Cornbread Ingredients:
All purpose flour: All purpose flour will allow the bread to rise a bit and give it the spongy, caky consistency of bread.
Yellow cornmeal: A must for cornbread! It give the bread its beautiful golden-brown color and the grainy, delicious consistency.
Granulated sugar: This gives the bread a touch of sweetness it needs to balance out the corn and bread flavors.
Salt: Just a pinch to bring out the complexity of flavors.
Baking powder: To help the dough rise and expand as it bakes.
Butter: This is a must - it gives the bread a moist, flaky, rich flavor that is heavenly.
Egg: This binds everything together and helps the bread to rise.
Milk: For a rich, moist cornbread!

Yup, I can begrudge him using the tools, but a fine steel-wool pad and a can of Easy-Off woulda done the same thing (done it a thousand times). Canola oil came out nice, but I prefer Crisco shortening for its smoke point. A cast iron manufacturer once recommended that to me, and it's slick as glass.

I always love sandblasting. The difference in before and after is instant and so huge!
@Reman1975
@Reman1975 2 жыл бұрын
Not always that instant. If you've got a small part with loose rust it can be a pretty quick process, but if you're doing something with a lot of surface area, like a set of motorbike engine castings or a couple of old steel wheels, the job REALLY drags on. :(

@@Reman1975 I think that's not the kind of "instant" the thread starter was referring to ;-) You point the sandblaster to a rusted piece and instantly the area hit by the blast changes from rusty to mint condition. It is like painting with the color of "new". Of course it takes a while until your entire motorbike engine is "painted" like that.

@@TysyTube When you turn on your oven, put in your pan. Let it heat as the oven heats. When the oven is ready, pull out the pan, add butter and then pour in the dough. As you add in the dough, it will bubble and squeal. After cooking, it will be crispier than if you'd put in the dough when the pan is cold.

Have to agree. Part of the point of using cast iron instead of a plain baking pan is it's heat retention. Also, you can use that to make AMAZING corn on the cobb. Leave the corn in it's husk- this SIGNIFICANTLY brings out the corn's natural sweetness. This can be done in a well ventilated kitchen, but it does get smoky toward the end so I advise using a grill outside. Cook 20 minutes inside husk, meanwhile pre heat cast iron pan in the oven to 375. You can let the corn cool enough to take husks off. Then drop a tablespoon of butter into each well of the skillet and set the corn in. Let cook 4-6 minutes, add an additional tablespoon of butter, flip, bake another 4-6 minutes. Enjoy.

As a chef I feel morally obligated to tell you that you could have salvaged the crushed eggshell mess by running it through a Chinoise (strainer), it would have also removed the chalazea (weird white protein fiber that connect the yolk to the wall of the shell, it breaks down as the egg ages, but can be an issue on fresh eggs) if you were feeling frisky about not wanting anything messing up smooth beaten eggs.
