This also ignores the fact that (at minimum) Don Jr, Kusher and Manafort all knew that Russia was trying to aid them in the election. I still don't understand what the problem is. A candidate (or someone close to, or a representative of a candidate) is offered damaging information about their opponent. Regardless of what party the candidate is from, or who it is that offered the information. Obama would've accepted negative information about Mitt Romney or John McCain. A journalist would have extended an invitation to the Trump administration to offer a comment in response to the allegations included in the story. Presumably, the administration would have declined, lied, or said something they've already said but it's standard journalistic practice to offer a chance to respond to a story that includes allegations.

In the conservative parts of the country it's the *nothing to see here* routine because the conservative media is mostly ignoring the story in fear losing viewership since they supported Trump so hard and pushed themselves in a corner. I think the OP is more saying that the US should have done, and ought to do more to enforce certain standards of justice and freedom, pursuing ideological interests over economic interests. A Russia that had been better reprimanded over its crimes against humanity might not have had the confidence or energy to make such brazen moves against its rivals. A world that hadn't experienced so many decades of democracies swept aside by dictators when it suited US corporate interests might have been better poised to resist this weird cultural regression sweeping across the West.

I think the US is somewhat corrupt (or has structures that skew things in lieu of corruption proper), but it might have a better media landscape (in terms of somewhat varied ownership) and term limits. I think a decent portion of the press and public openly hating any current government speaks to some level of health of democracy.
