I'm curious about Uncle Albert's exit from the show and why it wasn't a bigger storyline. I just looked it up - Uncle Albert died of a heart attack while visiting his daughter Beattie on 13th May 1984, mirroring the death of actor Jack Howarth 6 weeks earlier. I don't recall much fuss being made about Uncle Albert's death, which is surprising considering he was such a big character and an original cast member. Did the Street have a funeral for him?

@@williamf4544 Oh God a flamboyant funeral for Elsie would have been marvellous - and very well deserved. As the years rolled on after her departure, it became plainly obvious she was a Coronation Street icon. They could have cut vintage clips of her best Corrie scenes into it, and made it a proper tribute to pat Phoenix. It's a shame ITV wasn't more creative with it's biggest product, and didn't do any special episodes. I guess cast and crew were busy enough churning out 3 episodes a week but I do think it's a shame they didn't make a few special extended episodes like your idea. I know you were being tongue in cheek (I'm seen many of your posts, lol!) but it would have been brilliant!

@@josephbland3904 Very fair assessment! I didn't like the way he tried to bully Eddie, who had a heart of gold. When he gave him a black eye on the eve of his wedding it was sickening! I quite enjoyed his spats with Len Fairclough though - Gee was in love with Rita, and insanely jealous she'd married Len! Great episode when Len smacked Fred one over the bar of the Rovers, in retaliation for a scrap they'd had at a party the night before. Eunice was always way too classy for Fred - it was a very believable storyline though. She married him thinking he'd become a landlord with a pub of his own. My mum had a cafe in Birkenhead market. I worked there throughout the late seventies and all the eighties and can I say I was never assaulted, propositioned or groped the whole time I worked there. And I was pretty cute when I was young. The blokes in Elsie tanner’s cafe would have been chucked out at best or reported to the police at worst. That is NOT how working class blokes behaved. Rest in peace Johnny Briggs aka Mike Baldwin. - thanks for the laughs and the drama. Did you know, his presence in Corrie, made the show rightfully Number One again after Crossroads was beating them in the early 70's. BTW, I loved the Gordon Lewis character and I wished the Corrie writers got Bet to marry him, instead of Alec Gilroy.

@glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, Johnny Briggs was a fantastic actor who was a huge shot in the arm to Coronation Street, bringing Southern glamour and chutzpah to the cobbles for 30 years from 1976 - 2006. He was such a talent, he hit the ground running as Mike - the character was fully formed from his first appearance in 1976, and never wavered. A lesser actor would have given a cliched, Cockney wide boy performance. But Johnny brought depth and authenticity to Mike, and made him fascinating. He could be ruthless in his professional and personal dealings. But he also had a heart of gold - as we saw in his kindnesses to Hilda, for example. Who could forget that fabulous storyline when Hilda 'won' Mike in a competition and he was a true gent, taking her to a posh restaurant and treating her like a lady. Hilda asked him to show her a bit of style, and smiling proudly, he obliged and gave her the best date ever. I think every woman watching those scenes found her heart melting a little at Mike's kind heart!
@shylinh5939
@shylinh5939 3 жыл бұрын
@@glamdolly30 Yes, he really was a terrific actor and, as you say, brought so much more to the character. He could be ruthless but he was also vulnerable and he responded to the vulnerabilities in others sensitively a lot of the time. The date with Hilda is a good example of this, he gave her a glimpse of another kind of life but not in a way that made him the central character with the chance to be flash and show off. He stepped aside and let the focus be on Hilda and he listened to her. He showed the caring and supportive side of himself to Ivy several times when he drove her to the hospital to be with Burt after he'd been in an accident, and later when he went missing. He was different from the other characters in that he was a Londoner, he made far more money than they did, and he was the capitalist factory owner often at odds with his workforce. But he was simultaneously very connected to those around him, and not just in romantic terms. A great character played by a first-rate actor.

Gordon Lewis isn’t that bad-he pulls them up when they need it, then does stuff like buying them all cheesecake! Hilda’s right-he’s doing what any boss does. @glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 3 жыл бұрын
Don't be taken in - the cheesecake bribe is a classic 'divide and rule' tactic by unscrupulous bosses. He keeps Hilda sweet so she'll dig the dirt on the others and be his snoop - he used her in exactly the same way when he returned in 1984. I've seen a lot of manipulative managers in my working life, it's sadly an all too familiar feature of office politics! Gordon Lewis was a great baddie and brilliantly played by David Daker. I loved the scene in Annie's back room when she wiped the floor with him on her return from holiday. He made the mistake of patronising her, suggesting she was too old to run the pub - and she rightly let him have it, putting the final boot in by telling him she'd be giving a lousy report on him to the brewery, scuppering his ambition to get a pub of his own! Gordon Lewis returned twice after Annie's departure, in '84 and '85, chucking his weight around again and telling Bet her outfits were too revealing. In the end Billy Walker returned and gave him his marching orders. I always liked Billy Walker, I'm surprised he didn't stay on as Rovers landlord for longer, I'd have liked him to have some bigger storylines. Perhaps Kenneth Farrington didn't want to commit to the show long term, and preferred to be a floating character? Ironically, Bet Lynch turned out to be Gordon Lewis' nemesis. They both went for the landlord job at the Rovers and both impressed Sarah Ridley. But in the end she chose Bet because she felt the pub had enough disruption. Just as well, because he was loathed by both staff and customers! David Daker who played Gordon Lewis got a lot of TV work at this time - usually playing baddies! I remember him as the resident villain opposite Richard O' Sullivan in the popular ITV drama 'Dick Turpin', screened on Saturday nights. His other credits from that time include 'Minder', 'Porridge', 'Boon' and 'Only Fools and Horses'. He is still going strong @ 2021 aged 85!

8:25 Yet again Deirdre shuts Tracy-luv out of the room, for absolutely no good reason. No wonder Tracy grew up to be a murderer! She shut the door on her too, what a great mother - she's only a tot, she could drink bleach or fall down the stairs! Deirdre was always chucking that poor kid out on her own on some feeble pretext. When she got older it was always "Go and listen to your tapes". There was a period on the show when there was no Tracy - the little girl who played her - Holly Chamarette - couldn't act to save her life and was ditched by Bill Podmore. And he didn't bother to re-cast the role for around 2 years before Dawn Acton took over. During that time Tracy was permanently locked upstairs in her room, like some sort of captive! Child actors are a huge inconvenience to a soap - that's why they keep them to a minimum, and it's no doubt the real reason Ken sent his twins to be raised by their grandmother in Scotland! Nowadays no soap would get away with that storyline - a father who can't cope with his own children, so palms them off on his mother-in-law to raise, it's utterly outrageous!

Noticed it in the previous month so need to ask before I forget. Are those Lindt chocolate bars in the corner shop behind the till? I thought Lindt was pretty much a relatively new chocolate to the UK like in the last 15 years or so? Random question but bugging me. Also, Fred has been steadily getting on my nerves these last few months but all of a sudden I really can't stand the guy. I don't even know why but he just seems a right knob. 😂 Nev from Auf Wiedersehen Pet having a go at being a believable lout. Fail pal haha.
