I do hope Rick and the other writers of the show include more scenes hinting at Nico being gay as well as introducing Will a little bit early. I sort of imagine Nico and Will have known of each other since Titan's curse. And there should definitely be a scene where Will is trying to heal ppl in the battlefield and didn't see a monster heading his way until Nico saves him.

On the topic of Nico's forced outing, I have to break a stand with Rick Riordan. I am not saying that outing someone is a good thing because it is not, but unfortunately is something that happens to a lot of people, and Riordan always has tried to represent real situations young people live. So I believe that's what he's doing, not supporting forced outing lgbtqia+ people but representing a very hurtful and difficult thing some young people has to endure, and that makes him in my eyes braver. Let's not forget that he is not (that we know at this moment) a part of the community, so he has done his research and tried to do it in the less harmfull way so it doesn't become a trigger to his readers while not circuling around a very difficult and hurtful moment.

Let's not forget that even if Riordan didn't plan to let's say 'center' his books on queer youth, when he realized that was the shot that was happening he got on board with it, and I love it. I am a short-of-a-grown up man of nearly thirty and I can't stop reading this, because I feel seen.

I will forever be in debt to the Percy Jackson series and Rick Riordan They're basically the perfect companion to my lifes journey and I can't even imagine how I would have turned out if I hadn't been introduced to them. I'd probably be a lot worse a person. I got the first two books as a christmas present when I was 12, and it gave me the perfect hero. Like Percy, I had massive ADHD, and the books were in english, a second language I wasn't really good at yet, despite having had classes in it since second grade. So obviously, having the hero of the book I'm currently reading having as hard a time reading as I did was a massive confidence boost. But Percy was also cool, always knew what to say, was kind and caring, he was me but better, smarter, cooler. What I could be if I applied myself more. Also, I probably did a full Nico and crushed on him hard without even noticing : ) And I started figuring out I was gay about the time I read the House of Hades, so together with the character I definetly had a crush on at the time, goth boy. Suffice it to say, it was perfect timing. These books were always the perfect companion, and they definetly made me a kinder and more knowledgable person, made me empathise with other perspectives to a degree I don't think I would have achieved without them, and they definitely helped me learn englisch, which led me to even be able to find such lovely people like you.

I remember when Rick tweeted about Reyna being ace, I was SO happy, as an ace myself it was so validating to see a character like me in my favorite book series even if it was only a tweet. But then again I also remember crying my eyes out hours later because a big part of the fandom was being incredibly acephobic, it felt like gaining something and having it ripped away almost instantly, which was hard, after that I completely left the fandom until the news about the disney+ series. It still hurts but I'm trying to move one from that, and hearing you talk positively about Reyna and her aceness really helps! Wonderful video, I really liked it!

Alex is how I figured out I’m genderfluid. I owe feeling comfortable as myself to her. The Percy Jackson series and it’s series in the same universe have impacted me tremendously, but Alex is probably the character who has influenced my life the most by showing me that I can exist and this isn’t weird.

I loved House of Hades and that outing scene. I've always believed that part of the purpose of fiction and telling stories is so that we can learn from the experience. I would never want to be outed the way Nico was but following him through the experience and seeing the positives on the other side (the bad guys will disappear eventually, the people who love you will stick around). I think Rick was very specific in choosing Jason to be that person, he isn't Percy (that would be too much) but he is similar enough that the feelings can still happen. If it were Hazel then Nico wouldn't have built up enough emotional muscle to face Percy later.

Reading Hammer Of Thor at 16 was probably the first time I realized that you *can* be genderfluid or nonbinary or something similar, and while that didn't really have anything to do with me discovering I'm genderqueer 5 years later, it still makes me appreciate Alex even more in hindsight

Another thing worth noting about Nico: Some girl once messaged Rick Riordan through Twitter, asking him to name Nico's girlfriend after her. He sent her back a picture of one of those bear-shaped honey bottles with, "Honey, he gay", written across it.

I love the way Riorden doesn't make every relationship a male to female it makes things more realistic and Likeable. I also really think your explanations for each character you thought was someone who was LGBTQ+ were awesome.

