Tasers aren't a replacement for guns and were never intended to be. They're an option for use when there are other people around/behind the person being taken down--it minimizes the risk of harm to everyone else.

“Tazers are inaccurate” yes they are because one some people actually aren’t affected by them and two both tazer prongs have to go in to the skin to make it work so sometimes it doesn’t work specially if someone had thick clothing

My brother is a cop in southside Chicago, he's been working there for the last twelve years and can count the number of times he's had to draw his weapon on one hand, he's never fired it in active duty. Cops are not getting into gunfights with criminals everyday, your average beat cop should not need to be armed with lethal force as they go about their regular duties. By all means have an armed rapid response unit ready to shoot people who are shooting at you, but as it stands policing has created an insular warrior culture where every civilian is a possible threat and the guns come out before a line of dialogue is even established. A cop takes an oath to protect the community, they're consciously acknowledging that the job will be dangerous. If they're only willing to take a chance with someone else's life, and not their own, they don't deserve their shield.

G Washington you are aware that white people murder as well, right? You won't be able to find a murder-free ethnicity, culture, country, region, religion, or any other group that encompasses many people. Trying to spout statistics is nonsensical in this case. You can't justify shooting an unarmed person based solely on the probability that they might be carrying a gun and are dangerous. Precautions are one thing... preemptive shooting is murder.

uhm, Plenty of countries police forces do not carry guns actually. In fact when police do not carry guns, most criminals stop carrying them as well, as they have no reason to. In cases in which guns are involved, they have rapid response teams, basically swat teams which do bring guns.

I like how we say "police in the UK don't have guns, so we shouldn't either!" while ignoring the fact that countries like Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Australia, and Canada DO arm their officers and still have low incidents of wrongful police killings. Maybe would could fix the decentralized mess of a police system in the US and actually fund better training, selection, and broad standards like the rest of the developed world? I believe the true problem with US policing is the fact we have thousands of departments that must operate and fund themselves with pitiful local taxes that result in tough choices between officer numbers, equipment, and training time (often a few months long). More centralized European agencies give their officers double, or even triple the training time thanks to national taxation.

I also think the attitude towards guns should be changed. I always feel really uncomfortable when I hear someone say something like "I'd have shot them" because it shouldn't be that easy to talk about killing or injuring someone. A lot of people who own a gun say it's to protect them and their family, but if someone broke into my house, my first thought wouldn't be to grab a knife from the kitchen or something heavy, in fact I feel uncomfortable even thinking about it, my thoughts would be to go into the bathroom and lock the door or into a room with a window I can climb out or a place to hide. I just don't think that guns should be seen as something to keep you safe. They can be used for that purpose but only if you threaten the one who's trying to harm you or actually injure or kill them, and I don't think those actions should be ones that make you feel safe.

Read up on other police forces. Japanese carry a range of non-lethal weapons that are very effective including a lasso hoop on a stick like animal catchers for grabbing knives and people. They are really good at it. Also they study martial arts and have to stay in shape. And they don't just drive around.

Yeah in a country where it is hard for criminals to get guns and lengthy sentences for being caught with one. The idea of a cop not having a gun in a country that has 100's of millions of guns is absurd.
@hebekiah3623

@Aron M Not necessarily. Can call in the SWAT team which is what they already do whenever there's a gun fight. Where analysis has been done results are universal that cops having more powerful guns endangers the cops (psychologically them thinking they are badass encourages them to make bad decisions - see San Francisco case studies). Keeping up with the criminals doesn't help. Cops riding in cars do nothing to *prevent* crime, car just helps response. Boots on the ground, police walking regular beats, is the #1 thing that lowers crime (often through community involvement). It's been proven time and again even in this country; Baltimore cut crime in half doing it then they had their budget reduced ("no crime, so don't need money" some idiot said). But NRA and Prison industry funded a few cops to sue on the basis of "not feeling safe at work" (I shit you not - and that's the same tactic used on many police departments to force "upgraded" weapons). Here's a Washington Post article that explores that subject wapo.st/2znQayq

