at all with that SSD.

You are using the crapiest thermal pad you can get. You need 13mkv thermal pad to work well....that fake pad won't do anything

Good idea. I'll look for a pad with higher specifications. If it works, I'll give an update! But this one seemed like a good one. It states that it's for SSD, GPU memory, and those kinds of mods. I just found out that i have ARCTIC TP-3 in 0.5mm and 1mm used it before on the ALLY SSD and it seemed pretty good, you think i should give it a try with it ?

Lmao....my 8tb gen4 ssd in my ally doesn't get so bad under heavy gaming....😂 done a proper plate modding cooling 👌😋

@@TECHOSAUR 2 mm copper plate cut to size and drilled holes for ventilation. I dis trimmed the inside of the case. Used mkv thermal pads on top of the apu and ssd. Also done a 2 mm custom cut copper heatsink for the ram(this is not connected to heat plate) The plate is like a T shape. I play ghost of tsushima at 30w continuously for hours and I don't go over 80c with 65-70% fans speed. Is amazing 👌