It hasn't been confirmed as far as I'm aware but I love Bliz and Harth in Magnus Chase, they act so much like his parents and I love the whole family dynamic through the books I don't really care if its never confirmed I will go down with this ship along with a majority of the fandom

I'd like to add something as a contributing factor of comphet for Piper. I call this combat romance. I don't know what your experience of violence is or if you have any. If you haven't been in genuine violent scenario where adrenaline messes with your brain and does stuff to you well good for you. The heart thumps, blood flow increases, goosebumps appear. Pupils dilate and expand. Lung passages expand. Your body starts using glucose in different cells. Basically you are high energy and excited. You are excited and happy and ready to go. There's random release of a lot of endorphins (this is designed to block pain signals). By the way I promise adrenaline firing feels like that and if you come through a fight without damage it really feels kind of good. I'm not just a psychopath. Famous quote to support the feeling good in a fight. It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it. Now the good feeling from adrenaline and combat can feel similar to the feeling someone has when they crush on someone. The heart is pumping, they are excited they feel happy. So to rewrite the Pipers original experience. She meets Jason, her memories are messed with to think she loves him. She goes through a lot of chaotic experiences, combat and adrenaline triggers which completes the picture in her mind and gives her a physiological response similar to having a crush on someone when she is around him. There is quiet a few relationships and relationship moments in fiction that I feel comes at least partially because they are around each other a lot when they get adrenal triggers that make them feel good. People therefore think that they are crushing on their battle buddy. Comphet can interact with the adrenaline/crush feeling as people assign the feeling to the person that they feel is supposed to make them feel excited and randomly happy. By the way I see adrenal triggers as partially responsible for Praechel too. The first fee times they meet each other adrenaline is pumping convincing them that they are crushing on each other. More so on Rachel's side as adrenaline shouldn't be a strange feeling to Percy.

As an aromantic asexual myself, I do believe that Reyna’s not only ace, but also aro, even if Rick said otherwise. Yes, she said she had a crush on Jason and later Percy, but she grew up with an abusive father and later on Circe’s island and a pirate ship before she came to Camp Jupiter. The only person she really was close to was Hylla, who I don’t think talked about romance too often with her sister. When she finally came to Camp Jupiter and climbed the ranks, she met Jason. One of the first people who was on the same wavelength with her, was kind to her and not part of her family, was Jason. They formed a strong friendship and how else would Reyna explain wanting to be around him, spending time together and this affectionate and protective feeling she felt for him except for this “love” everyone was talking about? (I’ve been in the same situation, multiple times actually, before I realized I was aromantic, so I know what I’m talking about) Similar thing with Percy, although they had less time to establish a friendship, but I think aesthetic attraction could’ve played a role in that. In Tyrant’s Tomb, she explained to Apollo that she actually tried falling in love. She considered many people of different genders, but it just didn’t click for her. (And if you’re considering Octavian to be your love interest, you really have to be desperate) She also said how uncomfortable it made her that the other campers tried to couple her up, just for the sake of her being in a romantic relationship. In the end, she decides to leave Camp, the environment who wanted her to be in a relationship, to join the Hunters, who don’t do romance. And as we see in the final book, she’s thriving. I don’t think I’ve seen her this happy in any other of the books. And if that doesn’t scream metaphor, I don’t really know. I also would’ve included Aphrodite’s prophecy, but the things you said actually made a lot of sense. I used to think it was just Aphrodite enjoying messing with people’s heads, but I like the thought, that she wanted to encourage Reyna by telling her that she isn’t broken. You know, encouraging her in an Aphrodite kind of way, which includes a lot of existential crisis.