@Aron M The 2nd *Amendment* : meaning some goddam liberal changed the constitution! Nobody has talked about taking your guns away, where else will the criminals get them? And what militia are you a part of? _Accepting money from industries:_ Rockefeller said "he who pays the piper calls the tune" warning groups about accepting money. The problem is their corporate PR churns out the lines y'all repeat, they write the narrative, get the articles in the papers that can co-opt a legitimate grass roots movement. NRA is backed by weapons companies, just like our Congress. 2014 big rise in contributions from small donors to $945K out of their total $22 million operating fund, that doesn't include their $350 million PAC and estimated $180 million given to politicians on their behalf. That's $552 million, so *regular donors made up* *0.17% of the total* . You didn't follow up "nerve to bring up the prison industry" with anything. Didn't realize it is a nervy thing to discuss. Should I be scared? And we are a socialist country, that's what most of the Constitution was about, protecting _we the people_ from aristocratic (capitalist, that's what they were, because "capital" means wealth, not free trade) control. Corporations were banned in the Constitution unless specifically authorized for a specific task that was for 1 year, later 2, then 3, railroads got 7, then weapons companies got an ongoing status as long as we were in a "state of preparedness" for war. Oil companies were included as essential to preparedness. Then they got their friends in, and so on. Founders realized how dangerous it was (no humans responsible or punishable) in allowing moral responsibility to be set aside under the fiction of incorporation. It won't be easy to change the violence in our culture. It will take many things including you who say you believe guns=freedom. What about life, liberty, pursuit of happiness? Better than guns any day as a definition of freedom. *Economic inequality* , gap between rich and everyone else, corporate officers making 420 times what average employee gets, is the source of crime and violence. They need the guns to retain their fortunes, you want a gun to keep the scrap of a scrap you have left. All this has been proven knowledge for a hundred years (read any anthropologist or cultural analyst from 1900 on). They divide the poor (everyone but that very few) into competing camps so we all yell at each other. The "Middle Class" was always defined as those who served and implemented the interests of the wealthy; how we think of middle class only existed for a brief time, seriously from 1950-1980 (credit cards came in and though we had the trappings, the stuff, of a prosperous people, the clock of mounting debt was ticking). All labor rights you/we have were won from 1900-1940 by "Communists" here in America. The labor protests, collective action to guarantee rights (gov't's job but they were bought off so not doing it), were all accomplished by your socialists (and fire departments, police departments, schools, parks, etc). You screaming socialist like it's a bad word only means you've bought the line the rich have fed you. And every single wealthy family has made its money by ripping off the government, us. Look it up. They want a small government, one with no oversight, inspectors, regulation for public safety, *just check writers* and plenty of them. This is the most communist/socialist country that ever existed but it works for corporate welfare only. Check it all for yourself. Don't have to believe anything, just follow the money. Put down your gun and get out your calculator.

For anyone wishing to participate in a fact-based discussion. The UK police do not typically have guns. (They have a SWAT like group that does have guns, when they’re called in for SWAT duty.) Most UK cops don’t even want guns. Following the London Bridge attack, this is the coverage: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jun/03/london-bridge-closed-after-serious-police-incident-reports note how every time the cops being referred to are armed, it calls them “armed police,” that’s because “police” are not typically armed. Now on to another country that _does_ arm it’s police. Germany arms its police in general. However, if they draw their weapon, shoot a round, hit someone or kill someone, the event is investigated by _a different police department_, and they investigate it fully as a crime. Somehow, Germany manages to not fall into anarchy, even though the sum total of German police dealing with 88 million people, collectively shoot less rounds _at people_, than people are shot dead by police in Albuquerque _alone_, a population of 1 million. This means that your odds of being shot to death in Albuquerque are 88 times higher than being shot _at_ (without injury) by German police. And to finish up with, the 2nd most gun-having country in the world is Switzerland. Switzerland guarantees all people a right to life which cannot just be… you know… taken away because a cop gets scared. In Switzerland, _all_ fatal police shootings are investigated as murder, and go to trial. They did, after all, deprive a person of their right to life at the very least. Which I think the US described once as “inalienable” which in Common Law means that this right cannot in any way be removed, stripped, or taken away from someone. You know… just to point out the weird of shooting 2 people a day by police after declaring your independence by claiming that people have a right to life, that cannot be taken away from them in an way… So, _anyways_, to point out how serious they are about this, there was a mass shooting going on… (yes, Switzerland, like the US suffers from mass shootings. Less often than the US, because less guns, but with 2nd most gun ownership, you end up getting 2nd most mass shootings.) …so, this mass shooting is going on, and the guy is actively shooting at people and presenting a clear and imminent danger to other people’s lives (i.e. US troops could have shot him.) the commander, eventually ordered his subordinates to use lethal force. They ended up killing the guy. Murder-spree stopped… And then they put the police commander who gave the order to use lethal force on trial for murder. They went through the whole process, and a jury of his peers found that he had been justified. So, despite the law being clear that all intentional homicide is murder, PERIOD, their legal system permits that exceptions will sometimes occur. The point here is still: he went to a murder trial for killing someone on a shooting spree. This is what an “inalienable right to life” looks like.

