In the mid-2000s, a superheroTV show by the name of Heroes took the world by storm.
With its cast of enjoyable characters, superheroes and intriguing plot, Heroes seemed to be on track to becoming a classic. Yet this would not come to pass and in this episode, we discuss how the show came to be. How it started before the fall of Heroes took place.
Core Ideas is a channel dedicated to video essays detailing what makes your favorite media work. From Teen Titans to Star Wars, no topic is off limits.

Heroes S1 was awesome. Then, writer's strike. It never captured the magic of that first season again. They shouldn't have brought Sylar back so soon(if at all), and they shouldn't have de-powered Peter. Also the fights between Peter and Sylar were never really shown, which annoyed people.

The first season should have been the end of that story for those characters. They had arcs and it felt like an end for them. Sylar and Peter was always opposites, so if they killed one, the had to kill the other, IMO. This is kinda why I hate ratings because Heroes was the perfect example of a show that should have been 1 season...

Season 1 was SO magical ... Heroes was best when the characters still had mystery ... when we longed to see them unite, but they were still thousands of miles apart and still learning about what they could do. When Sylar was a dark force of nature who killed relentlessly. When Peter was a lovable nobody with a huge destiny. It was almost TOO good at the early stages ... and it would have been SO difficult to maintain that brilliance.

@@MrSecretSentai Smallville's biggest issue is it didn't know when to change its status quo at a good time (Clark/Lana, Clark on the farm) and when it did, the budget wasn't nearly as good as Seasons 3-5. Heroes on the other hand made changes too soon, IMO.
@rmsgrey
@rmsgrey 5 жыл бұрын
@@mattb6369 Biggest issue of early Smallville to my mind is that the writers kept wanting to put their own twist on the characters and explore another side of Superman and Lex Luthor, but were constrained (either internally or by edicts from DC) to have Clark be heroic and Lex be villainous. So you'd have episodes where Clark is consistently a jerk about everything, and Lex is kind, generous, helpful and generally virtuous, but other characters constantly talk about how virtuous and heroic Clark is, while Lex is clearly villainous. And then every 4-5 episodes or so, as the characters develop too far away from the DC template, they'd silently reset to baseline for no apparent reason - abandoning the character development from the previous episodes. And then there's Lana Lang - the school's golden girl with a tragic backstory tied to our hero, who also successfully runs a small business and whom everyone is in love with. Maybe if I found her as attractive as the writers clearly did, it'd be different, but I don't, so she comes across as an annoying Mary Sue instead. Later seasons - without Lana and with character development allowed to stick rather than being teased and discarded - got better again.

Now that I think about it, quite a number of people were critical about Niki's character, but I personally found her to be the most interesting of 'em all, especially with the wonderful Ali Larter playing her. I was greatly disappointed that her character came to such an anticlimactic close. Then again, such a lackluster ending to her character arc seems to be a running trend for this show.

"More of a character drama WITH superheroes, than a show about superheroes." What ruined the later seasons for me was them losing sight of this concept. They'd always try to bring the characters back to square one at the start of each season, but by episode 2 they may as well have been the X-men in all but the name and costumes.

Heroes is the textbook example to authors (Brandon Sanderson talks about this IIRC) of being conscious of the promises you're making to your readers (or viewers in this case). The promises they were (implicitly and explicitly) making were that we'd see the coming together of these awesome characters as force for good and we'd get to see the growth into awesomeness of Peter and Hiro. Instead, the "team" illogically fractures after season 1 and Peter and Hiro never live up to the small glimpses of badassness that we get teased with.

Same format as Black Mirror, Twilight Zone, steven spielberg's amazing stories etc, but with comic book characters. Justice League action kinda did this quite well. Titans is kinda doing it now. I actually think Marvel should do a Defenders show in this style. One episode for Luke, Matt, Jessica, Misty, etc. Even do villain eps with Kingpin, Bullseye. I'd even watch a day in the life of Turk. Great vid. Subbed. Look forward to the 2nd part.