As a person who has just recently realised they're demisexual, I felt this deep in my bones and in my soul. I had crushes in like middle school or the early years of high school, then for years and years... nothing. At the time I just assumed it was because I wasn't confident, I was extremely introverted and I never even got asked out on a date or anything of the sort. Then 2022 came and I decided I would try to go out more and meet more people. I did go on a couple of dates and the guys seemed interesting, but i never felt a thing. Nothing. Just the thought "Well, it would be interesting to get to know him better". No feelings whatsoever. And in the meantime during all these years people have kept asking me wether I had a crush on anyone, wether I had a boyfriend or even just if I thought random guys in the streets looked attactive. And my answer was always no. Maybe the random guys could be good looking but never attractive. Same for the guys I went on dates with. I felt so wrong. How could I not feel anything? There must have been something wrong with me. And during al that time I never realizen I had so much in common with Reyna, because I never saw Aphrodite's prophecy as "No one is going to heal you because YOU'RE NOT BROKEN". God, why couldn't I see it before? It woul have saved me a lot of tears and emotional disdress. And now I'm crying again watching this video because for the first time ever I feel so seen in my struggle. And I know that she is ace and I'm demi so not exactly the same thing, but the struggle is extremely similar and all too real. Thank you for helping mee see what was right in front of mee for years: the answer to a question I didn't even know yet.

Coming back to Alex being a non-binary shapeshifter and it being miiildly problematic, besides her not changing her 'gender appearance' but turning into animals, what also helps is that being a shapeshifter is a children of Loki thing. Samira is cis and also a shapeshifter. So it's not like Rick wrote a "non-binary shapeshifter" and called it a day, he wrote a non-binary daughter/son of Loki, who is also a shapeshifter. I thought that was cool.

My first thing is about Nico and my second is about Will. Nico is more an opinion. Will is an idea for more diversity. My perspective on Nico as a Biromantic Autistic Italian man Nico Di Angelo is one of my favorite characters. Growing up the only openly known Italian characters were awful stereotypes. It was so cool to see a neurodiverse Italian boy with cool powers who has this whole complex history and this amazingly layered innocent bystander to villian to hero story arch. I'm so happy that my little brothers and cousins will now be able to see a live action Nico and feel accurately and positively represented in popular media. Now my thoughts on Will for more diversity. Since the entire 1st series exists that means the TV show can set up things from the start. Will shows up in the last book but the show can show him from the 2nd season since the book insinuated that he'd been there for a while we just hadn't run into him. This will give great opportunity to layer his character to set up his bigger appearances in the next two series. Now my idea of what to change is that he could be Deaf. In my opinion Rick did not write the greatest of Deaf characters but this could be a chance for him to make up for that. My idea is that Will is Deaf and either only communicates to others through ASL or he uses Simcom(Simultaneous Communication)and signs and talks at the same time. I'd be fine with either but if they choose the latter option I want them to cast a boy with a noticeable Deaf accent. And none of the "Super Lip-Reading" powers. Everyone who interacts with him will need to sign for him to understand. This change doesn't hinder or massively divert the series from it's original story while at the same time adding diversity that wasn't there before.

The Trials of Apollo being so unashamedly and casually queer was awesome to read. The series going from having one or two gay characters to being packed full and having an extremely Bi protagonist is epic.

I think it's really funny how Percabeth are not even canonicaly bi but I keep forgetting that 💀 But anyway, I'm really glad that the Riordanverse is soooo diverse in a lot of ways. Of course not every representation in the books is perfect but since I grew up with them I'm thankful nevertheless. My journey was heavily influenced by the Riordanverse. For starters, I'm a trans guy and I found PJO in 5th grade. At that time I was well aware of my gender but my family is very transphobic and at the time I also didn't have friends who could relate so PJO was the only comfort I could find. From the start Percy felt like a brother I never got to have while also being similar to me. Even though he's not my "kin" in the Riordanverse I still chose his name as my new one because without him I wouldn't be here today. So fast-forward to 7th grade when puberty has been kicking my ass for years and slowly all the transphobic remarks were getting to my head. I was trying to convince myself that maybe I was just making everything up. Maybe I wasn't Trans and surely not any other sexuality than hetero. I'd started to realize that I neither only like boys or girls, I liked both equally and it really messed with my life. I had gotten some dear friends but they couldn't help with my awful family either so I was slowly starting to believe it even though I'd cry myself to sleep every single night. But then Magnus Chase came out and I met Alex. The exact character I needed at that time. I identified as genderfluid for I think 7 months and it was truly healing. I could finally get out of that dark hole and accept that it's okay not to feel like a girl sometimes. That's just how it is. In the end I am still a guy and I slowly realized that after finally feeling somewhat comfortable in my body again and I'm really really glad I got to have Alex to help me on my way. During this time I also found out about pansexuality thanks to Magnus and it was a blessing. Finally I understood all my feelings! Somewhere between that I also fell in love with the Kane Chronicles and Carter helped me with the racism aspect of my life. He's the character I actually kin and super comforting to me. All the other representation we got along the way just further solidified my belief that it's 100% okay to be yourself and I'm so happy. I can only say that I'm a trans, omnisexual and polyamorous guy because of the Riordanverse, no matter how some of the representation isn't perfect.