If you kill someone in the US, you still get investigated by law enforcement to determine if there was a justifiable use of force. If there is a determination that you did act unjustifiably, you will be charged with murder or in some cases, manslaughter. Stop being stupid.

There's a good episode from 99 percent invisible that talks about the origins of the taser. Long story short, LAPD implemented it to replace the gun in live threatening situations, after they shot some lady with a knife. It's, instead, become something officers use whenever a perp flunks the attitude test, which is not only not a live threatening situation but it's not a crime. What he said in the video is a bit uninformed. Police officers should have guns in their tool belt, but the role of the taser should be reevaluated, and in that regard he isn't far off.

My mom's uncle used to be a police officer, over 20 years. Loved his job, loved helping people, he was a respected man and officer who saw using his gun as the LAST resort. The one time he did have to use his gun, another guy pulled a gun on him first. My mom's uncle used the gun as protection and shot him, he later died. He was so upset, so ASHAMED that he took a life he didn't believe he was worthy of being a police officer anymore. It was justified and he didn't go to jail, but soon after he put away his badge and quit the team. He saw himself as unworthy, he swore to protect lives and he ended one. That is how police officers should feel, they shouldn't treat it like "just another day on the job" these are people's lives. We're never going to get away from guns, at least not anytime soon, so police need them. But can we PLEASE stop acting like they're the only option. Police offices are trained for a reason, they have tasers and such for a reason. Also they need to be held accountable for their actions. police officers are important, but not all of them are as great as we like to believe they are. Most are great, but not all, just like regular people. Those officers who aren't great and don't bring honor to their badge and the lives they protect need to be held accountable for their actions.

Glad you asked. Many European countries have single digit or even zero cops killing people every year and manage to be just as effective at stopping crime as American cops who shot over 1000 people in 2017. How do they do it? Let's look at your example of when a cop would NEED to shoot someone: It's wrong, you're wrong, and I can't believe you are this dumb. Beat cops don't charge in and bust up hostage situations in the first place. A hostage negotiation is handled by, yes, negotiation. Talking it out. They do exactly the thing you find so absurd. And you know what? Most other crimes can be handled this way. And are. Effectively. In lots of countries that aren't this one. This isn't some hypothetical situation, we can look at loads of examples of cops managing to not execute anyone in the streets and not be ANY less effective because of it. Google it. You moron.

