Found this video looking for cleaning videos. 33 years and I never knew how damaging it was to close with cranking! Thank you!

Ridiculous. If it wasn't supposed to be closed by reeling, it wouldn't have that functionality. Just for fun I looked at a manual I have handy here for a Pflueger reel. It says "Start the retrieve by cranking the handle forward. The bail will automatically close and pick up the line."

buddy just brought this up to me today, 99% of the time it closes itself nicely without needing to "crank" and works fine years later.

Bend more bails by flipping them manually. Depends on the user and wont cause harm to the bearing cranking. If you ever serviced a reel, there are 2 main bail return methods...the built in ramp under the spool or the bail hammer tripping and hitting the reel to flip itself.

very cool deal man. it really extends the life of the reel if you close it GENTLY.

It sounds very reasonable if it is true. You made a HUGE claim. What evidence do you have to back up the "wear and tear" statement? What case study have you done with two identical reels with evidence of what you state?

I can tell from when I get clients that do not do this the damage over time it causes to my reels. That proof.

Really good video. Does it matter if I’ve cranked the bail only once or twice?

Very good I will try that my bail is closing before I want it to I will try to open my bail to the left next time out

Well doody doody dooo, I will try that though, my scenario is I am throwing lures out into the surf with weights for distance and i try to lock the line as soon as it hits the water to prevent tangling up the lure. i switch hands to reel, that extra step to flip the bail gets in the way,

I just bought a Shimano Ultegra 1000. The bail is stiff when I use the turn handle retrieve so I'm switching to closing the bail by hand however is it not true that some of the Shimano bails are hollow? That being said would it not be hard on the bail over time, pulling it closed?

I get it but.... it sounds like, at first you are saying don't close the bail too quickly and then contradict that with your later statements. Don't know if closing the bail with the crank actually does damage to the reel but makes sense that less damage by closing by hand.

I was just thinking why i dont just turn the handle to close it the other day it would seem like less work but know i see the down side ....great video

I agree with your premise. I actually find myself just pushing on the the spool to stop a bait so it lands perfect. Then I close the bail. I just bought 2 Kastking spinning reels and they operate smooth as silk on the retrieve. The only thing is that if I did want to crank to close the bale it's as if the components are to stiff to close the bale. Is this a need for lubricant or just because these are cheaper reels? Thanks. I plan on just proceeding with closing the bale manually. I just want to make sure these aren't defective.

When I open my bail it locks to the left instead of underneath my rod. Is there a way to adjust where my reel locks when I open the bail ?

Don't think cranking the handle to lock the bail will put enough wear and tear on the reel.

I get your point with the slamming the door example. However I grew up fishing in Florida and at one point had to fish for my dinner and have never heard of always closing the bail by hand. Could it be that the manufacturers don't supply that info just to make big $ on hoping folks will send their reels in for repair?

Hard to say, just keeps less wear and tear from happening.

I'm not really bald, but my hairline has receded some and hair gotten thinner overall. When I was younger, I used to not wear hats and rely on sunscreen, but as my hair thinned with age I found that my scalp was getting sunburned. The other benefit to wearing a hat is that you don't have to put sunscreen on your forehead. If you put sunscreen on your forehead, your sweat will carry it into your eyes, end it's extremely irritating to the eyes.

thats all good in all but u forgot something guy...the old reels back in the 70's and older u had to turn the handle to close them.my mitchel 308 from the 60 cant be closed by hand.yes ur right about the newer reels but reels have changed since the 70's.Now they have multi bearing in them and yes closing by hand is rite but older fishermen learned and taught there kids what they knew which is by turning the handle.which is the only way u can close the bail on a older reels.need to cover all the bases and let people know things have changed over the years..there way is rite for older equipment.

Yep, I learned on my dad's Mitchel, and this dog is set in his ways. Have a Penn 705 Greenie that's almost as old as I am and have zero problems with the bail. Just because they don't make reels worth a damn anymore doesn't mean we should change, instead demand better from the makers.

Caution- wearing visors as head protection can cause scalp cancer. My mother told me always cover myself when in the sun. It’s simple. I don’t understand why, when I’m out there with clients, they dress as though they’ve never heard that.
