Out of all the indie films to come out in the last few years, Ruby Sparks aimed to be different. A deconstruction of the genre's own tropes, it discussed how insecurities can lead to disturbing traits. As well as a slightly cautionary tale on how to avoid them.
Core Ideas is a channel dedicated to video essays detailing what makes your favorite media work. From Bo Burnham to Star Wars, no topic is off limits.

The main reason that Calvin decided to go to his Mum’s for the weekend was to stop Ruby from wanting to get a job for herself. He wanted to keep her with him at all times and stop her from getting her own life. Like she says, he doesn’t want her doing anything.

Great 👍 I was afraid no one would mention his incorrect assumption. The actual reason is actually worse than his take.

The weekend in Big Sur was a good opportunity to see the real character of Calvin. He was incredibly disrespectful and demanding to Mort in his own house. Even though Mort considered him as a son and was pround of him.

5:55 There's something poetic about how Ruby's entire existence stems from being Calvin's perfect 'not like other girls' girlfriend, but if given even the slightest amount of agency would not choose to be Calvin's girlfriend.

The part where he makes her say "I love you, ill never leave you" means too me that you just want to hear what you want to hear even if it's a lie you make yourself believe that.

Do men feel as disturbed by this movie as women do? The way he controls her gave me anxiety. It's so obvious what she wants and if he simply gave it to her, fulfilled her wishes, discussed, communicated and sometimes compromised, they could have been happy. However, he chooses to withhold everything she wants from her, treats her like an object, demeans and humiliates her. There were some scenes where I would get reminded of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and 500 Days of Summer (2009). I admire Paul Dano so much for being in this film. @CoreIdeasI loved this video essay, thank you so much!

I think one of the themes in the movie had to do with control. Watching it for the first time, I was so relieved when he said he’ll never write about her again towards the beginning of the film. Later when he decided to do it, I found myself screaming at Calvin not to control her. If only he had recognized the problems and tried to mend their relationship in a healthy way, they could have been happy. The best example of how being controlling is frankly disgusting was the scene where he showed her the book and forced her to watch as he controlled her.

It was disturbing for me, and I don't know whether or not I like the ending. Because it seems like he didn't treat his last girlfriend quite right judging by their exchange outside the bathroom. I don't think it was abusive, but she clearly remembers leaving because of something he did,or was doing. And he seemed to have rationalized whatever he did by telling himself "she left when I was distraught due to my dad's death". This knowledge makes me think that he might have not learned his lesson

of course I do kind of wish he didn't get ruby back in the end i think the movie was at its best when Calvin had to live with the horror that he thought of ruby as less of a person so he could excuse taking her free will I don't think its just a man thing I think its a pretty universal concept to want t change someone when you know you shouldn't

I thought he took her to his mom's to prevent her from getting a job and staying at her apartment? I think that shows how codependent he was by fearing her spending time away from him.

Yess, I feel like it shows even more so by him wanting her to be just for himself it seems he’s almost scared of her getting close with his family as if it would disconnect them. Through the whole movie he wants her out of his own selfish desire to “fix “ his life in a way

Before my pops got sick and ultimately met his demise at the hands of lung disease, both he and my mom told me to go forth and do whatever it is that I wanted to do before trying to settle down. I always just put that off to the side of my mind when told that but it wasn't till the point that when my old man was nearly out the door did I realize what he and my mother meant. There were times many times in his life that he wished that he didn't have to put up with his current situation, caring for people who don't deserve it, working at a place you loathe because you have a family. And many times I felt that sadness and hatred as I was his son and at times he was abusive physically and emotionally, this doesn't excuse the fact that you shouldn't be doing this to children but it allowed me to come to terms and forgive him. Because unfortunately, he was a unhappy person, he never got to do what he wanted and always had to do the self sacrifice because that is what was required of him as a father. So that brings me to your point that "unfulfilled lives, lead to unhealthy relationships." So right now I do have a pain in my heart and want so much to love another but I know that for my relationship to be healthy and fulfilled I shouldn't try and put the unnecessary expectation for my significant other to fill.

I'm so grateful to this movie for existing. It's such an important story with a great moral lesson and I feel like other screenwriters could learn from it when tackling the romantic comedy format. Great analysis- I particularly enjoy your thoughts on the ending, because I agree, there's not really any indication that Calvin learned from his experience and if he and Ruby start over in their relationship, who knows if it'll turn out any better. I was a little disappointed with the ending for that, tbh.

I saw their last piece of dialogue as an indicador that he has learnt something from it and that he is ready to give more freedom. Few people would like an ending that was the opposite of this, right?

Loved every bit of this analysis on the take on Love. I love these kinds of movies. Another favourite is the Movie "her". I love how they both explore Love in a Utopic world, one that's created by the protagonist as a way to avoid dealing with real life challenges and exploring relationships with the emotional legwork they deserve. Because there is no perfect anything in the world.

This is a pretty interesting view of the film, but I believe that everything that happens during the film is Calvin telling us about his novel. And in the last scene when he meets Ruby(actually she's not Ruby) Calvin like makes us understand what about was his novel. He saw a beautiful girl(maybe in the coffee house) during one of the hardest periods of his life, he loved that girl and used the excitement to write a novel(the one he was telling us during the film), and during the last scene, he meets that girl actually and promises us not to tell what happens at the end)

I've seen this movie before. It's been done several times already. ----------- Guy dreams up a dream girl. Dream girl comes into being in some fashion or another (either as a highly advanced android or as an angel or as a literal dream girl breaking into reality itself). Guy loses the girl because there's sumpin' wrong wit him. Either because he's a jerk or he's just plain stupid or a combination of both, he loses her in any case. Guy learns his lesson and tries again with another girl. Or he ends up alone (if not worse off than he was before). ------------ The only thing which is subversive about this one is the fact that the guy lets the girl go himself and, the new girl he pursues in the end is actually the same girl, albeit with a new personality which may or may not be compatible with his own. --------- When are we ever going to see a film where the guy ends up with the dream girl and things work out between them?