Make tasers better? That's your solution? You know that this is well within the interest of the current system, right? There could be a solid case for patrol officers having no on-body firearms on a regular basis, as is the case in many European countries, but as of yet, this is not possible, due to the amount of firearms in the US. They'd be underequipped without a gun at hand. Sadly. This is not the case in most European countries. Additionally, it is obviously this prevalence of firearms in the US culture that results in police being trained to shoot so quickly. European countries in which police DO carry firearms also have much lower shooting rates than the US because the training is focussed much less on using the duty weapon. So uh... You won't be able to achieve either goal until you've fixed your gun problem. Sorry, but in a country like that, I'd want to carry. As would everyone. The law has to change first, THEN the training can change, and THEN, if all works out well, firearms can be phased out more and more. But uh... Make tasers better? I'm sorry, but you can't just assume that this would be possible. They work by inflicting pain. Sometimes people do not respond to pain. That's it. There's no way to physically stun someone without causing harm to them. Heck, even shooting them with bullets rarely stops them on the spot. Certainly, the invention of the ultimate non-lethal weapon that rarely fails and never kills would solve this problem, but why would the police NOT want this? Why would the companies producing tasers and such NOT want to achieve this right now? They do. And if there's any obstacle, it's your gun lobby, Murica. Here's the plan, US, in this order: -> Fix gun culture to no longer encourage every citizen to have a firearm. -> Fix the laws to prevent dangerous and unstable people from owning, and 99% of regular people from carrying guns (excl. hunters, police, security etc who are ON DUTY) -> Fix police training to adapt to the new non-all-out-war situation -> Then, if you STILL somehow have this many police shootings, put their guns in their cars. Keep them for SWAT, but greatly increase their training and reduce their numbers. -> Most importantly: Never put someone with a heart problem into a shock position, i.e. with their legs up. This has nothing to do with anything, but it is good advice, and most people have taken too few first aid classes. Just saying.

Spec oh my god. You just completely missed his argument. Amazing. The whole argument is that if there's anyone who shouldn't have guns, it's cops. Because they're not supposed to shoot people. They're supposed to do the opposite. Just make a stunner.
@NamelessBody
@NamelessBody 7 жыл бұрын
I understand the argument. It's just based on the assumption that you can just make a magical stunner that never fails. A taser works based on pain and does not 'stun' by magical force. It can cause some muscle contractions, but you can't increase that effect, otherwise you'll have trouble with the heart, which is also a muscle, and there's already people dying of cardiac arrest by taser (arguably. It seems to require specific circumstances such as preexisting conditions). If you make the taser any more powerful, you've now invented the defibrillator. Fun fact: Defibritasers are already a thing. Somehow. Anyway, it just doesn't work like that. Noone has yet invented a method to quickly send someone into a state that is a) completely rendering him unable to act and b) non-lethal. It might not be possible. Sure, it's being worked on, as we speak. By companies who want to sell to the police. So this request is already being fulfilled, as was my argument. But so far, they haven't come up with anything, so any argument based on this are moot: 1) Do research! - This is moot because there's already people working on this, and the government WANTS that already. 2) Just make it! - This is moot because the research has not come up with a solution yet. There's noise-based devices, light-based devices, pain-based devices, muscle contraction based devices, heck, even net-based devices, but none have yet been proven to work nearly as well as a firearm. The taser might be the closest thing we have, and a thick jacket, drugs and/or a stubborn enough person are all it takes to defeat it. Yes, train police better so they use their tasers more often than their guns. But this first requires changes in society. Edit: For reference: I'm from a country in which the police have a reputation to rarely ever shoot, whenever anyone gets shot by a cop it makes immediate national news, even when absolutely clearly justified, such as a person running at an officer with an axe. People request tasers to replace guns here, too, but not based on lots of black people dying, but on random lunatics with axes dying. We have no gun problem. We still have cops on guns. It works.
@kaydb42
@kaydb42 7 жыл бұрын
Spec I love your response! I've tried to bring up these points before, the American gun culture that promotes a "shoot first, ask questions later," mentality. The ideas that flourish in society are going to hang around in your police agencies, because...your cops are civilians from your society. Along with that, cops are scared because people are scared of them, and people are scared of cops because cops are scared of them... a looping circle of fear resulting in trigger-happy cops and people too scared to do what they're told, or act erratically around police (even if they're not doing anything wrong). I work in law enforcement, and I've had calls from citizens terrified because the cops were knocking on their door..."What do I do?!??" Well, answer it...not answering it is making them more suspicious, like you could be hiding something. That's just one example. There's a name for the cycle that feeds itself like that, but I can't think of it :/ More and better training is always a plus, of course, and body cameras are loved by cops that don't plan on violating any rights. But finding more effective, non-lethal weapons has been at all the conventions, trying to sell tech to save lives and stop crime. The chiefs and other brass go to those sort of things and bring back a few new things to try all the time...but during the trials, they find it being less effective in some way or other against the possibility of the other person having a gun. Of course, the NRA is also at all of those conventions, selling "even better" guns, and holding cops by the balls really - most cops that I know are proud NRA members and gun rights...enthusiasts? They're not really activists...they just support it, yet fear everyone having them, but think it's their right to have them...but...they'll shoot you for having them. Hey, I think it's another one of those cycles! And it's all so very complicated...

