Travel info -
We went from Leighton Buzzard to St. Ives. Trip straight there takes around 5 hours 40 minutes, depending on traffic. We avoided motorways and went through country roads passing by Stonehenge (there is normally a lot of traffic during the day but we were there at around 5 in the morning ) down to Exeter and then went up towards Perranporth. On the way to St. Ives we stopped off at Portreath and Kynance Cove. The beach near Kynance Cove is definitely worth visiting on a sunny day if you want to catch some tan. It is clear blue water and white sand.
Camping
As the trip was planned quite last minute we did not have a lot of options for where to stay, although if you are ok with camping or staying in a caravan you can find super cheap places. We got a place for tent in Polmater Touring Park which is five star with swimming pool, tennis court, seaview and a lovely pub. Definitely recommend the place, it was up to all the expectations. Would call it more a family friendly place, lots of kids who had plenty activities there as well. Paid 120 pounds for three nights but was worth it. 30 minute walk to St. Ives town and if you are tired and do not want to walk back up the hill in the evening just call a taxi, they are around five pounds only. Also there is bus going every hour down to the town and back. For adults I think it was 1.50 one way.
Parking your car in St. Ives might be not the easiest thing. Got stuck in the way to the Island Car Park, plus it was full and a queue to get in. The driving in the town is challenging as the roads are tiny and people walking everywhere. The car park near Porthmeor Beach was taken both times we went there.
Ended up taking the very last spot in Park Avenue car park which was 6 pounds for the whole day.
Surfing
We had never surfed before and was not even planning to but decided to give it a go.
For two hours it was 14 pounds each to get a wetsuit and a softboard. You can also get lessons starting from 35 pounds, I think.
4 hours was 25 pounds per person, including also gloves (you will need them, our hands were smashed without them). Staff friendly and next to it was a nice cafe to warm up afterwards.
Any questions feel free to ask, we will be more than happy to help!
