Cornhole Rule Problem or Opportunity?!

The American Cornole League changed their tournament rules for the 2023/2024 season to include a new step rule. Or more specifically what you can do with your feet on the step follow through and where you must remain within the cornhole pitchers box. ‪@MikesBags‬ did a great video on the subject and I am going to react to it here with my take on the what acl was looking to accomplish with this cornhole league rule change. #cornhole

I’m a “by the book” kind of person when it comes to competitive events. The rule is the rule. I’m all for a hard stop- no crossing the foul line until the bag hits the board would be just fine with me. 1st infraction no points for that bag, 2nd infraction no points for that round, 3rd infraction DQ.

i just watched the acl open #2 live stream, and live chat was calling them out on it lol, and players were getting warnings even though the other player didn't mind, the refs were starting to call it. I guess one of the benefits (or drawbacks) of live streams, live chatters can pressure ACL to enforce rules.

Yes, I agree. It's a fantastic rule because it almost gives that other player. A more competitive advantage with the motion moving forward. So with that said, yes. I believe that we should be self-policing each other. Also as you stated I don't believe anybody has the guts to do that. On a national broadcast for the fear of upsetting everybody's apple cart and the repercussions because of it.

You bring up a good point, it is a mental game and doing that could cause a momentum shift. But who's gonna be the one bold enough to call that on national tv? I can also see this rule being abused by players to cause issues. I think the broadcast court should have an official to make those calls and not leave it to the players.

100% RAW. Rules are only as strong as their enforcement. If they're not being enforced - get the official and get it enforced. If your goal is to get in your opponents head...I mean, that's a little malicious but it's also competition so...whatever. The point is that the rule should be enforced - full stop. That rule is strictly enforced in our house games.

Those that step over are releasing the bag closer to the hole then those that do not step over. For a tall player, that could be as much as 2-2 1/2 difference or more.

In my opinion, players should feel welcome to start back as far as they need, in order to finish all steps before or at the line. Then it becomes just a matter of whether a player crosses the line or not. MUCH easier to officiate. Can someone tell me why they just can't start further back and all finish in the same place. At the line......?

too much grey area still so its hard to enforce. make the rule you can't step over the line like most other sports (bowling) then its cut and dry!!

My opinion is this sport is not a running sport like basketball, so I like the rule of the ACO. Don't cross the line until your bag hits the board being thrown to. After watching the ACO Worlds it was aggravating to watch the ACL Worlds and so many players jumping over the line on every throw. Time to clean up the game and inforce the rules. I know this is not a popular opinion in the ACL. It would be better for the game as more people start watching and playing cornhole as a sport.

Stepping over the line at any time during the throw should not be allowed.

I play blind draws regularly every week with Fisher Hamilton and he gives zero fucks about the rules it seems. I’ve seen him step 10-15 feet to the side and throw shots even after his foul was mentioned. Yes it’s a local event but that doesn’t mean you’re above the law.. I see in this video he breaks the line step rule repeatedly as well

Dumb rule! Like you said just like basketball if the bag is released before you cross the line it should be good! And everyone should have the option to do it! Just let them play

Why have a foul line at all if you are gonna allow a grey area around the line? Just a simple rule, can’t cross the line at any pint until the round is over.