Matts story was one of the best in season 1. Maybe should have backed him as the main character for season 2. Cop/psychic tracking and saving people with powers from the company. The writers behind Heroes apparently gave all they got in the first season. From then it went downhill - which was a pretty sad thing. And I do believe that most characters were versions of known X-men : Peter Petrelli had similar powers to Rogue. Claire Bennet had Wolverine's healing powers. Hiro Nakamura was an expansion of the ideas behind NightCrawler. Matt Parkman was a mind reader not unlike Professor X. Nathan Petrelli could fly like X-men's Angel. And there's a now classic episode where future Hiro goes back in time which reminded me a lot of X-men : Days of Future Past comic books. First season? 9/10 on my book.

I just finished the show. I think 2 key ingredients that made it successful were: 1) The mystery/thrill element. The whole mystery/excitement of who or how new york blows up and hows isaac's paintings affect the future of our characters was so intriguing. It was always gonna make viewers glued to their tvs. Although s3 part 1 did try to maintain the mystery with Arthur Petrelli/the company , the mystery was no longer impactful. 2)The second element was chemistry of the characters working together. When you introduce a show with a unique set of characters, its vital that these characters spent time together just like how LOST did. After s1 we rarely saw that. There should have focused more on friendships between hiro-claire or peter-claire or hiro-nathan or matt-noah or even mohinder-nathan. At the start of later season each of these characters would start where they left off and it was annoying. Other big blunders: One of the biggest blunders was making peter claire's uncle. In a show like this you should have a main couple. peter and claire were perfect. what was the point of making nathan claire father? they hardly developed that relationship. Making sylar take claire;s power ruined the series as there was no way to kill him. Tension is gone. So neither the villain nor the hero could die. Sylar was ultra OP and should have not stayed beyond season Taking away peters and hiro;s powers was also dumb. Like you already made a blunder by making the villain op. so now you take away the powers 2 heroes that can actually stop him?
@ballsofsalsa01
@ballsofsalsa01 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, bc Peter was a Gary stue, a Mary Sue, he could do everything already, much more than sylar In case u didn't notice, sylar wasn't rly invincible, he just put fear in others and never went against more then 1-2 heroes at a time. Peter stopping time was invincible, having all powers and no drawbacks like having to open the skull to read or having allies
@hasan_1888
@hasan_1888 Жыл бұрын
@@ballsofsalsa01 in case you forget, slyar became immortal when he took claires powers. he became the true mary sue. in case you forgot, after s3 peter could only take 1 power at a time and THAT ruined the show.
@ballsofsalsa01
@ballsofsalsa01 Жыл бұрын
@@hasan_1888 polar opposite. I'm watching the series right now, my memories are much fresher than yours bud, and hell no, Peter was even more OP than Sylar during S2, with all powers permanently absorbed without the drawback of having to kill the person or taking their powers away, and Sylar could never stop time or become invisible, Peter could do both. Sylar with all his power, never actually faced more than 2 at the same time. Meanwhile, Peter went into the base with Future Hiro and fycked the entire squad Peter was like a smarter Arthur Petrelli, even more OP, that shit would have rendered any villain or situation pointless, thank God it didn't last long And like what happened in s3, they can be killed, or maybe it's a plothole but Arthur died with just a bullet and the Haitian

@@ballsofsalsa01 lol and i just rewatched the whole show 2 weeks ago. so its kinda a stupid of think about "memory fresh". sylar did not need to stop time. in case you missed sylar became immortal. you know what immortal means right? no sylar could never be killed. like it or not but the fact remains keeping sylar alive was pathetic writing. he killed so many innocent people and the writers made him a good guy in the end of s4🤣

....and sadly....it was all down hill from S1 onward. I watched Heroes back when it first aired. I stuck with it for quite a while until somewhere in S4. This isn't to say post-S1 Heroes didn't still have some good moments or intriguing character development, but they were always fleeting. It's a shame because the show had such a good cast but they were just given such bad scripts. After the while Heroes starting taking on the worst traits of both television shows AND comics. Haha!!