One thing I'm so so happy about with the show coming out is getting fans motivated to make videos like this!! I so thoroughly enjoyed this video and am so excited to see more like this :)

As someone who identified with Percy as a kid (only later figuring out that it was because I'm trans and wanted to BE him, not be WITH him), I've always seen Percy as being Demisexual. Just from the way he didn't fall in love on-sight (simply acknowledged attractiveness and moved on) and grew to love Annabeth as a person before he became interested in her romantically. In my opinion, he only ended up with Annabeth because of how their relationship developed, so he could have easily ended up with a guy if things had gone differently. These books have always been my favorite and I love how Rick has genuinely committed to adding more diversity to his stories.

No gonna lie, I heard you say, "Percy Jackson had a crush on Luke Castellan" and I literally yelled, "YES!" And honestly, based on his I do think that if the books were written in 2015 instead of 2005, then I think we probably would have gotten bi!Percy from the start.

I just finished reading Trials of Apollo and I loved it. So many great characters, so many great moments! Everyone should read it. Also I highly recommend the audiobook because he was a perfect Apollo and really captured the humor of Apollo and the story as a whole.

Would you make a video on your headcanons or characters you think should have been queer in canon? More Nico evidence that people cite/I think you forgot to mention is the Last Olympian river styx thing, which Nico admits to later in Blood of Olympus. I personally believe that that’s when Riordan realized hang on this Nico kid might have a crush on Percy, lemme introduce Will real quick so that Nico can have a future love interest once I get over the censorship. Also one of the earliest things Nico says at Canp Halfblood in Titan’s Curse is ask if Annabeth is Percy’s girlfriend and that read to me that Nico wanted to know if Percy was “available” in a kinda clueless hero-worshipy way. Same with his awe at Apollo (also in Titan’s Curse). Headcanons- Clarisse & Selina. Like come on the whole Patroclys/Achilles moment? If we get season 5/Last Olympian, I lowkey hope that in the TV adaptation Clarisse & Selina don’t date Chris & Charles, or at least they don’t stay/end up admitting feelings to each other before Selina’s death. Also Michael/Octavian- my personal wish is that Nico’s book doesn’t rescue Bob, they help Michael bring back Octavian instead (or also), Eurydice/Orpheus style. Whoops, scratch this very last bit I wrote.

My personal favorite queer headcanon has got to be Maritza from Cemetery Boys. Not only does she kinda flirt with some girls and not there is just have gay vibes, she seems to understand what Yadriel is experiencing as a gay young man. Not only might she be queer representation, but it is also implied that she is a bit heavier/ plus size on top of her Latina heritage. Perfect if you ask me.

Okay, idk if it’s problematic to headcanon villains as lgbtq+, but one of my favorite queer pjo headcanons is trans masc Luke Castellan. I think Hermes might’ve not understood it at first, adding fuel to the fire of Luke’s hatred for Hermes. I also think only Thaila would’ve known out of all the demigods Luke knew, because they were on the run when they were young, and she helped him figure it out.

Not gonna lie I'm still hoping we'll get an openly bi character in one of his books. It's great that Magnus doesn't feel the need to label himself, but there is a complete lack of positive bi+ rep in media so it would be much appreciated. An openly bi character would show that it's okay to label yourself in this way and it's nothing to be ashamed of, as there are a lot of negative bi (particularly w men) stereotypes that often prevent people from coming to terms with their sexuality. Apollo is great and i love him but as you said, Rick didn't create that idea and it isn't an accurate portrayal of many of the struggles bi+ people face.

