Stan and Hilda were comedy gold - followed a few years later by Jack and Vera. The humour overall was legendary and IMHO is what made Corrie unmissable for so many years - and then, sadly, it all turned to sh** when the new breed of producers decided viewers needed to be "educated" instead of "entertained". I stumbled over these years of classic episodes when I was searching "British TV drama" on KZfaq and am loving/bingeing every minute. Thanks ProfessionalGun66. Much appreciated.

You hit the nail on the head. The modern corrie not only tries to educate it also indoctrinates.

There was already quite a lot of Feminist dogma creeping in though bought by women and men, without question. The casual misandry and generalisations of some of the women characters was crass. Think you know Feminism? Do check out Janice Fiamengo and Karen Straughan, who have the story from its beginnings.

I couldn’t agree more! Todays media feels obligated to educate… or re-educate us all! Old Corrie was great 👍

I was only about one year old whenever this was originally aired. I never watch Coronation Street much these days. I prefer the classic Coronation Street because there used to be so much fun and humour back in the day. I can’t help listening to some of these over and over again. Thank you for posting.

Such a shame Corrie went so far downhill in the 90s. These characters were so good, you almost felt that they were family. 27 million watched Hilda unwrap Stan's glasses after he died. How many actresses can boast the same in a soap

Imagine an American version of Corrie back in the day Derdrie - Lauren Bacall Ken - Cary Grant Elsie - Joan Crawford Rita - Bette Davis Bette - Mae West Mike - Frank Sinatra Audrey - Gloria Graham Hilda - Thelma Ritter Gale - Mia Farrow Emily - Olivia De Havalind Mavis - Butterfly McQueen Stan - Clarke Gable
@susi-emily

That would be perfect, although as I'm imagining a 1930s pre-code version of Corrie, I'd drop Mia Farrow as Gail and bring in Joan Blondell. I'd swap Mike from Sinatra to Humphrey Bogart, and Audrey from Gloria Graham to Tallulah Bankhead. Alf would be Spencer Tracy. I wonder who my favourite, William Powell, could play? Gloria Graham would make an excellent Audrey for the 1940s Film Noir version of Corrie, with Robert Mitchum as Mike Baldwin.

Poor Deirdre quits Alf's shop coz she'd being used as a dish rag and is run of her feet. Yes it was a terrible strain for her lifting a tin of beans every hour, weighing up cheese and bacon and all those other hardships endured by the shopkeeper. This is the same bollocks Rita and Mavis go on about when they say theirs a rush on, OR, the oldest one of all about being stuck at home, ALL DAY washing pots and pans, nappys and looking after the baby.

I know how good Corrie was in those days, because just like when I watch it now, I get really irritated by the likes of Audrey, Ivy and all the other irritating characters, Audrey manipulating gullible Alf, Ivy bossing everyone around, Eunice and Fred, and the rest of them and I wanted to see what happened next, but I haven't watched it for years now, got so bored with the characters and even more disillusioned by the stupid storylines. It's comical that Audrey acted "as common as muck" when her real life background was anything but.

Fred complains he’s skint and jobless, but he’s forever drinking in the Rover’s! Never see him looking for a job! And when Mavis offered , he turned her down! But then why would Mavis ask him to paint when the man she is seeing is a painter??!! 😂🤣