@@greg20067 Man...I remember being so pissed off how during the entirety of S3 they were building-up to Sylar turning a new leaf only to completely throw it away in the season finale when he kills his love interest. They did that a lot with Claire too with her "balancing superpowers with a normal life" conflicts. The show just kept hitting the fucking reset button!! But then again, I should have saw trouble coming during that bullshit filler subplot they had for Matt in S2 were he spent a few ep following a goddam turtle across the desert. Haha!!

I didn't dislike season 2 as much as most folks. Despite my short attention span I don't necessarily mind the slowing of pace of a show as long as it has a good and palpably preconceived payoff. Season 3 was what did it for me to drop it. What irked me most was how they ruined Mohinder's character by turning him into a superpowered villain. The dynamic between the superpowered and regular people was one of the most compelling things about the show and they hung, drew and quartered it.

Heroes was the best series of all time, up to now I haven't seen a series with live action heroes ad the interwoven characters! That interconnection between the characters and how they pushed their stories to unfold the over arching plot just got me. I was hooked and since then no show has really satisfied my itch! #bringbackhero...

Christmas morning, 2008. I was watching an episode of "Heroes" on a DVD I had rented from Blockbuster. At 8:20, the call came. My mother had passed away. I finished watching the show. Why not? She wasn't going anywhere. I finished my prep and drove to the physical therapy center she was located. Along the way, I observed homes and churches full of people, celebrating the yuletide. When at Zephyr Haven, I knelt by my mother's death bed and read from 1 Corenthiens 13, which I refer to as the Love Verses. As you can imagine, the next few days were a blur. I had to contact the local funeral home. I had to make arrangements for the final disposition of my mother's remains. She didn't leave a will, but she had often expressed a desire to be creamated. It's been 14 years. My sister was supposed to return to Florida to aid me in completing this task. She will not. So it's up to me.

That first season was amazing..inspired..it was a shame that writers strike and restructuring with new writers with different visions...later seasons lost the direction and never were able to get back on track. I only watch the first season because it's all you need to understand. It might have been better if each season is it's own story. If the Pettrellis died saving New York it would have set a sense of gravitas that focused on sacrifice is the hallmark of heroes while destruction is the result of the Villain. Order and Chaos served by normal people with abnormal abilities. The first season demonstrated this beautifully.

This show had been an important part of my life in some way. Sure it was one of the first TV show I watched from start to end, even though we only had the first two at the time. The thing with Heroes was that it's the first show I watched in English with subtitle and ever since, I couldn't watch a show or movie dubbed. Now I'm able to have conversations in English, watch video from anywhere in the world and understand it. It opened a lot of doors for me. It's frustrating to see what happened to it. I wish it kept going with the good writing it had in the beginning. And Zachary Quinto... What a performance. Considering it was the first show where the way actors say their lines is part of the performance to. Until then I could only appreciate the visuals, with the vocals done by an entirely different person who doesn't always portray the character right. Voice actors make weird choices in my country, and now I can't get back to it. I want to full picture brought by the actor, whether it's in a language I can understand (French/English) or not (Japanese/German/etc.). Cheers from France! 🍻

I don't know. I grew up watching Heroes as it was on air (I'm 17 this September) and I never disliked the following seasons. As long as the cast was okay with the other seasons I am too. It's one of my favorite series of all time and although I do feel the shift from the 1st to 2nd season and etc. I don't think it was a bad shift. Also, I love Sylar becoming good and then becoming Nathan. CRAZY. The only thing I can think of that I didn't like about the show is the huuuge nerf on Peter. I wish they kept him as OP as he was in S1 and then had Sylar become evil again sooner.

It feels like it inspired the boys and other super human society’s but in a more realistic sense that these people don’t just get to go running around doing what they want without consequences. I also think it laid the groundwork for current day super hero shows we’re getting today with an overarching story following multiple characters and long frame episodes. Me and my dad used to sit down once a week to watch the new episode however I don’t remember it coming to a proper ending but what the story was able to work it’s way up to was so amazing imo