Piper x Jason platonic ship RIGHTS. I 100% believe she loved him, just not romantically. And that’s okay. I love that for her. Also I’d like to think Jason wasn’t 100% straight and that he’d be happiest in a queer-platonic relationship. Perhaps cupioromantic? Idk but still he gives me nebulously queer vibes. Also as an ace person, I really related to Reyna before figuring out I was ace and even more after. I’m glad she’s ace, and I’m glad that it was subtle in a way because it’s subtle a lot of time when you’re experiencing it. It’s harder to notice a lack of attraction than the presence of it. I just wish it were slightly more clear and confirmed in the books. All in all the queer rep in these books funnily enough evolved in a similar way at a similar rate to my own understanding of my queerness and that’s a fun fact.

So if nico is the ghost king later in the books and… before your a king your a prince so nico is disneys first gay prince 😃

i know this video is a year old atp but i reread the entirety of the camp halfblood series this month and just rewatched this video so- i wanted to add something about reyna. i myself am romantic and asexual and i always read reyna as aroace as well. her monologues about 'feeling broken' and that 'no demigod will ever heal her heart' have never made sense to me in an asexual way. my asexual identity means to me that i do not feel sexual attraction, which has nothing to do with my heart or my feelings - it's the physical aspect of how i experience love you could say. so reyna to me always seemed more aromantic rather than asexual. obviously, I'm not mad at her being 'interpreted' as asexual by rick riordan (because i am ace too - yay representation!) but I've never understood why aromantic wasn't the first label he thought of when writing her. i wonder if it has to do with the lack of information about aro/ace people. it seems to me that many people still fail to understand the difference between romantic and sexual attraction. (although as an author he should be doing research) or maybe i genuinely just misread and misinterpreted her lines in tyrants tomb. anyways i had to get this off my chest. this is a great video and it made me a lesbian!piper stan, so thank you for that - i will forever be indebted to you

nico being outed was completely unnecessary- the point in which nico doesn’t accept himself- could be delt with will as support- in blood of Olympus nico gets a pov- maybe we could have gotten a snippet of him saying that will was attractive- or him being flustered. for the cupid part- jason should’ve been confronted with the idea that “him and pipers relationship started out as a lie- that would’ve reconnected into a part- where nico could support jason. i think the nico outing situation was a lazy way to have him come out.

This may sound strange, but for me, the best part of Reyna's implied asexual representation is knowing that Rick Riordan, a straight, cis, late-boomer-generation person, recognizes and accepts asexuality as a valid sexual orientation. I wish my dad was that open minded. He doesn't seem to accept that I really am asexual. He's given me crap like, "You're just looking for attention", and, "You've got to be attracted to somebody", he's hinted that he's waiting for me to be ready to find a boyfriend, and whenever he brings my sexual orientation up, it's always in a joking manner, as if he's playing along. (When I was about 16 or 17, I told him, "At least you don't have to worry about me getting pregnant before I finish high school!") I don't blame my dad for not understanding, but I feel like he doesn't even try to. I've also been questioning if I'm nonbinary, and he'd absolutely say I'm being "influenced by the woke crowd". It's nice to know Rick Riordan wouldn't judge me. It's sad that someone who doesn't know I exist accepts me more than my own father.

On the topic of nonbinary being a third gender is because most people view gender as a practical matter. Being a man or woman means certain things are expected or that they have something in common. So when it comes to how can someone else practically understand gender it makes sense to understand people as a man woman or other, rather than 1000 different things to understand, having many different categories kind of defeats the purpose of categories.

I do wonder if Rick said Alex was trans at any point as a way of genderfluidity as I've seen people call her trans but as a genderfluid person I've always thought they were quite different. Trans is someone who realises their a different gender to their body and is a very definite permanent thing but genderfluidity is forever shifting and to some extent not really knowing who you are going to be the next day. Not a criticism just personal feelings and wondering if this is how other genderfluid people choose to identify or was a word used by Rick?

I think that if you're gonna be writing a series off of greek mythology you cannot ignore the gays so to speak. I mean greek mythology isn't the best concerning lgbtq rights (the queer rep was mostly m/m) they where better than a lot of mythologies.