What threat are law enforcement officers to law-breaking, potentially mentally/socially insane, criminals whenever you only arm officers with non-lethals? Why would someone, who has no respect for the law or their fellow human being, have a reason to take a police officer seriously whenever they themselves are armed with a gun, and an officer isn't? Don't get me wrong, non lethal weapons should by all means be improved on to be more accurate and reliable, and police officers should be better trained to rely on those first, only to pull out their gun when they can confirm that their target is armed with a lethal weapon themselves , and again, better trained to discern the difference between those situations. Lives could have been spared if certain cops were to use a taser on a suspect that they thought were reaching for a gun, but truthfully weren't. Same goes for the dogs/animals you mentioned. However, to disarm our officers in such a way would sentence them to near certain death because now criminals will know not to fear the cops, and will be all the more open and safe to pursue their nefarious endeavors. Even a crappy gun has much better range than any taser you can make. Rubber bullets won't incapacitate their target. It'll hurt like a bitch, but it's not stopping anyone from pulling out their real gun. Pepper spray, like a taser, requires you to be up close and personal with your target, compared to how far a gun will be accurate. Granted, most police encounters that end in unjust death are indeed up close and personal, and so non-lethals would have be effective. So while that is a fair point in favor for anti-gun enthusiasts, the fact remains that police offers need to be able to protect themselves against the more dangerous criminals in these life or death situations. Taking guns away from the officers isn't going to fix the problem of people dying, the balance will simply shift to where more officers will be killed instead. What many anti-gun people fail to realize is that guns are, at their core, tools that are being misused. Guns are not inherently evil or dangerous, it's the people that misuse them that are evil, or at the very least, untrained. A hammer or saw or ax or a fucking standard kitchen knife can be dangerous in the wrong hands just like a gun can, yet we don't require a permit or license to buy any of those things. Hell I don't think there is even an age restriction for buying a lot of those things, at least not where I live. Officers need to be armed, but not just with a gun. They need to be armed with reliable non-lethals, and the knowledge and training for when and how to use their tools. You wouldn't hold the sharp end of a saw to drive in a nail would you? Of course not. So while officers need to learn to use non-lethals against suspects that have not displayed any legitimate threat, they also need to have the right tool for the job on their belt when they encounter a dangerous criminal.

Because the only reason why we are an independent nation, that combated the greatest military presence ever before seen in history is because men of all ages had guns in their homes. The first thing any tyrannical government does is remove guns from the populous, this is something that has been repeated time and time again throughout history. But to get less abstract, the United States and its founders realized that the only means of protecting ones personal freedoms from oppression and those who wish to do harm is to be armed. If you want an idea of what these regressive policies that people like Bernie Sanders and Debbie Wassermann Schultz are pushing I suggest you read the book 1984 written by George Orwell in 1948 the similarities are profound.

Cops without guns really... really? Any writer involved in this segment has no family or friends that serve as a police officer. Of course they are trained not to hesitate in the event they feel their life is threatened. The moment they do they lose that fight and don't go home that day. Anyone who disagrees with that has never been in that situation nor have gone through that training and really has no room or ground to argue that. Its horrible that some people have been killed but a lot of these situations can be avoided if people simply listened to the police officer and speak with them.

there are actually non-lethal bullets for guns most commonly made out of rubber, plastic, wax, or wood. Wax bullets have been around for over a century and are designed to be fired at a low velocity for things such as indoor shooting ranges where high velocity lead is not the best idea. Rubber bullets were first invented by the British for crowd control, but can still be lethal in some instances. Plastic bullets were also invented by the British as a replacement for rubber bullets to try and cut down on the risk of accidentally killing people, but can still be lethal if misused. Wooden bullets were once again first used by the British, are designed to cause pain (welts and bruises) as opposed to being designed kill, and are still used by some US police forces for crowd control.

It may seem like a ridiculous idea to suggest that cops should not have guns, but using powder to propel stuff out of tubes to kill people has been a thing for centuries now. We can certainly do better, and there are technologies that could replace them that we should be investing in or testing out as replacements in some police precincts.

Cops do have Tasers. Remember the one guy who was shot by a cop who thought he was firing his Taser, but it was really an actual gun?

A number of years ago, I ran across a report on a new technology that would perfectly aid cops in avoiding the use of guns. Being developed in San Diego, California, this was the next step in tasers. It pushed low voltage instead of high, thus locking up voluntary muscles over putting a person in a simulated electric chair. It rode on a laser beam and could penetrate clothes. Imagine that! The laser scope of a gun, turning a fleeing felon or aggressive dog into a living statue. Perfect for cops with safety needs, convenience store clerks or prankster gags! A non-lethal weapon with pinpoint accuracy. Prototypes may have cost over ten grand. But, had this gone into mass production, Wolfy may have lived the encounter with officer shoot's-a-lot.

he makes a good point. If we can afford a few billion dollars for military spending (instead of say... better education, food, utility, or roads) why the hell cant we make a taser that works outside of 4 feet?

Someone needs to invent the glow sticks from _Demolition Man_. Of course, we'll have to do something to make sure that Wesley Snipes is kept under control, but we can always give Stallone some HGH and he can protect us.

Thank you thank you for this. Many nations have had great success with police not having constant sidearms. Approval rate is 78% among police officers in those places (while it's interesting that 40% or more of other people think they should be armed). In 1995 San Francisco was sued into moving from revolvers to semi-automatic weapons by a few people who protested job safety as the reason (though later found that they were teased by others for having "small guns"). All studies have reported zero effect on officer safety and the reverse, increased harm to police as a result because it was mostly psychological, cops felt "tougher", and were more likely to escalate situations as well as continuing an arms race with criminals. Also, semi-automatics are less accurate, especially firing repeatedly and marksmanship requirements went from 50 yards to 25, on-target from 80% to 30%. Five European nations have unarmed police, couple others keep theirs in the car, Japan and others that carry them don't have them upfront and so visible and are highly trained in non-lethal methods. They also do the one thing in movies ours don't do anymore: fire for effect (a shot in the air) to warn suspects that they will shoot. Check wikipedia, 95% of shots fired in most "modern" countries was for effect and not at anyone. Some places less than 0.3% at another human being. And their cops are much safer. "I feared for my safety" is not legitimate legal excuse by the way, it only works on juries who are led to to believe that their statement of fear equals "imminent danger to life of officer or other people". By most department's regulations they aren't even allowed to draw their weapon or point them unless certain conditions are met because the 4th Amendment prohibits unreasonable seizure. Pointing a gun or ordering on the ground is a seizure. This has been repeatedly clarified (and violated) for the last 30 years to mean it is only permissible depending on: • The severity of the crime at issue; • Whether the suspect poses an immediate threat to the safety of the officers or others; and • Whether the suspect is actively resisting arrest or attempting to evade arrest by flight. www.patc.com/weeklyarticles/print/7th_pointing_gun.pdf Of course this is largely ignored and not mentioned in news stories.

Cops in Japan have martial arts training. They can incapacitate people and carry them away with only bruises and maybe a broken bones in some cases. The problem is there are so many guns in the US, it's much easier for less connected criminals to have some and more likely that someone will. Also we should have people who record broadway bootlegs record secret news meetings. They seem to have a special power that keeps them from getting caught.

One of the problems with trying to change the police in the US now is how the NRA (and others) have cultivated this imagine of to be American is to be armed so there are literally so many guns in America, it's why you couldn't instantly switch to the UK model because even before we made handguns and most rifles illegal they weren't massively common so recalling them wasn't too bad.

Idk if cops not having Guns in the US would be a good idea or not. But all I know is in at least the UK, New Zealand and Australia none of our cops carry guns on them permanently. They have them in their cars and only bring them out if there is a legitimate reason to think they might need them. I personally prefer that style, than having a gun by their side all the time.

As a Canadian, I'm really uncomfortable with him getting a free pass as a progressive dreamboat on the world stage. He's quite good at crafting a self-image that is completely at odds with his actual policies.
